Bloomberg: Apple Postponed Its Camera Pendant, and Is Prototyping a Screenless Fitness Band

An always-on camera hanging from your neck is a lot to ask of a person. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple has landed in roughly the same place, at least for now. Gurman says the company has postponed its AI pendant, the small camera-and-microphone wearable that was meant to feed Siri a live look at whatever is in front of you.

Gurman has described it as something you could hang around your neck, clip to your clothes, or wear on your body, with the camera doing the job your phone camera does now when you point it at a menu and ask what to order. Prototype descriptions in the reporting put it near the size of an AirTag, a thin disc of aluminum and glass with a button on the side. Apple has never announced it, never named it, and has said nothing about any of this.

Where the work is going instead

Per Gurman, the effort is moving toward wearables Apple is further along on, including more AI in the Apple Watch, AirPods with cameras, and smart glasses targeted at 2027.

Those three share something the pendant never had, which is a reason to already be on your body. AirPods are in your ears because you want music. A watch is on your wrist because you want a watch. Glasses go where eyes go. A camera disc on your chest is something you put on for one purpose, and everyone around you can see that you did.

The screenless one

The other half of Gurman's reporting is about a device with no camera at all. He describes Apple exploring a screenless health wearable, a thin fabric band with a sensor-equipped computing module and no display, pitched at the territory WHOOP and Oura have been working for years.

It is early. Gurman puts the project in a technology investigation phase, with prototypes in progress and no decision to ship, and says Eddy Cue and Tim Cook are behind it. Cue took over Apple's health team in October 2025, and per the reporting he has pushed that team to study what the simpler fitness-first rivals do well.

A wearable that isn't looking at you

Every AI gadget of the last few years has asked the same favor. Let a camera live on you and point at your life, and in exchange you get an assistant that can see. It is a big ask, and it has not gotten any easier to make.

A band with no screen and no camera asks for almost nothing. It reads your heart rate and your sleep, it sends numbers to your phone, and it does not look at anyone, buzz at you, or announce itself to the room. Plenty of people want the health data and want no part of a gadget that stares. WHOOP built a business on that person.

What is actually known

This is Gurman's reporting, not an Apple announcement. Apple has not confirmed the pendant, the postponement, or the band. There is no name, no price, and no ship date for either device, because neither has been announced. Postponed is also not cancelled, and Gurman is clear that the band may never ship either.

Of the two ideas, the band is the easier one to convince a person to put on, and it is the one Apple is still prototyping.
