‘Pushing Daisies’ Helps ABC Wednesday

Wednesday’s premiere of Pushing Daisies attracted many customers to The Pie Hole.  By night’s end, ABC came out with another win (followed by CBS, NBC, FOX and CW).

  • CBS’ (14.4 million, 3.7/9) took the hour in viewers, but placed 3rd in the demos.
  • (12.3 million, 4.5/11) declined from last week, but still topped that new show on NBC.
  • (10.9 million, 4.0/10) dropped 30% in the demos and lost 19% of its viewers.
  • CW’s (2.8 million, 1.3/3) remained fairly even.

10pm

  • (12.7 million, 3.9/10) maintained last week’s viewership numbers.
  • ABC’s (9.7 million, 3.6/10) lost almost 700,000 viewers but moved up to second place.
  • NBC’s (8.8 million, 3.0/8) lost 13% of its audience causing it to fall into 3rd place.

Gear Live Gives Back Education Charity Drive

Alright, let’s take a break for just a moment away from the standard news fare.

Gear Live has joined the 2007 DonorsChoose Blogger Challenge, and we have chosen ten great causes that are centered around getting some basic technology into classrooms located in our local area, as well as some of the hardest areas still suffering the affects of Hurricane Katrina. We’ve chosen ten causes that we thought touched on what we believed in, and you can take a look at them and choose which one(s) you want to help. Our goal is to raise $10,000 for the children of our nation. Just know that the money you donate will go directly to that specific teacher request - not into some big pot of money that is then doled out by the organization. As donations come in, there meter over on the right will fill up.

Some of the most expensive purchases for schools are consumer electronics. We believe that all children need to get acquainted with the tools of the future as they learn so they when they are ready to hit the workforce, they can succeed alongside their peers. Please, help us in assisting teachers, children, and schools in low-income areas get the tools they need to help their children excel.

‘Hannah Montana’ Tour Outselling The Police, Springsteen

Hannah MontanaIt’s not uncommon for a movie to outperform its competition—so should we be surprised that the hottest concert tour this year is being headlined by a Disney Channel star?

The (a.k.a. ) tour is so successful, scalpers are already selling her concert tickets at five times the face value.  Seats for all 54 stops have already sold out—and in several cases, in near record fashion.  (It took only four minutes in the Atlanta-area and eight minutes in Memphis.)  According the Associated Press, her tour is outselling The Police, Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.

Okay, the Spice Girls did just sell out their London concert in only 38 seconds—but let’s remember:  Hannah/Miley’s only 14.

Britney Loses Custody

Britney Spears While details are still developing, People magazine (and loads of other news sites and blogs) are reporting that is temporarily losing custody of her two children, Sean Preston and Jayden James. will have custody of the children, beginning Wednesday, “until further notice of the court,” according to the judge at today’s hearing. The specifics have not been made public, but the odds of Brit having custody have become increasingly stacked against her after recent events, including charges against her for a hit-and-run accident, driving without a valid license, and of course… interviews from her former bodyguard that claim the poptart endangered her kids and used drugs. You also may recall that Britney is supposed to have random drug testing twice a week. No word yet on whether this recent custody decision is the result of any testing. There will be another hearing on Wednesday.

Nickelodeon Gets Kids Off the Couch

Nickelodeon SplatBefore I get into this post, let me first say that I’m absolutely giddy (yes, I said giddy) because I just finished watching My Name is Earl and The Office. How great is it that the fall season has started? Pretty darn fantastic… and I also can’t wait to watch the Ugly Betty premiere that I recorded on the DVR. Of course, it’s late and I won’t be able to get to that until tomorrow. But anyway… kids’ network Nickelodeon is doing their annual bit to get kids away from the TV by offering three hours of dead air on the channel this Saturday. From noon to three, kids are supposed to use the time to get out and play, rather than watching the tube. I think this is an admirable effort, but really… if there’s nothing on Nick, don’t they have a sea of other channels to choose from? Just being a naysayer, I suppose. Then again, I limit the amount of television my kids watch and they’d much rather play outside than watch the TV. Video games, however, that’s another story. I’ve had to literally implement a timer system or else they never want to stop playing!  So, folks, take Nickelodeon’s lead and get your kids off the couch and active!


A Look at Kid Nation’s National Premiere

CBS LogoAfter all the controversy and news articles, premiered Wednesday night on CBS. Forty children between the ages of 8 and 15 were put in a New Mexico ghost town for forty days, and thus the news stories began. After rumors of lawsuits and complaints from parents, CBS kept Kid Nation under wraps for the early fall premiere. The network didn’t even send out media copies of the first episode, which featured the first four days’ of life in Kid Nation. But is Kid Nation really reality? Adult host Jonathon Karsh is onscreen a great deal of the time, and the kids obviously got a lot of suggestions from show insiders. Arranged into classes, the kids performed stunts to win privileges and prizes, and made a surprisingly smart decision when faced with having either a TV or seven new outhouses. Despite the young breakout stars of the series, the bottom line still remains: it’s TV, and beyond that it’s reality TV. There’s a whole lot of adult supervision and suggestion going on behind the scenes, no matter what CBS editing would have us believe.

Parents Question Kid Nation

CBS eyeThe CBS PR machine has been in full effect touting a new network reality show set to debut this fall. Promos have been running, hype has been huge, and now the media is giving CBS exactly what they want. Suddenly, Kid Nation is becoming a must-see, as the magic word gets used more and more: controversy. CBS took forty kids between the ages of eight and fifteen and put them in front of cameras. These kids were placed in the New Mexico desert without their parents for forty days, to see what kids can accomplish when left alone. While for some, this sounds more like the plot of a horror movie, this is actually a highly-touted reality program from the network known for dramatic unscripted programming. But now, questions have been raised. Did CBS violate child labor laws? Did the TV channel put children at risk?

Who’s Ready for High School Musical 2?

High School Musical Seriously, who isn’t ready for High School Musical 2? I’m a little older than the typical screaming pre-teen Zac Efron fan, but I have to admit I find a little twinkle of charm in the first High School Musical—so I’ll likely give the sequel a look this Friday. Hey, what else is there to watch on a Friday night? Summer TV is pitiful and the wait for the fall season is never-ending. So seeing something light and easy like High School Musical 2 should fit the bill nicely. And I owe it all to my niece. My own kids aren’t that interested, but my niece is a full-fledged maniac about the Disney movie. The movie is the follow-up, of course, to the original 2006 story of high school woes set to music. And it took off like wildfire—spinning into a myriad of plays, a tour, album—good god, even an ice show! This time around, the gang is working at a country club (yep, all of them), so you can bet there will be plenty of musical outbursts as they plan a talent show. And with the certainty of success for the latest High School Musical, there are talks of a third installment landing on the big screen.

Foxworthy Back for Another FOX Season

Jeff FoxworthyJeff Foxworthy, famously rednecked comedian, will return to FOX for new episodes of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader beginning August 30. Though some of the first-season kids were actors, including Back to You’s Laura Marano, Foxworthy says none of the kids were coached for questions. For the upcoming second season, all the kids will be non-actors. On the show, each question comes directly from a school textbook, though the new season will feature A Classroom Club question that lets every day kids submit their own quiz items. When a child’s question is used, the show will donate a computer lab to the kid’s school.
