Apple’s Magic Keyboards Finally Match the MacBook’s Keycaps

Look at the modifier keys on a MacBook and then at the ones on a desktop Magic Keyboard. The laptop shows symbols. The desktop keyboard spells out the words. Apple has been shipping that mismatch for years, and today it quietly fixed it.

All four Magic Keyboards now use MacBook-style keycaps with symbols instead of words. They went on sale immediately, alongside the new Mac mini and Mac Studio, and the prices did not move.

That's the whole update

Apple announced no other hardware or functionality changes. The keyboards still charge over USB-C, still connect over Bluetooth, still use rechargeable batteries, and still come in the same layouts and sizes as before. Same switches, same feel, new legends on the keycaps.

Whether that matters depends on how you work. If you move between a MacBook and a desktop keyboard all day, matching legends removes a small daily friction, especially when you're following a keyboard shortcut written in symbols. If you never look at your keys, this changes nothing for you.

The price is the actual news

On a morning when Apple's entry desktop went from $599 to $899 over the space of four months, a refreshed accessory holding its price is worth registering. Memory costs are what's driving hikes across the industry, and a keyboard barely uses any, so it escaped.

Existing Magic Keyboards keep working exactly as they did. There's no firmware update, no new feature to miss out on, and no reason to replace one you already own. This is for people buying a keyboard anyway, or the ones who have quietly wanted their desk to match their laptop for the past decade.
