Championship SprintSony Online Entertainment and Midway Games announced that six Midway titles will be brought to the Playstation Network in 2007. The six titles will be Mortal Kombat II, Gauntlet II, Joust, Rampage World Tour, Rampart, and Championship Sprint. Championship Sprint, Gauntlet II, and Rampart all had addictive gameplay; hopefully Internet play will be implemented with limited lag. The releases should be based around the arcade versions of the games; it would be tragic to get a port on par with the woeful Sega Saturn version.

The full press release continues after the jump.

Dungeon ExplorerNintendo announced three new titles for the Virtual Console today, including the delayed Dungeon Explorer for the TurboGrafx-16. In addition to the five player multiplayer Gauntlet style Dungeon Explorer, Nintendo also offers Star Soldier for the TurboGrafx and the classic shooter Gradius for the NES. Both TurboGrafx titles sell for 600 Wii points and Gradius will sell for 500 Wii points. The TurboGrafx console struggled in the US, despite some strong software titles; it is good to see these getting more exposure on the Virtual Console.

Playstation 3 At the opening of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sony announced that 1 million Playstation 3 consoles were shipped to North America by the end of 2006. Despite shipping 197,000 consoles at launch, half of their promised supply, it appears that Sony has caught up with their production goals for the system and have ensured a stead supply of hardware to the North American market. This appears to have resulted in pockets of availability across the country as demand has somewhat cooled in some markets. It will be interesting to see how Playstation 3 sales figures change as supply increases to the market; the Xbox 360, the Wii, and the older Playstation 2 all sold well this holiday season. As supply increases, the true demand for each console will be revealed.

Description

Obviously, Nintendo has been careful to state that the current Wii Web Browser is merely a trial, “beta” version, but this most recent report should make users a little more cautious when taking their Wii online.

The following security report was released by security & vulnerability research lab iDefense and pertains to the version of the Opera web browser currently implemented on the Wii console.

Remote exploitation of a typecasting bug in Opera Software ASA’s Opera Web browser could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the affected host.

A flaw exists within Opera’s Javascript SVG implementation. When processing a createSVGTransformFromMatrix request Opera does not properly validate the type of object passed to the function. Passing an incorrect object to this function can result in it using a pointer that is user controlled when it attempts to make the virtual function call.

The question, of course, is whether it would be worth any hacker’s while to write malicious executable code specifically for the Wii’s proprietary linux-based OS. Of course, given the vitriol with which PS3 and Nintendo fanboys have been attacking eachother recently (note that both Nintendo’s and Sony’s respective Wikipedia entries are locked!), perhaps writing malicious code for opposition consoles could signify the next great front in the console wars.

Xbox Video Marketplace Details are sketchy at the moment, but it appears that Microsoft may be planning on integrating some sort of IPTV into the Xbox 360. Whether this means that you’ll be able to watch streamed (instead of downloaded) video content on your 360, or that you’ll be able to stream purchased videos from your 360 to some sort of mobile, wireless-enabled device *COUGH* Zune! *cough*, we can’t yet say. What we can say is that Dean Takahashi posted and then quickly removed an article about how the Xbox 360 would soon function as a set-top box for IPTV.

Could this be Microsoft’s response to PS3’s LocationFree streaming capabilities? We should know soon enough…

Necro Nesia ScreenshotThis might go down in history as the worst move by Nintendo, ever. And yes, I’m even including the release of the Virtual Boy. Nintendo has decided to bring their ho-hum survival horror game Necro-Nesia stateside, under the oh-so-scary title Escape from Bug Island. Yes, you read that right Escape from Bug Island. Let it just sink in a bit. Escape from Bug Island.

That’s one scary title - if you’re trying to scare people away from buying the game. Frankly, I think Nintendo would see better sales of this game if they’d even decided to call it Don’t Buy This Game: EXTREME. This game had better start finding a way to get some good press before its May 15 release date. As of right now, the gameplay, the graphics, and the title just don’t seem to be cutting it.

Xbox-Scene has further details about the hardware modifications needed for the Xbox 360 to support HDMI. The site has hardware shots of a prototype Xbox 360 board with HDMI support added, along with a video showing the port in action. One of the most frustrating things about the rumors of HDMI support has been how coy Microsoft has been about adding this connection to the console. Early on, the message from the company was that 1080P and HDMI would not be necessary for HD gaming. Now that the Playstation 3 hit the market, however, 1080P mysteriously becomes an available option and an Xbox 360 with HDMI surfaces.

If Xbox-Scene’s information is reliable, then the reason why Microsoft has not been forthright about HDMI support in the Xbox 360 becomes clear; the original Xbox 360 had no chance of supporting a digital output because their vaunted scaler chip, ANA, would only support analog signals. The new Xbox 360 has an updated scaler, HANA, which probably enables digital scaling and HDMI support. Apparently, when Microsoft says that they will “provide an HDMI port to consumers when it makes sense,” that means they will do it when the competition supports it and by offering new hardware, rather than an upgrade to existing users. One also has to wonder if this ties in at all into Microsoft’s efforts to expand the Xbox 360’s multimedia capabilities; content providers may be shying away from the platform without a secure connection with HDCP enabled.
