Posted by Sparky Categories: CES, CES 2008, Misc. Tech, PC / Laptop, Peripherals, Storage,

Samsung has unveiled their new 128GB SSD (Solid State Disk) here at CES 2008. The new 1.8” drive connects to laptops via the SATA3 standard, and features a 70MB/sec write speed. These newly bumped up write speeds combined with the durability and low power consumption of SSD disks should mean a whole new crop of hard drive free laptops springing up in 2008 with stunning battery life and nearly instant-on performance.

CES 2008: Pioneer Kuro HDTV Concept: 50-inch, 9mm Thin Plasma
Posted by Chris Cardinal Categories: CES, CES 2008, HDTV,
Billed as being “thinner than last month’s Wired magazine” and similarly thinner than an iPhone, Pioneer unveiled their Kuro HDTV concept model at their press conference today. The 50-inch plasma weighs in at a relatively paltry 41 lbs and just 9 mm thick. They also claim they’ve “made contrast ratios irrelevant” by eliminating ALL idling luminance, producing completely true blacks. We’ll see how it looks later this week, as they’ll have their concept on the show floor but the early photos they have are impressive to say the least.
Since these are merely concepts, they won’t be available for another year or so but it clearly shows the direction Pioneer is going with their form factors and by “obsoleting” contrast ratios.
Look forward to some video coverage on the floor unit once the show opens up.

CES 2008: Warner Drops HD-DVD, Lone Tear Streams Down Toshiba’s Face
Posted by Chris Cardinal Categories: CES, CES 2008, Home Entertainment,
Warner Bros. announced they were becoming an exclusively Blu-Ray studio this weekend, apparently completely pulling the rug on the HD-DVD camp. Said a Toshiba press release:
TOKYO, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/—Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.’ decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.
We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.
Toshiba‘s one of the HD-DVD founders and following this announcement, they pulled their CES conference entirely. A bit of a death knell ringing for the HD-DVD side, with rumors swirling that Microsoft may be pulling their HD-DVD support as well.
It makes the free HD-DVD press backpack/roller bags a bit of a sad affair.

Samsung to Unveil Larger AMOLED Display
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: CES, Corporate News, Design, HDTV, Home Entertainment,

Samsung has developed a 31-inch AMOLED (active-matrix organic light emitting diode) screen, their largest thus far. When electricity is applied to organic materials, it creates clearer and brighter images than in LCDs and PDPs. Although the company has been playing around with the technology for a while now and released a smaller version in October 2006, they will probably be showing of their new offspring at this month’s CES. We expect Samsung not to be the last company to explore the possibilities.

Panasonic is planning to unveil a 150-inch Plasma screen TV. At 2 x 3.5 meters, it is 47-inches bigger than its former large screen panel. Developed by Matsushita, it is big enough to display a full-size human. Available by 2009, it is set to debut as the world’s largest TV at next month’s CES. Sharp currently holds the record with a 108-inch LCD TV but we are guessing that Panasonic just had to have the last word
