Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick was fired on Monday. The Ravens had a dismal 2007 football season, finishing up with a 5-11 record. The Ravens finished in 4th place in the AFC North Division. Of course, there are only 4 teams in the AFC North Division. Ravens kicker Matt Stover was not critical of the Ravens’ front office decision to dismiss Billick.

“I’m not saying I agree with it,” kicker Matt Stover said of Billick’s dismissal, “but sometimes things have to change.”

27 year old Tony Romo has found a team to spend the next 6 years with. And getting 67.5 million dollars to do so doesn’t hurt.

On Tuesday the quarterback Romo signed a 6 year deal worth 67.5 million dollars. As of this year, Romo has proven his worth, throwing for 1984 yards, with 16 touchdowns and an average of 283.4 yards per game.

“I never really thought this was a goal along the way. I still don’t necessarily perceive it as a goal, but it’s something really neat that I get to experience,” said Romo.

The Pocket Guide To Fantasy Football
With the Football season just under two weeks away, The Pocket Guide to Fantasy Football: 10 Strategies To Dominate Your League from Draft Day to the Playoffs, by Dennis Velasco and David Sandora will be an invaluable resource for participants in all types of fantasy leagues.

This pamphlet is a very quick read, its only 67 pages long. But as a wise man once said, “Quality over quantity. Especially when it comes to fantasy football guides.” This pamphlet’s strong suit is the way it looks at all aspects of the game…not just the four quarters of the game. Pages 34 and 35 give reasons why a receiver on your team might be on the decline, such as a move to a team where they are given a different role, or if their NFL team drafted a receiver with a high pick in the NFL draft. Many examples and reasons for a decline or an improvement may seem unorthodox; but they all can play a legitimate role in your upcoming fantasy season.

In just 67 pages, this pamphlet really pulls out all the stops. The beginning goes over what type of fantasy league is right for you, and even goes over how the “Rotisserie,” league was created. The “Head to Head” type of league is also given a summarization for even the most basic football fan; “Can you see why
head-to-head leagues are great amongst friends? Trash talking galore and well-earned bragging rights for a whole football offseason!”

From there, the book delves into other fantasy areas: Draft types, point designations, and what sources to use to construct your fantasy team. The majority of the book revolves around the 10 tips that fantasy football veterans Sandora and Velasco give out for dominating your league. These tips range from knowing when an NFL player goes on the decline to explaning the infamous Madden curse, and why its not just bad luck that the curse seems to be in effect each season. The end of the book contains complete rankings from Scott Sargent of sportsgrumblings.com of the 100 best players in the NFL this season, and the top 20 quarterbacks, runningbacks, wide receivers, tight ends, kickers, and teams.

It would be handy for the easy going, moderate, or hardcore fantasy football fan to keep this pamphlet handy on draft day. Its a very straightforward and easy read, and contains useful information for you to come out on top of your fantasy league this season.

Brady Quinn
Brady Quinn, who somehow fell all of the way to pick number 22 this year in the NFL Draft, had a very good debut for his team, the Cleveland Browns, today in an Exhibition game. Despite the victory going to the Detroit Lions with a score of 23-20, Quinn made 13 complete catches out of 20 attempts. None of his throws would become interceptions, and he gained 155 yards overall. Brady, a product of Notre Dame, would complete 5 straight passes before an incomplete pass.

Michael Vick
Michael Vick’s world is seemingly falling apart. One of his co-defendants have linked Vick to the killing of at least 8 dogs in his role in a dog fighting ring. The other has implicated Vick to bankrolling gambling on dogfights. Vick may face a minimum of one year in prison. Above all of this, his NFL career may be in Jeopardy. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said of Vick, “It’s just very sad, It’s sad that those allegations exist and now they are confirmed by others. It’s sad that Michael has put himself into that kind of situation. It’s his responsibility for putting himself into that situation.”

Vick has also been accused of lying to NFL commisioner Roger Goodell when Michael was first asked about the situation. Goodell has already banned Vick from training camp this year, but as the case develops and more facts are uncovered the punishment may turn much more severe. Michael vick certainly has put himself in a terrible situation, and whether he can still have a successful NFL career in unknown.

Trent Green, the two time Pro Bowl quarterback the Kansas City Chiefs recently traded to the Miami Dolphins, has apparently taken a cut in pay to play for the Dolphins, resulting in a contract worth $10 million less than what he received from Kansas City.

Even though the base pay is significantly less than he would have received had he stayed with KC (and had they decided to actually keep him rather than go young), the bonuses and incentives in his Miami ink can help make up for that. In 2007, Green will have a base salary of $1.5 million, with a signing bonus of $1 million and a workout bonus of $100,000. If Green can remain active for the entire season, he’ll net a nice $200,000 a week for an active status. If Green manages to stay healthy all year, that’s a bonus of $3.5 million just for not being hurt.

Assuming Green has a good year (including a decent playoff run [snicker]), he’ll be able to earn up to $2.5 million in bonuses. In 2008, Green’s base pay will be $2.8 million with $600,000 in bonuses, and 2009 will net Green $3.5 million in base pay with another $600,000 in bonuses. Even with bonuses his final two seasons on his contract are far below what he would have earned with Kansas City, but that doesn’t really matter, as there’s no way Kansas would have kept him on long enough to pay for those two years.

If you’re a big Raiders fan like I am, you’ll just love this: the NFLPA canceled the final week of their offseason training program due to complaints that it was too hard. “The union has complained about the high level of intensity, player aggressiveness and fast pace of our practices and, as a result, has taken away the final week of our offseason program,” said Lane Kiffin, the Raiders new coach and the youngest head coach in the NFL.

So what exactly were the Raiders doing that was so dangerous the NFLPA had to step in? Were they running 40s in a mine field? Maybe they brought Romo back in for some “special counseling” of younger players.

As many of you know, it’s not officially Summer until Daunte Culpepper pops out of his hole and sees his shadow; or until he gets hurt. I’m not sure if he saw his shadow yet, but guess what? Daunte is hurt! Again! How unexpected!

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Mr. Culpepper was involved in a rear-ending on a Florida freeway last night, not terribly unlike the rear-ending he has given Miami Dolphin fans for the past season. Initial reports have stated he has bruised and possibly torn something in his hand. They’ve listed it as his non-throwing hand, but given his recent performances, that could very well be either one.
