Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra Is Official and Starts at $2,599

Yesterday the Surface Laptop Ultra was a spec sheet Microsoft had confirmed nothing about. Today Microsoft put the machine on a stage in San Francisco and confirmed nearly all of it, along with the one number the leak never had. The entry configuration costs $2,599.

Microsoft calls this its first "builder class" PC, built for developers and AI researchers rather than for people who want a nice Windows laptop. At $2,599 to start, it sits well outside normal Surface territory. You do not buy this one because your old laptop got slow.

XREAL’s Aura Finally Has a Price. It’s $1,279, and You Can’t Buy One Yet.

XREAL has been taking deposits on the Aura without telling anyone what it would cost. Today the company filled in the blank. The Android XR glasses start at $1,279, and the larger configuration is $1,499.

If that sounds like phone money, it is. The catch is that you probably can't spend it yet. Preorders opened only to people who already put down a reservation deposit. Everybody else waits for what XREAL calls "the coming weeks," which is not a date.

Leaked Photos Show LG’s Apple Home Cameras. Code in iOS 27.2 Names Schneider Electric Too.

Two leakers moved the Apple and LG home story along today, and Apple had nothing to do with it. Mark Gurman reported yesterday that Apple co-developed a line of home accessories with LG that will ship under LG's name. Today an X account called @ringo_tech posted images of four of them, and the leaker pdfu found code in iOS 27.2 that labels two Schneider Electric products the same way Apple's code labels the LG gear.

The photos will get the attention. The Schneider line in the code is the part I keep rereading. "Second-party" is Apple's own label inside its HomeKit database, and right now only the LG accessories and those two Schneider products carry it. The label reportedly means those accessories get special treatment from the operating system, which would put them in a tier between Apple's own hardware and the HomeKit gear anyone can build.

Windows Search Is Becoming a Chatbot, a Year After Microsoft Promised Less Copilot

Type a file name into Windows search and you get web results. Type an app name and you wait. Microsoft knows, and the fix it showed today is to turn the Search Menu into something you talk to.

Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's executive vice president of Windows and Devices, demoed the rebuilt Search Menu on stage in San Francisco. It's a chatbot-style box that takes short typed commands and then does things: toggling settings, pulling up apps and files, or holding a conversation with the Copilot app without you opening Copilot at all. It arrives this fall.

GPT-6 Reaches Every ChatGPT Tier This Week. It Can Answer You With a Bill Splitter.

Ask ChatGPT to split a dinner bill four ways and you get a paragraph of arithmetic back. Starting this week it can hand you a bill splitter instead, a small tool with fields you type into, sitting inside the conversation.

That capability is called Intelligent UI, and OpenAI announced it on Wednesday alongside the rollout of GPT-6 to every ChatGPT tier. GPT-6 Sol starts reaching Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts on October 7 in the Chat tab, with GPT-6 Luna arriving for Free and Go users on the 8th. Paid customers got the first GPT-6 models last month. This is everyone else's turn.

Jaguar’s Type 01 Is Real. Nobody Agrees on What It Costs in the US.

Jaguar spent nearly two years as a car company you could argue about but not buy a car from. That ended at a world premiere in New York on October 7, where the Type 01 turned up as a finished production car with a factory, a build date, and prices in at least two currencies. It is a four-door electric grand tourer, and it is the first Jaguar you will be able to order since the company tore its own brand down and started again.

The hardware is serious. Three motors make a combined 758 kW and 1,365 Nm of torque, which other outlets have converted to roughly 1,015 hp, and the reported 0 to 62 mph time is about 3.2 seconds. Jaguar also built the car around its own 850-volt architecture, so it takes up to 350 kW on a DC charger. The company says that puts about 320 km of range back in 13 minutes. On a long drive, that is the difference between a coffee stop and a meal.

GameStop is selling used PS5 Pro consoles for $1,399.99. A new one has an MSRP of $899.99, which puts the secondhand unit $500 over the sealed one. Pre-owned special editions are listed at $1,499.99.

That gap would be easier to shrug off if you could buy the cheaper option. GameStop has no new Pros in stock online, so the used listing is the only PS5 Pro the retailer will actually sell you today. Nobody at the company has explained the math.

