A Used PS5 Pro at GameStop Costs $500 More Than a New One. GameStop Hasn’t Said Why.

GameStop is selling used PS5 Pro consoles for $1,399.99. A new one has an MSRP of $899.99, which puts the secondhand unit $500 over the sealed one. Pre-owned special editions are listed at $1,499.99.
That gap would be easier to shrug off if you could buy the cheaper option. GameStop has no new Pros in stock online, so the used listing is the only PS5 Pro the retailer will actually sell you today. Nobody at the company has explained the math.
How the price got here
The Pro launched at $699.99 in November 2024, went to $749.99 in August 2025, and went to $899.99 this past April. Tom's Hardware attributes both increases to chip shortages. The used price at GameStop moved too, from $807.49 in April according to BGR (Tom's Hardware cites a prior used price of $800) to $1,399.99 now. That is roughly a 73 percent jump on the secondhand console in about six months, while the new price stayed put.
The listings themselves are a little muddled. GameStop puts the second tier at $1,499.99 under a special edition label, while BGR reads the two tiers as the digital edition at $1,399.99 and the disc model at $1,499.99. Both sit above $899.99 either way.
The leaked email has not been confirmed
This surfaced on Reddit on Tuesday, October 6, when an anonymous user who says they work at GameStop posted what they described as an internal email announcing the change. An r/GameStop moderator said the poster had been vetted. The email, as posted, said "the pre-owned consoles will have a higher price than the new console [and] this is intentional," and gave no reason for it.
Nobody outside that thread has authenticated the document, and GameStop has issued no statement about it. What moved this past rumor is simpler. The prices on GameStop's public listings now match what the leak said they would, which is something you can go check yourself.
What everyone else is charging
GameStop is not the only retailer out of stock. Sony and Target also list the new Pro at $899.99 and also have none to sell. Best Buy has listed it at $1,496.01. Walmart has listed it at $1,554.99. Sealed units on eBay and Facebook Marketplace are going for around $1,300 and up.
Lined up against that, $1,399.99 reads like a price set by watching the rest of the market. It is still a used console.
The GTA 6 theory
Every outlet covering this has reached for the same explanation. That explanation is an inference, and nothing in the leaked email supports it. GTA 6 is due November 19, 2026, and PlayStation and Rockstar have partnered on a marketing campaign tied to the launch. A senior games buyer at an unnamed retailer told The Game Business this summer that component shortages and price increases have kept consoles in shorter supply, and that "Demand will likely outstrip supply during the year end period." Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball said in June, "I can tell you definitively demand for our console exceeds the supply."
Put that together and you get a console shortage heading into a holiday quarter the trade expects to be tight, at a retailer that has decided its used stock should cost more than its new stock. Scarcity pricing, inventory management, or charging what a cornered buyer will pay are all consistent with what anyone outside the company can see. Only GameStop knows which one it is, and GameStop isn't saying.
Should you buy one at $1,399.99?
No. A used Pro at that price is worse value than a sealed one at $1,300 from a stranger, and much worse value than waiting. The $899.99 price has not moved since April, and Sony, Target and GameStop are all still listing the console at it, which means they all plan to sell it at that price once they have units. Restocks happen.
If you need a Pro in hand before GTA 6 and you're willing to overpay, the sealed market is currently cheaper than GameStop's used shelf. Either way, check the new listing first. It is $500 less, and it does come back.
