Barbara Walters and Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton surprised Barbara Walters on her final episode of The View.

The veteran American broadcaster will retire today at the age of 84 and she was joined by a host of A-list stars, including Michael Douglas, who helped bid farewell to the star at the taping of her last episode yesterday. Barbara struggled to hold back the tears as Oprah, 55, brought out 25 female news anchors - including Katie Couric and Diane Sawyer - who have all been inspired by her six-decade career.

Neil Patrick HarrisNeil Patrick Harris was asked to present The Late Show.

The How I Met Your Mother actor - who raises twins Harper and Gideon, three, with partner David Burtka - was asked to replace David Letterman on the nightly talk show and even got as far as meeting with CBS executives to discuss the opportunity.

"They called me in and sat me down and asked if that would be something that I would be interested in doing," he said. However, despite the lucrative offer, the 40-year-old actor turned down the job as he worried about getting "bored" and wanted more flexible working.

"In that instance I felt like I knew what my skill sets were. I was surprised that he pitched me that idea, and I sort of sat for a minute with it and told him the things that concerned me about the longevity of that kind of gig. I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure is so set that I don't have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, musical act, good night," he said on The Howard Stern Show.

Chelsea HandlerChelsea Handler has been in talks to host a daytime show.

The 39-year-old presenter - who is to leave E! when her Chelsea Lately contract ends - had sparked speculation she was to replace Craig Ferguson on The Late Show on CBS after posting an Instagram picture of her holding papers branded by the network, but insiders insist she won't be taking on the 12:30 am slot.

"There are no discussions with Chelsea Handler regarding the network's 12:30 late night broadcast," an official statement from CBS read.

Instead, sources told the New York Post newspaper that she met with executives to discuss the possibility of a syndicated daytime talk show, following in the footsteps of the likes of Kris Jenner, Katie Couric and Anderson Cooper. However, it seems the outspoken star could have jeopardized the plan with her social media posting. "Chelsea Handler is a pain in the butt," an executive told the newspaper.

Stephen ColbertStephen Colbert will replace David Letterman on the Late Show.

The 49-year-old host, who currently fronts The Colbert Report, will be taking over from the 66-year-old star on the CBS show when he retires next year.

"Simply being a guest on David Letterman's show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead. I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth," Stephen said in a statement.

Stephen hosts his Comedy Central show, which he has fronted since 2005, in the character of a conservative cable news anchor and, although the late-night program will finish its run in eight months time, it is not yet known whether his alter-ego will live on.

Lea Michele and Ryan MurphyLea Michele wants a role on American Horror Story.

The actress is gearing up to film the final season of Glee and intends to remain loyal to show creator Ryan Murphy as long as he wants her to play uptight Rachel Berry - but would happily jump ship to his other pet project for its upcoming carnival-themed series four.

When quizzed whether there might be a Rachel spin-off in the works, Lea remained coy and told chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, "I come from Broadway and on Broadway you stay in a show and that's it. You make it your home. So for me, I like the schedule, I like the routine, and I love Ryan and I love Rachel Berry. So I'll be Rachel singing in a senior citizens home for everyone. I've literally have said before that I will work for Ryan Murphy for the rest of my life. Unless he wants to put me on American Horror Story, I know what the theme is for next year and I'm in if he'll have me at least maybe for one episode. Let's start that campaign right now actually!"

Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan taught Jason Segel "how to be a man."

The How I Met Your Mother actor, who reportedly checked into rehab following his split from Michelle Williams last February, admitted he is really going to miss his co-star when the show finishes up in March after nine seasons. "Aly taught me a lot about how to be a man, I gotta say. I was 25 when I took the show. I think we've all been through a lot personally. Aly and I have a lot of scenes together, spend a lot of time together, and she's always been there to listen to me and give me advice. [She] saw me through hard times and good times... I learned a lot from being around Alyson about the kind of person that I wanted to be."

Charlie Sheen and Chuck LorreCharlie Sheen wants to make amends with Two And A Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorre.

The 48-year-old star has offered an olive branch to his former friend - whom he fell out with after he was famously fired him from the program in 2011 - and promised to reach out to him in person following an appeal on Twitter: "Hey Chuck. I have an idea that u need to hear [sic] after I make amends to you and yours. Which I will do in person. xox C [sic]."

The post included an image of the a People's Choice Award the American series won in 2007 for favorite TV Comedy, where Charlie played Charlie Harper.

The decision to sack the Anger Management star was made following comments broadcast during a radio interview, in which he referenced Chuck's real name Charles Levine, calling him "Chaim Levine," adding that he was a "stupid little man." Charlie also slammed a number of Warner Bros. executives before the show's network, CBS, suspended the final four episodes of the season and fired him. He then filed a $100 million lawsuit against Chuck however the pair later settled out of court.

Charmed+ Octavia Spencer has been cast as the lead for the upcoming NBC remake of Murder, She Wrote. While on the one hand I'm rejoicing that there's one more woman of color starring in a network program, I can't help but worry that TV is going to fall into Hollywood's current habit of incessantly choosing to produce remakes over original shows.

+ Speaking of unoriginal television, it has only been 7 years since Charmed aired its final episode, but apparently executives over at CBS think that it should already be rebooted. I guess perhaps this is the price we pay for American Horror Story: Coven being so damn good.

+ Apparently people are still tuning into MTV shows, because the former music video network has renewed Catfish for another season. I suppose it beats putting out another show involving teenagers and their unplanned pregnancies.

(American Horror Story: Coven spoilers after the jump!)

Halle BerryHalle Berry has signed up to star in Steven Spielberg's new TV series.

The Academy Award-winning actress will take on the lead in CBS drama Extant, playing an astronaut who returns to Earth after a year-long solo mission. The protagonist struggles to reconnect with her husband and son, while also coming to terms with her experiences in space.

The career-changing role will be the Cloud Atlas actress' first regular TV role since Knots Landing in 1991, and is undoubtedly a massive coup for the show. "For five months a year I'll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I'll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one," she said in a statement.

The CBS network has also embarked upon a two-year production deal with Halle - who is expecting her first child with her fiance Olivier Martinez - and her producing partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