Apple’s Smart Home Push Reportedly Comes With LG’s Name on the Box

Apple's smart home plan is reportedly bigger than one hub, and a good chunk of it says LG on the box. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple worked with LG on a set of home accessories (a video doorbell, a deadbolt lock, a thermostat, indoor and outdoor cameras and a floodlight cam) that LG will sell under its own brand. The trail runs through LG's own regulatory paperwork, filed with the FCC and UL Solutions. Apple has confirmed none of it.

Seven accessories at once is a catalog. Apple spends years on one hub while a partner fills in the liability-heavy parts of a smart home: the thing bolted to your front door, the camera on your porch, the box wired into your furnace. If you have been waiting for Apple to care about your house beyond a speaker and a TV stick, this is roughly what that would look like.

Microsoft goes on stage tomorrow for a laptop whose spec sheet is already sitting on the internet. Most of it, anyway. The one number that decides whether any of it matters, the price, is still missing.

Windows Central's Zac Bowden has published what he describes as nearly all the remaining details on the Surface Laptop Ultra, sourced from people familiar with Microsoft's plans. Every figure below comes from that reporting, not from Microsoft. What Microsoft has actually confirmed is the event: October 7, in San Francisco, livestreamed, with Windows, Surface and Nvidia's RTX Spark on the agenda. It has not put its name to a single core count, memory tier or brightness number.

Microsoft has not announced an Xbox Elite Series 3. Its own Design Lab appears to have described one anyway, down to the thumbstick options.

A Reddit user says they got into the backend of Spectrum Customizer, the configuration system that powers Xbox Design Lab, and pulled out configuration records and 3D component models for a controller carried internally under the codename Edessa. Digital Foundry reported the find. The files are no longer reachable, and Microsoft has confirmed none of what follows.

AI Routed a 16-Year-Old Up Crown Mountain. He Ended Up on a Climb Called the Widowmaker.

A 16-year-old set off from Grouse Mountain at 8 a.m. on Saturday with a route up Crown Mountain that an AI tool had planned for him. The route was supposed to go up a gully. It put him into steep, technical rock-climbing terrain instead, and by mid-afternoon he was stopped at the base of a cliff with no way up and no safe way down. North Shore Rescue got the call just before 3:30 p.m.

The climbing route he had ended up on is called the Widowmaker. "It turns out that this hiker had somehow got far off the Crown hiking route (we are unclear exactly how/where) and became stranded on a climbing route known as the 'Widowmaker', at the base of its final headwall," the volunteer team said. Two rescue technicians were lowered from a helicopter, hoisted him into the aircraft, and flew him to a base near Cleveland Dam. The operation finished shortly before 6:30 p.m.

A cheap subscription does not fix it either. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, picks up Flash and still does not get Pro. The only way to keep Pro is Google AI Pro at $19.99.

Lucid Delivered 3,806 Cars Last Quarter. It Only Built 2,954.

Lucid delivered more cars than it built last quarter. That is a first in the company's history, and it was the plan.

Lucid's own release puts it at 3,806 vehicles delivered in the third quarter of 2026 and 2,954 built. Deliveries are down about 7% from the 4,078 Lucid handed over a year earlier, and they came in below analyst delivery estimates. Production dropped 38% from the 4,774 cars Lucid built in the second quarter, the company's lowest quarterly output since early 2025.

Nintendo put out two new Switch releases this week that cost nothing, run with the Wi-Fi off, and are built for someone who cannot read the title screen. Hello, Peach! and Hello, Luigi! are on the eShop now, free on Switch and Switch 2, and here is the complete list of things to do in them: poke a cartoon face, stretch it, spin it, and play peekaboo.

There is no score, no levels and nothing to unlock, and both run single player in handheld mode only. Nintendo's store pages file them under the genres "Action" and "Simulation," which is funny until you picture a toddler dragging Luigi's nose across the screen and decide the tag is doing its best.

An American factory built to make batteries for electric cars is about to start making them for military drones instead. Amprius Technologies landed a grant of up to $75 million from the US Department of War to do it. Only about $22 million of that has actually been obligated.

Amprius makes silicon anode lithium-ion cells, the kind pitched for years at EVs and electric aviation because they pack more energy into less weight. On September 28 the company said it will retrofit an existing US production line, currently run by what it calls a major South Korean manufacturer, to build 12 million of its cells a year for small and midsize drones. The target is early 2028.

