Meta Muse Can Now Run Your Mac and Shop at Walmart, and Meta Takes a Cut of What It Buys

Mark Zuckerberg opened tonight's Meta Connect keynote with software you can't wear. Before any glasses or headsets, he and Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang spent the first stretch of the show on Muse, the personal AI agent Meta launched on September 8. Muse can now operate any app on your Mac, it works with Box and GitHub, it can shop at Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora and a long list of other stores, it's getting its own email address, and you can rename it and change how it looks and sounds.

Zuckerberg also explained how Meta gets paid. Muse is free, with a large allowance of tokens, and over time Meta expects to make money by taking a small fee on the transactions Muse handles. Meta makes money on Muse when Muse spends your money.

Muse can now run your Mac

The Muse Mac app came out last week and already works across your files, notes, and apps. Tonight Meta added computer use, which means Muse can operate any app on your Mac and keep working after you walk away. Meta didn't say anything about Windows.

On the work side, Muse now connects to Box and GitHub, plus other platforms Meta didn't list in full onstage.

A much longer list of stores

Checkout runs through Shopify and Stripe, using Stripe's Link and Shopify's Shop Pay. Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke says his company is "partnering deeply with Muse to enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay on all Shopify stores." PayPal payments now work globally. Meta named Walmart, Best Buy, Sephora, Wayfair, Ulta, Gap, Dick's, and Fanatics among the retailers that work with Muse, "and others," and Instacart is in for groceries. Amazon, which blocked Muse from Amazon.com over agentic shopping, is the big absence.

Your Muse, your name for it

You can name your Muse and change both its look and its voice, including how fast it talks, its accent, and even a request to "sound like a cowboy." The default mascot is named Jolly. Wang's avatar is modeled after his dog, and Zuckerberg's is a toga-wearing Roman named Agrippa. On Meta's AI glasses, you address Muse by whatever name you gave it.

The model, the inbox, and a privacy promise

Muse runs on Muse Spark, a model Meta says is trained to be a personal agent. Zuckerberg said Muse runs on a new secure server environment that even Meta can't look at. Meta didn't explain how that environment works.

Muse is also getting its own email address, so it can handle correspondence without you connecting your personal inbox. TestingCatalog spotted code in the Mac app last week pointing to addresses ending in @muse.ai, but Meta didn't say onstage how the mailbox works or when it ships.

Wang made the case for why you'd bother. He said people are using Muse to save real money, including getting lower insurance rates and knocking someone's internet bill down by $85. ("It's a banger," he said.) He also teased a new Meta Superintelligence Labs model coming "soon," with no details.

Who benefits when Muse buys

Tonight Meta gave Muse the run of your Mac and said it expects to make its money from what Muse buys. Meta has guardrails. Muse asks for approval before it sends email or makes a purchase, and it keeps a log of every action. Meta didn't say how those approvals work when Muse is operating your Mac after you've walked away.

Last week's weak spot was on the Mac itself. Security researcher Patrick Wardle showed that a hidden setting in the Mac app let any local app steal the token that controls a Muse account, which was enough to send email and make purchases as the user. Meta patched it in about a day. A server Meta can't look at does nothing about a token lifted from your own computer, and an agent that can operate every app on that computer makes the token worth a lot more to whoever steals it next.

An $85 cut to an internet bill is real money, and a small fee on a Shopify order is a fair price for an errand you didn't have to run. Muse is supposed to ask before it buys anything. Given who gets paid when you tap yes, read the order before you do.
