Cleveland Cavaliers Win the NBA Draft Lottery
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Drafts, NBA, News,
After getting done dirty by LeBron James last offseason and winning only 19 games in the Post-Bron Era, the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the odds and won the NBA Draft Lottery and, if you believe the multitude of mock drafts out there, the rights to point guard Kyrie Irving. Oddly enough, the Cavaliers, coming in with the second-best chance to win (19.9%) with their own pick, actually won with the Los Angeles Clippers (2.8%) draft pick. The Cavs acquired this pick with the trade of Mo Williams to the Los Angeles Clippers for Baron Davis. This immediately brings up two questions - why didn't the Clippers protect the pick and why didn't the Clippers protect the pick?

Kendrick Perkins traded away from the Boston Celtics: Good or Bad?
The Boston Celtics traded Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic, as well as a first round pick in 2012 that belonged to the Los Angeles Clippers. Is this move by the Celtics beneficial or detrimental? Perkins was an integral part of the Celtics' recent runs in the playoffs that saw them reach the NBA Finals in two of the past three seasons, including one NBA title. In fact, many think that if he hadn't gotten hurt during last year's NBA Finals, the outcome would have been different where the Celtics defeat the Los Angeles Lakers.

Blake Griffin wins slam dunk contest by jumping over a car
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Kudos, NBA, News,
Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers took a pass from teammate Baron Davis and dunked the ball. Normally that wouldn't be anything special since it happens a lot, but this time it was during the slam dunk contest during NBA All-Star weekend. Oh, and it was over a car. This dunk proved to be the exclamation point to help Griffin defeat the Washington Wizards' JaVale McGee in the slam dunk finals. Other participants included the Toronto Raptors' DeMar DeRozan and the Oklahoma City Thunder's Serge Ibaka.

John Wall wins MVP of Rookie Challenge game
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Kudos, NBA, News,
John Wall of the Washington Wizards was the first overall pick of the 2011 NBA Draft and it's only fitting that he was the best rookie and overall player on the court during the NBA All-Star weekend's Rookie Challenge, winning both the game and MVP. While Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers was the hometown favorite, he didn't play long enough to make as much of an impact of Wall who finished with 12 points and a record 22 assists. The previous record in the game was held by Chris Paul who had 17 assists in 2007. Wall provided many alley-oop passes to his fellow rookies, including Griffin who finished with 14 points, as well as former Wall teammate at Kentucky, DeMarcus Cousins, now with the Sacramento Kings accumulated an impressive 33 points and 14 rebounds.

It’s over! Cleveland Cavaliers win to end 26-game losing streak
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Kudos, NBA, News,
The basketball gods finally showed mercy to the Cleveland Cavaliers who ended their consecutive game losing streak at 26. They beat the Los Angeles Clippers 126-119 in overtime. It was a controversial victory as the Clippers' Baron Davis went in for a seemingly game-winning lay-up that was blocked by the Cavs' J.J. Hickson, but no goal-tending call was made. It was the Cavs' first win since December 18, 2010 and only their second win in their last 38 games. They remain tied for most consecutive losses by a professional sports franchise with football's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The NBA slam dunk contestants have been announced and there's already a clear favorite for the contest. The Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin is one of four dunkers who will show their skills and creativity during the 2011 NBA All-Star Weekend at Staples Center in Los Angeles. The hometown boy should be favored as he's provided the most highlight-worthy number of dunks this season. Other participants include Serge Ibaka from the Oklahoma City Thunder, Javale McGee of the Washington Wizards, and the smallest dunker amongst big men, Brandon Jennings of the Milwaukee Bucks. Who do you think will win?

2010 NBA Mock Draft December Version
Posted by Phil Partington Categories: Fantasy, NBA, NCAA, College Basketball,
June is the month for the NBA Draft, when fans and experts alike chart players and teams to determine which future prospect will be taken by which team. The process is both exciting and captivating, as it hints at the future of many NBA ball clubs. Yet, NBA Draft buzz doesn’t start in June. Even though the college basketball season is just underway, murmurings of where players might go in the 2010 NBA Draft have already surfaced. Here’s an early look at how the draft might shape up.
1. New Jersey Nets select PG John Wall, Kentucky, 6-4, 195lbs
Wall is the consensus top pick at this point. Wall has great size and athleticism for a point guard. After six games, he’s averaging 18.5 ppg, 7.8 apg, 4.0 rpg, 2.5 spg, while shooting 56% from the field and 80% from the line. He somewhat resembles Derrick Rose. Though the Nets have Devin Harris, it’s hard to imagine them passing on a potential superstar like Wall.

2009-2010 NBA Pacific Division Preview
Posted by Phil Partington Categories: Editorial, NBA,
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking like a fantasy basketball team this year. Coach Phil Jackson has the ideal challenge of which star to play at what times. Beyond that, the NBA’s Pacific Division should be competitive in 2009-2010. Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire hope to lead the Phoenix Suns back to the playoffs after a disappointing season in 2008-2009; the Los Angeles Clippers look like a playoff team on paper if they can stay healthy; the Golden State Warriors have plenty of talent, but no chemistry, defense or size; and the Sacramento Kings also hope its stars can stay healthy and the younger talent can continue to improve. Ring the bell, the fight for the Pacific Division is about to start.
