The Google TV Streamer Costs $150 Now, and Google Isn’t Saying Why

The Google TV Streamer launched in 2024 at $100. It costs $150 on the Google Store today. Same box, same 4GB of RAM, same 32GB of storage, same remote, 50 percent more money.

Google did not announce this. No blog post, no new product page explaining a new value proposition, no statement. The number on the store listing changed, Best Buy's listing changed with it, and if you had one sitting in a cart you found out by looking.

Nothing came with the new price

There is no second-generation model, no new chip, no bundled subscription, no feature that arrived to justify the jump. It still does 4K at 60 fps with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, it still runs Google TV, and it still ships with the remote it has always shipped with. The only thing that moved was the number.

It did not move alone. Nest cameras and doorbells went up on the same day, which both list the wired Nest Cam Outdoor going from $150 to $200 and the wired indoor model from $100 to $130. A whole shelf of Google hardware got more expensive at once, which suggests the pressure is upstream of any one product.

The RAM theory is a theory

The explanation going around is memory. AI companies have been buying up huge quantities of RAM, the argument goes, which squeezes supply for everything else that needs it, including a streaming box with 4GB inside.

It is still unconfirmed. Google has not said that memory is why, nobody outside the company has shown a bill of materials, and $50 is a lot to hang on one component in a device that also has to pay for a chip, a case, a remote, a power supply, and a margin. So far it is a good guess with nothing from Google behind it.

At $150 it competes with a different shelf

At $100, the Streamer was an easy recommendation for anyone already living in Google's ecosystem. It undercut the Apple TV 4K by a hundred dollars, and that gap did most of the arguing for it.

Apple TV 4K starts at $199. The gap is $50 now, against a box with a long track record of staying quick for years after you buy it. Below both of them sit the cheap sticks from Roku and Amazon. The Streamer used to sit in the roomy middle of that range. It is now pressed up against the expensive end while offering exactly what it offered before.

If you want one, move

Amazon was still listing the Streamer at $100 as of Tuesday. That is old inventory at old pricing and it will not hold. If you want the launch price, that is the window.

If you can wait, wait. Component costs move in both directions, and a price set by a supply crunch can come back down when the crunch eases. If memory prices really are what pushed a streaming box up 50 percent overnight, the Streamer will not be the last piece of consumer gear to get a quiet new number on its product page.
