Sonos CR200 controller to have touch-screen

After a month suspicion, the first image of the new CR200 controller has finally popped up. Sonos will be releasing a new portrait controller, which is said to include a touchscreen, which would include a QWERTY keyboard for searching for artists, albums, or song titles. As we’ve seen with the iPhone Sonos Controller app, the Sonos system and touch-screens go very nicely together. Let’s just hope the CR200 doesn’t cost $400 like the current Sonos Controller.

Blu-ray 7.1 surround For you extreme audiophile fans out there, we just came across a great list of movies that include a 7.1 surround sound audio track. If you’ve got a 7.1 speaker setup, you’ll likely find this list to be worth checking out. There are some gems on here (3:10 To Yuma, Pan’s Labyrinth, Weeds,) as well as a few horrible movies (Disaster Movie, Hannah Montana, Witless Protection,) but the common thread here is that all o the currently listed 90 movies hit you with a lossless 7.1 audio track.

Adobe Incorporates Flash in TVs

flash logoAdobe Systems has unveiled a new version of Flash designed for TVs, set-top boxes, Blu-ray players and other electronics. Referred to as “The Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home,” the platform allows viewers to see TV and Internet content on the same screen. YouTube will also be available. According to comScore, Flash is used for powering about 80% of online videos. Adobe says that the devices will be available in the second half of the year.

Philips Cinema 21:9 LCD TV

Philips is in the midst of developing a 56-inch LCD TV with a 21:9 aspect ratio. The Cinema is supposed to be more like a film screen, which is always a good thing. The TV will feature the company’s Ambilight bordered technology. Unfortunately, unless you are in Germany, Belgium, France or the UK, the wait may be a long one. Philips is hoping to release their new creation this spring, far enough away to start stockpiling microwave popcorn and Raisinettes.

Netflix streaming hits VIZIO Connected HDTV [UPDATED]

Vizio Connected HDTV Netflix is launching a new platform that they’re calling “Conneced HDTV,” and with it comes confirmation of the second direct-to-TV partnership. VIZIO’s Connected HDTV platform is designed to compliment traditional television viewing. You just connect the television to your home network, and if there’s nothing good on, you can go into Netflix, and I am sure there will be other services (YouTube? Hulu?) that you’ll be able to pull up as well. This is a trend we are definitely liking, let’s eliminate set-top boxes while providing more viewing options for the consumer.

EDIT: Okay, we just got more details on this. Aside from Netflix, the VIZIO Connected HDTV platform also brings Amazon Video on Demand, Pandora, Flickr, Blockbuster OnDemand, Rhapsody, Adobe Flash content, games from Accedo Broadband, and the Yahoo! widget engine. Very, very interesting!

VIZIO busts out $200 VBR100 Blu-ray player at CES 2009

So, you know how VIZIO was working on switching from being a discount player to wanting to be seen more as a high end manufacturer? Well, looks like they are looking to merge those two together with their VBR100 deck, which they announced today at . Here’s a look at the features of this 2-inch thick Blu-ray player:

  • Video outputs: HDMI (1.3), component, and composite
  • Audio outputs: 7.1 channel analog audio, coax and optical digital audio, and analog stereo (RCA)
  • Dimensions: 17 X 11 X 2”
  • Includes Remote Control (Oh rly??)

In addition, when watching a standard DVD, you can set the player to upconvert to 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, and it has on-board Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoders, and that can be output from the unit’s 7.1 analog outputs. You can pick this one up in April for $199.99.

Toshiba to integrate Media Center Extender technology into HDTVs

REGZA media center toshibaHey, it’s time, and that means we are getting slammed with news from all ends. Toshiba, happy to get in on that party, has just announced that they’ll be integrating Media Center Extender technology directly into their REGZA line of HDTVs, and that they are even working on a standalone device that you can integrate into your home theater setup as well to get the same functionality. I guess this is the most we can expect from the company whose HD DVD technology lost out to in a major way. We’ve got the full release for you after the break.

SlingPlayer for Mac HD to appear at MacWorld 2009

In addition to SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone making an appearance at , Sling Media has also made it known that we can expect a first look at high definition SlingPlayer content on OS X. Oddly, though, the HD streaming won’t be through the actual SlingPlayer application installed on your Mac - instead, it will be through the browser version at Sling.com. While we’d prefer to see it in the native app (and one would think that functionality has to be coming,) we will take whatever we can get as it pertains to SlingBox streaming in OS X. Oh, and since its housed on Sling.com, the HD streaming will be free.


Netflix HD streaming now available on TiVo

Netflix streaming TiVo

Okay, this is just getting ridiculous, because is just making Blockbuster look downright silly. Hot on the heels of debuting Netflix HD streaming on the Xbox 360, today and Netflix have announced the availability of Netflix HD streaming on all TiVo Series 3, TiVo HD, and TiVo HD XL DVRs. All you need to get this working is the free TiVo Fall Update (which you should already have) and a Netflix subscription. From there, just head into the new Video on Demand menu item on TiVo, and choose Netflix. Once selected, you’ll see a 4-character alphanumeric code. Plug that in over at www.netflix.com/activate, and you are in.

Our early tests even show that Netflix streaming on TiVo looks just a smidge better than the product on the Xbox 360 when a movie is playing (though, we like the interface more on the 360.) We eagerly await the next step in the home theater component domination that is the TiVo Watch Instantly service.