The bar is every original achievement in a game. Clear them all and the game goes Mythic. Achievements added later by DLC or a title update don't count against you, and they can't take it back. "It's yours to keep," senior product manager Alex Charters said.

M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review: Huge Local AI Performance (for a Price!)

The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is the fastest computer Apple has ever sold, and after a couple of weeks with one on my desk, I can tell you immediately that it's shockingly good.

Apple sent me a near-top configuration: 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, 256GB of unified memory, and an 8TB SSD. That's more computer than I've ever had in a box this size, and the numbers land about where Apple said they would back in August: 30% to 45% more CPU than the M3 Ultra depending on the benchmark, anywhere from 20% to 60% on the GPU depending on the test, and storage that runs two to three times as fast. The bigger change is who this machine is for. It used to be the video editor's Mac. Now it's the Mac for anyone who wants to run a 150GB language model on their desk without paying anyone a monthly fee, and Apple has priced it for exactly that person.

Bloomberg: Apple Postponed Its Camera Pendant, and Is Prototyping a Screenless Fitness Band

An always-on camera hanging from your neck is a lot to ask of a person. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple has landed in roughly the same place, at least for now. Gurman says the company has postponed its AI pendant, the small camera-and-microphone wearable that was meant to feed Siri a live look at whatever is in front of you.

Gurman has described it as something you could hang around your neck, clip to your clothes, or wear on your body, with the camera doing the job your phone camera does now when you point it at a menu and ask what to order. Prototype descriptions in the reporting put it near the size of an AirTag, a thin disc of aluminum and glass with a button on the side. Apple has never announced it, never named it, and has said nothing about any of this.

Take the electronic viewfinder off a full-frame camera and Nikon will sell it to you for about $300 less. That is the Z5IIC, announced today, a Z5 II with the eyepiece deleted and a $1,399.95 price on the body. Whether that reads as a bargain or a dealbreaker depends almost entirely on what you shoot.

If your footage ends up on YouTube, you already know your answer. Nobody presses a mirrorless camera to their face to film a talking head. The flip-out screen is the whole workflow, and the EVF was a lump on top that you paid for and carried around anyway. If you shoot stills outdoors, the answer runs the other way. No rear LCD beats an eyecup at two in the afternoon in July, and no brightness setting fixes the part where your arms are stuck out in front of you instead of braced against your face.

Oracle Says Its New Mexico Stargate Site Is On Schedule. It Filed to Delay the Rent Anyway.

Oracle says Project Jupiter, its 2.45-gigawatt AI data center in southern New Mexico, remains on schedule. It has also sent its landlord a force majeure notice, which is the paperwork you file when you think you might not be able to hold up your end.

The notice went to Stack Infrastructure, a Blue Owl Capital unit developing the campus in Doña Ana County. Oracle is the tenant, and per Bloomberg's reporting it cannot walk away from the lease and is not trying to. What the notice does is preserve an argument. If the site misses its 2028 target because the power did not show up, Oracle wants the right to push back when the rent clock starts.

Google’s Pixel Watch Can Now Estimate Your Blood Pressure

Google's Health Guardian tools start rolling out to the Google Health app this week, which means your Pixel Watch is about to start estimating your blood pressure. It reads your pulse and your motion all month, with no cuff and no calibration, and then tells you whether your numbers have been drifting higher. The first reports land in early October.

That word "estimating" is carrying a lot of weight. Blood pressure trends, insulin resistance trends and sleep breathing quality are all free on the Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5. Google's own fine print calls all three general wellness features, says they cannot diagnose anything, and says they are not a replacement for the cuff in your bathroom drawer.

The iPad mini has the smallest and most stubborn fan base Apple has. It is the tablet people read on in bed, wedge into a jacket pocket, and keep for five or six years because nothing else is quite that size. It also goes the longest between updates, which means every mini rumor gets picked over harder than it deserves.

This round is the biggest in years. Reporting from Bloomberg, plus a scatter of supply chain leaks, points to a new iPad mini as early as October with an OLED screen, a much faster chip, and a sealed body that survives a splash. Apple has announced nothing, and these claims are nowhere near equally solid, so here they are sorted by how much weight the sourcing carries.

Nissan’s Pixo Is a 161-Mile Electric City Car. It Is Not Coming to the US.

