Miyamoto Says AI Can Have the Labor. His Warning Is for Developers Who Enjoy It Too Much.

Shigeru Miyamoto standing onstage, speaking into a microphone

Shigeru Miyamoto expects generative AI to take a lot of work off game developers' desks, and he does not sound worried about it. What he does sound worried about is that developers will miss that work once it's gone, for the wrong reasons.

He made the comments at a press conference marking his acceptance of Japan's Order of Culture, the first one ever given to a game developer. Asked about generative AI, he called it a "similar shift" to the earlier tool changes he has worked through, and said it lets a designer's "true individual capabilities" come to the fore. The quotes are translations via VGC, which reported his remarks from Game Watch.

Nintendo’s Two New Free Switch Apps Are for Toddlers, and a Wooden Block Calls Up the Character

Key art for Nintendo's Hello, Peach! app showing Princess Peach's face below the My Mario logo

Nintendo put out two new Switch releases this week that cost nothing, run with the Wi-Fi off, and are built for someone who cannot read the title screen. Hello, Peach! and Hello, Luigi! are on the eShop now, free on Switch and Switch 2, and here is the complete list of things to do in them: poke a cartoon face, stretch it, spin it, and play peekaboo.

There is no score, no levels and nothing to unlock, and both run single player in handheld mode only. Nintendo's store pages file them under the genres "Action" and "Simulation," which is funny until you picture a toddler dragging Luigi's nose across the screen and decide the tag is doing its best.

Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, with a black left grip, green right grip and gold Triforce on the face, sitting on its bundled display stand

Nintendo built a controller that comes with its own display stand, which tells you exactly what it expects you to do with it.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller: The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition showed up at today's Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct and lands October 29. The right grip is green, the left is black, a gold Triforce runs across the middle of the face, the trigger buttons are gold, and there's a small Hylian crest tucked up top. It launches the same day as the matching Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 console and a carrying case with screen protector, both wearing the same gold Triforce on black (we've got a separate post on the console).

LEGO The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Link & Epona set, showing adult Link riding Epona built in brick

LEGO started its Zelda line with a tree. Then it built a castle. Now it wants you to build a horse, and it would rather not say what the horse costs.

The LEGO The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time – Link & Epona set got a few seconds of screen time during Nintendo's Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct on Tuesday. Nintendo's own description calls it a 1,750-piece collectible display model for adults, due in spring 2027. That is the whole spec sheet. No price, no set number, no dimensions, and no preorder date.

The Zelda movie is called The Legend of Zelda, and drops on April 30, 2027

The official logo for The Legend of Zelda live-action movie, as revealed during the Zelda 40th Anniversary Nintendo Direct

Nintendo had the biggest Zelda stage it has built in years, a 40th anniversary Direct packed with a remade Ocarina of Time and a themed Switch 2, and when it came time to talk about the live-action movie, it showed a logo. The title is The Legend of Zelda. No subtitle, no footage, no release date you didn't already know. Shigeru Miyamoto came out, said a few careful sentences, and that was the segment.

I don't think that's nothing. A logo reveal is still a reveal, and Miyamoto on camera talking about a movie is rare enough that people will pull it apart frame by frame. But seven months out from a worldwide theatrical release, "here's the font" is a strange thing to lead with, and the way Nintendo framed it tells you a lot about how it plans to run this campaign.

The Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 Console Is Gorgeous and Game-Free

Nintendo Switch 2 The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition: black console with gold Triforce pattern, dark green Joy-Con 2 controllers and a black dock with a large gold Triforce

Nintendo finally made a Switch 2 that doesn't look like every other Switch 2. The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition, shown off at Tuesday's Zelda Direct, is a black console with gold Triforce patterns across the back, dark green Joy-Con 2 controllers with Triforce detailing (and, per Siliconera, Zelda pixel art on the back of the right one), and a black dock with one big gold Triforce on the front. The wrist straps match too. It launches October 29, one week before the Ocarina of Time remake arrives on November 5.

It's the first special-design Switch 2 hardware since the system came out last year, and the first time the Joy-Con 2 has shipped in a color other than black. I'd have bought it for the dock alone. Then I read the fine print.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake Hits Switch 2 on November 5, and You Can Hum the Songs

The highest-rated game on Metacritic is getting rebuilt from the textures up, and Nintendo finally put a date on it. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time arrives on Switch 2 on November 5, worldwide, as a Switch 2 exclusive. Today's Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct brought the cinematic trailer you see above plus roughly 15 minutes of gameplay, which is a lot more than the teaser we got back in June.

I've played this game more times than I'd admit to a doctor, and the detail I keep thinking about from today is the microphone. You can hum a song into the Switch 2 and Link's ocarina plays it back. A 28-year-old game found a new party trick.

Switch 2 Owners Are Getting Banned, and Nintendo Isn’t Saying Why

Nintendo Switch 2 handheld gaming console

Turn on your Switch 2 and find that Nintendo Switch Online is gone, the eShop won't load, and the screen is showing error code 2124-4508. Nintendo's own support page is blunt about what that means: the console has been permanently banned from connecting online for breaching the user agreements. A growing number of Switch 2 owners have been staring at that message since Saturday, and plenty of them say they have never run a pirated game.

The complaints piled up on the r/NintendoSwitchHelp subreddit over the weekend. One owner posting as OutlandishnessHour37 bought a console through the Indonesian marketplace Tokopedia back in June. Another, MathPrestigious, bought from Yodobashi Camera in Japan and got banned two days after taking it home. On the Chinese social app RedNote, at least 150 people have posted about losing network features. The reports stretch across Asia, Europe and the United States, though a pile of social posts is not a reliable way to measure how big a problem actually is.

Zelda Gets a 40th Anniversary Direct Tuesday, Switch 2’s Winter Slate Lands Wednesday

Nintendo Direct September 2026 announcement banner

Nintendo is running two shows next week, and the first one belongs entirely to Link. The Legend of Zelda gets a half hour to itself on Tuesday morning, then the company comes back Wednesday to talk about what you can actually buy before the end of the year.

The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct airs Tuesday, September 8 at 7am PT / 10am ET and runs roughly 30 minutes. A general Nintendo Direct follows Wednesday, September 9 at the same time, running about 45 minutes and focused on Switch 2 games launching this winter. Both stream on Nintendo's YouTube and Twitch channels.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe eight-player split-screen on Switch 2

Picture your TV chopped into eight little rectangles, each one holding a friend, a kart, and a red shell with their name on it. That's now something you can do in your living room.

Nintendo pushed out a free Switch 2 update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with no real warning, and the big change is local split-screen for eight players, up from a cap of four. This is a game that shipped on Wii U in 2014 and again on Switch in 2017. Twelve years on, it's still growing new features.
