Meta Muse Can Now Run Your Mac and Shop at Walmart, and Meta Takes a Cut of What It Buys

Mark Zuckerberg opened tonight's Meta Connect keynote with software you can't wear. Before any glasses or headsets, he and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang spent the first stretch of the show on Muse, the personal AI agent Meta launched on September 8. Muse can now operate any app on your Mac, it works with Box and GitHub, it can shop at Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora and a long list of other stores, it's getting its own email address, and you can rename it and change how it looks and sounds.
Zuckerberg also explained how Meta gets paid. Muse is free, with a large allowance of tokens, and over time Meta expects to make money by taking a small fee on the transactions Muse handles. Meta makes money on Muse when Muse spends your money.

Audacity 4.0 Looks Like a Different App, and Edits Like One Too

If you have ever cut a podcast in Audacity, you know the routine. You get a clean take, you go to slide one clip a half second to the left, and the app makes you work for it. Audacity 4.0 shipped on September 3, and it is the first version in years that seems interested in making that part easier.
This is the largest update since version 3.0 in 2021, and it changes both how Audacity looks and what it can do. It is still free, still open source, still maintained by Muse Group.

The Mac mini used to be the easy recommendation. Somebody asks what desktop to buy, you say Mac mini, they say how much, you say $599. Apple dropped a new one on Tuesday with no keynote and no fanfare, and the cheapest one now costs $899.
That's a $300 jump from where the M4 model launched in October 2024, in under two years. You get the same 16GB of memory and the same 256GB of storage you got at $599. What the extra money buys is speed.

Apple’s Magic Keyboards Finally Match the MacBook’s Keycaps

Look at the modifier keys on a MacBook and then at the ones on a desktop Magic Keyboard. The laptop shows symbols. The desktop keyboard spells out the words. Apple has been shipping that mismatch for years, and today it quietly fixed it.
All four Magic Keyboards now use MacBook-style keycaps with symbols instead of words. They went on sale immediately, alongside the new Mac mini and Mac Studio, and the prices did not move.

Apple Just Raised Trade-In Values, and It’s Taking Android Phones Now

Apple raising trade-in values is normally a footnote. Apple raising trade-in values roughly a month before its biggest launch of the year, with some devices jumping close to 30 percent, is a strategy.
The company updated its U.S. trade-in estimates today, lifting the numbers for most iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch models compared to the last revision in May. It also added several Android phones to the list for the first time.

Apple Posted Its Best June Quarter Ever. The Stock Fell 6% Anyway.

Apple just posted the best June quarter in its history. Record revenue, record iPhone sales, record Mac sales, records in every single geography it reports. The stock fell more than 6% in after-hours trading.
That gap is the whole story. The quarter Apple reported is already over, and it was excellent. The quarter Apple guided to is the one investors reacted to, and it comes with a warning that the company cannot build enough of what people want to buy, at margins that keep shrinking for reasons outside its control.

Apple Is Quietly Rebuilding Every Mac It Sells

Look at Apple's Mac lineup today, then picture the whole thing swapped out. That is roughly the plan. According to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is getting ready to refresh every single Mac it sells over the next two years, from the cheapest MacBook Air to the Mac Studio sitting under a video editor's desk. Not a spec bump here and a new color there. The entire family, top to bottom.
It is worth saying up front that this is a report, not an Apple announcement, so treat the dates and details as the best current read on Apple's plans rather than a promise. But the shape of it is easy to understand, and it tells you something about where Apple thinks the Mac is going. The short version: people are buying Macs again, a lot of them to run demanding AI work locally, and Apple wants a lineup that can meet that moment. Mac sales are reportedly on track to climb for a third year running.
