A Retailer Says Sony Killed Its Last Cheap 4K Blu-ray Player. Sony’s Store Won’t Restock It.

A Sony 4K Blu-ray player

If you own a stack of 4K Blu-rays, the UBP-X700/K was the easy answer to "what player should I buy?" It was Sony's last budget option for 4K discs. Sony's Japan webstore now lists it as out of stock, with a note saying it will not be restocked.

That listing is the hardest piece of evidence anyone has. The discontinuation was first reported by Kunkoko, a Japanese retailer, and picked up by FlatPanelsHD. Sony hasn't said anything publicly. In the US the player is sold out at Walmart and Best Buy, though other Sony 4K models were still listed at Best Buy when the report ran.

What's actually left

The two machines people point to as alternatives aren't really alternatives. Panasonic's DMR-4X1010 is Japan-only. The Magnetar Ultima is $12,000. One you can't buy, the other you won't.

Your PS5 isn't the fix

You may already have a disc player under the TV. The PS5 spins Blu-rays and it isn't going anywhere. It also doesn't support Dolby Vision or Dolby Atmos for movies, which for a lot of disc buyers is the whole reason to own the disc instead of streaming the film. If you care about the format enough to buy physical copies, you care about the part the PS5 leaves out.

PlayStation has put a date on its own disc business too. The company plans to end game disc production in 2028. That covers games, not movies, so nothing on your shelf stops working. It's still hard to read as enthusiasm for the drive.

One model is not an exit

A single discontinued player, reported by a retailer, with no word from Sony, is not Sony walking away from 4K discs. Other Sony 4K models were still listed at Best Buy when the report ran. Sony could announce a replacement next month and nothing known today would contradict it.

What's changed is the cheap end. A budget player is what makes a disc collection a normal purchase rather than a hobby with a buy-in. Without one, 4K discs become a format you have to want on purpose.

So if you've been meaning to buy a UBP-X700/K, stop meaning to. Check what stock is left, grab the one you find, and don't wait for a sale that isn't coming.