Nissan revived the Pixo name on September 23, and you cannot buy one. The Pixo is a European car. It is built in Slovenia, it is sold in Europe, and it is not scheduled for the United States at all.

What Europe gets is a small electric hatchback with a 27.5 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and 259 km of WLTP range, which is 161 miles. Nissan says customer deliveries begin in early 2027. It has not said what the car costs. Market pricing arrives from December 2026 onward, and the under-20,000-euro figure being quoted today (roughly $23,000 before incentives) is an expectation, not a number Nissan has announced.

Your refrigerator does not have a reboot ritual. You don't sit down with a coffee and watch a progress bar crawl across the door panel. It runs for a decade, and the only time you think about it is when the ice maker jams. On the afternoon of September 22, a batch of Samsung owners in South Korea found out that deal had quietly changed.

Samsung has confirmed that a test version of a refrigerator software update went out through SmartThings by mistake instead of the finished release. Units froze partway through. The panel sat on an update message and then went dark. Interior lights stayed off, the door's auto-open feature stopped responding, the SmartThings app listed the fridge as offline, and unplugging it and plugging it back in did nothing. What it stopped doing, above all, was refrigerate.

Alibaba Says the Zhenwu V900 Is China’s Most Powerful AI Chip. It Won’t Say How Fast.

Alibaba's chip unit spent part of its Apsara Conference keynote in Hangzhou this week calling the Zhenwu V900 the most powerful AI chip in China. Then it declined to say how fast it is. No FLOPS figure, no process node, no foundry, no power number. What you get instead is 216GB of memory, 1,200GB/s of inter-chip bandwidth, and native support for FP8 and FP4.

Those are real specs on a real chip, and T-Head has shipped enough silicon that its existing Zhenwu parts serve more than 650 customers, so none of this is vapor. But the line everybody repeated afterward, Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu's claim that the V900 delivers "three times the performance of its predecessor, the Zhenwu M890," is a vendor number with nothing underneath it yet. The M890 had 144GB and 800GB/s. Do the division and both of those are exactly 1.5x. Tripling performance off 1.5x on memory and 1.5x on bandwidth means the compute engine has to be doing a great deal more work per clock, and that is the part Alibaba described with an adjective instead of a number.

Games go free-to-play. That is the direction the traffic moves, and it has been for a decade. On Wednesday, id Software and Bethesda drove the other way. They took a nine-year-old free-to-play arena shooter, pulled the monetization out of it, and put a $9.99 price tag on the Steam page.

The 1.31 point release notes do not bury it. "Today's update marks a new chapter for Quake Champions as we transition the game from a free-to-play service to a paid application on Steam," id wrote. "Battle Passes and microtransactions have been removed. Quake Champions is now available for one low price on Steam." One sentence later, id adds that "No additional content updates are planned at this time."

Meta’s Muse Charm Puts Your AI Agent on a Keychain by December

Meta saved its oddest piece of hardware for the last two minutes. At the end of tonight's Connect keynote, Mark Zuckerberg did a "one more thing" and held up a small black puck on a cord. It's called Muse Charm, Engadget's Karissa Bell put it at about the size of an Apple Watch, and its job is to give your Muse agent a body you can carry around. Zuckerberg said the design isn't finalized, but Meta plans to ship it "in time for the holidays," in December.

The Charm has a screen, and your Muse avatar lives on it. In Zuckerberg's case that's Agrippa, the toga-wearing Roman he'd been talking to all night. Tom's Guide's live notes say Meta has "only built a few of these so far," that you tap a fingerprint sensor in the corner, and that the "entire Muse AI" is built in. Engadget's Cherlynn Low said it "feels like a Tamagotchi met an AI wearable," and the stage shots back her up.

Your YouTube homepage is a guess. Most days it's a good one, built out of everything you've watched, skipped, and let autoplay through at one in the morning. It is still YouTube deciding what you're in the mood for, though, and soon you'll be able to tell it directly instead.

That's the headline feature in a batch YouTube announced today. Custom feeds let you describe what you want in a conversational prompt, and YouTube builds a tab for it. The examples run to a feed for workouts, one for long documentaries, and one that surfaces new creators in a niche you care about. It's coming to web, mobile and TV, in the US first, and the only timing attached to it was "soon."
