Big Names Attached to VMAs

MTV VMAEach year, the VMAs honor the artists that give us the most appealing music videos – somehow, the artists who get the nods are also top sellers. Beyonce and Justin Timberlake cleared seven nominations each, and both are up for video of the year. MTV’s glitzy awards show always features live music, celebrity interviews, and plenty of moon man statues. Beyonce got the video of the year nod for “Irreplaceable,” while Timberlake’s “What Goes Around…Comes Around” and “D.A.N.C.E.” both grabbed a spot in this best-of-the-best category. Amy Winehouse was nominated for “Rehab,” Rihanna for “Umbrella,” and Kanye West will compete with “Stronger” for video of the year.

Video Music Awards Take on Vegas

MTV logo OK, so the are not one of my favorite awards programs. For one, I don’t even get to see music videos anymore because of all of the reality programming on the music networks. Whatever happened to the days when the music channels actually showed videos? Maybe I’m showing my age here, but when I was a kid (wow, don’t I sound old), there were videos on every hour of the day. Sigh. Those were the days. The VMA’s are trying to change things up a bit this year by making the celebration last all weekend—and filming the show at the Palms Casino in Las Vegas. The producers plan to use the entire property, moving away from the stale stage format that every other awards show employs. Will it make the show any more watchable? Eh, don’t count on me tuning in. If you’d like to check it out, it airs on September 9th.

WEDNESDAY
Bones (8pm on FOX):  Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz return for the show’s sophomore season.
Justice (9pm on FOX):  Victor Garber (Alias) helms yet another legal offering.  I cross my fingers for him.

THURSDAY

Jack Black to Host MTV Video Music Awards

Jack Black Good news for you Jack Black fans—Jack will be hosting the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, airing on August 31st. Said Black of his hosting gig, “Prepare yourself for a rip snortin’ humdinger.” Ah, I love a good quote, and Jack seems to sum up all of the goodness in one small quip. The awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall in New York and will include performances by Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Panic! at the Disco and Ludacris. MTV President Christina Norman had her own succinct quote about Black’s hosting credentials, stating he is the “perfect mix of comedy, rock, irreverence and star power.” Black has been in a string of films, including School of Rock and the more recent release, Nacho Libre. His band, Tenacious D, will have a semi-autobiographical film coming out on November 17th. If you are a Jack Black fan, check out his work with Tenacious D—some absolutely hilarious stuff, although not for the faint of heart. I admit some of the content makes me blush, but I can still laugh through the embarrassment.
