Derek Lowe gets Opening Day call for third-straight season

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The Atlanta Braves announced that for the third consecutive season, they’ll give the ball to Derek Lowe on Opening Day. The Braves will travel from sunny Florida up to Washington to take on the Nationals in one of this year’s untraditional March 31 kickoff games. Even at the ripe age of 37, Lowe still has enough gas left in his tank for a 15th season as a major league pitcher. At least that’s what the Braves organization is hoping for.

Reds prospect Devin Mesoraco making noise in Arizona

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The Cincinnati Reds seem to have a surplus of catching available to them. Most recently, Devin Mesoraco, their 2007 Draft Pick, has caused a few ripples in the organization. While playing behind Ramon Hernandez and Ryan Hanigan on the depth chart, Mesoraco is making it known that he’s gunning for a position in the big leagues, and it may be difficult for the Reds to deny him that right for much longer.

Zack Greinke to start on DL with injured rib

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,
Due to an extreme game of pick-up basketball, Zack Greinke has a hairline fracture in a rib on the left side of his body and will likely start the MLB season on the disabled list. Fans of the right-hander in Milwaukee will have to wait a few more weeks before they see their new ace in a Brewers uniform. It’s the latest mini-tragedy for a team who has had more than their fair share of them over the last 30 years.

Coco Crisp joins lengthening list of DUI arrests

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
If you’ve ever thought professional baseball players were your idols, you should pick up a newspaper. On Feb. 12, Cleveland’s Austin Kearns was arrested on DUI charges. Four day’s later Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera was arrested for the same thing. If that wasn’t enough, Oakland’s Coco Crisp was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz. last Wednesday for – you guessed it – “driving under the influence.” It’s been a busy spring already for the players and apparently likewise for police.

Adam Wainwright suffers an elbow injury

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB, News,
The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a big blow to their success when it was reported that pitcher Adam Wainwright has a possible serious elbow injury and could miss the entire 2011 season. Saying that the loss of Wainwright is damaging to the Cardinals is an understatement as he's won 39 games the past two seasons, including 20 games in 2010, finishing with a 2.42 ERA and 213 strikeouts, as well as second in the voting for National League Cy Young, which Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies won. Wainwright is in the middle of his prime at 29-years-old, so losing a season hurts if it comes to that. However, he's still young enough to recover from elbow surgery, most likely Tommy John surgery if he needs to go under the knife. He's in the middle of getting a second opinion before surgery becomes a tangible option.

Ryan Dempster takes reigns from Carlos Zambrano as Opening Day starter

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The new-look Chicago Cubs under the helm of manager Mike Quade have answered one of their many Spring Training questions on Monday: who will be their Opening Day starting pitcher? Since 2004 the team has handed the ball to Carlos Zambrano, but he’ll pass the “ace” designation to long-time teammate Ryan Dempster come April 1. Newly-acquired Matt Garza was also a long shot for the job, but seniority won out and Garza will act as the number three in the rotation.

Jeff Francis prospering in first week with Royals

The Kansas City Royals are entering a new era without Zack Greinke. In his stead, a group of virtual unknowns will take the reigns of the starting rotation. Among that group is a newcomer, Canadian-born left-hander Jeff Francis, who has spent his entire career that began in 2004 with the Colorado Rockies. He’s got a lot to prove in Spring Training this year, and according to the Royals, he’s prospering in his first week there.

Albert Pujols reports to St. Louis Cardinals camp without a contract

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Front Office, MLB, News,
Albert Pujols, arguably the best overall player in baseball today, did not come to a contract agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals by the self-imposed deadline of Wednesday, February 16th. The reason Pujols designated a deadline was to not cause any distraction during the season for the team. However, considering all the things that Pujols can do and what he's done for the organization, how can his pending free agency after the 2011 not cause any degree of distraction? The usual big money teams, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, already have first baseman, but will undoubtedly have some interest should Pujols hit the market. Other interested teams include the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, and N.L. Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs.

Zack Greinke, the newly-anointed ace of the Milwaukee Brewers is working out in Spring Training and for the first time in his career, preparing to compete with a team that actually has a chance to make some noise this year. There’s some uncertainty regarding his ability, considering his numbers in the last three seasons have been inconsistent, but there’s little doubt that he has some of the best raw talent in the league right now.
