Jose Bautista and Mark Teixeira heating up in the home run race

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Jose BautistaThe home run race has been tight all season long, and right now, the Toronto Blue Jays' Jose Bautista clings to a one-homer lead over Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees. Bautista is the reigning home run king, and he and Teixeira have a comfortable lead over the rest of the pack in baseball. Bautista has had trouble getting the ball out of the park lately, while Teixeira has been hitting them with ease, so it’s not unrealistic to think we may soon have a new leader soon. If Teixeira can hold the lead for longer than a day, he’ll be the first person to do that to Bautista in over a year.

Pirates’ pen mild without Evan Meek

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Injuries, MLB,

Evan MeekIn 2010, pitcher Evan Meek was one of the Pittsburgh Pirates' top relievers. Pitching for a team that has failed to reach even low expectations over the past two decades, Meek emerged as one of the team’s only reliable late inning options. Meek was exceptional all season long. He finished the year with a 5-4 record, but had a 2.14 ERA in 80.0 innings pitched, allowed 35 walks to 70 strikeouts, had a WHIP of 1.05 and opponents hit just .185 off him.

EndScore Report: Reviewing the MLB Season Thus Far

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, Kudos, MLB,

Evan Longoria and the Tampa Bay Rays are sitting atop the American League East for now.In this episode of EndScore Report, DV and Chris sweep across the MLB divisions for a quick recap of what's going down. It looks like the Tampa Bay Rays are gearing up to surprise the world again, despite losing some key players this past offseason. However, Evan Longoria is still there and healthy.  It's no surprise that World Series favorites, the Philadelphia Phillies are doing well, but it is surprising that the Florida Marlins aren't letting them run away with the NL East division. The biggest surprise has to be the Cleveland Indians leading the AL Central by a significant amount of games. The Pittsburgh Pirates have also been relatively surprising. However, it's still early and the cream always seem to rise to the top. Give a LISTEN to hear our thoughts on the Majors!

Barry Bonds found guilty of one count of obstruction of justice

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, MLB, News,

Barry Bonds guilty on one count of obstruction of justiceBarry Bonds, the former Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants slugger, has been found guilty of one count of obstruction of justice, but a jury of eight women and four men couldn't come to a verdict in regards to three other charges. The obstruction charge could carry a 15-21 months jail sentence, however, similar verdicts for other athletes involved with the long-time steroids case involving BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) have brought six months to a year of home confinement. Something similar should come to Bonds, who has constantly denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs. Speculation will always abound and Bonds will likely always be dogged by this situation. The next judgement will be for the Hall of Fame and it'll be interesting how the voting goes.

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL,

Heinz FieldIn less than 48 hours, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals will suit up and battle at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic. The two teams have prepared by practicing outdoors, reminiscing about past Classics and, of course, building hype by participating in HBO’s controversial 24/7 series. What will all of this lead to? Yet another hockey game. Viewers with passing interest will see a neat sport appropriate for the winter season, but NHL-viewing regulars will see another attempt to build a fan base that’s just not interested.

Dotel leaves Dodgers like so many before him

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Trades,

Octavio DotelFirst Manny, now Octavio. The Dodgers released another of their older roster players on Saturday when the Rockies claimed Octavio Dotel off waivers for a player to be named later. The Dodgers aren’t mathematically eliminated from the postseason yet, but it will take a heck of a lot of stumbling around for them to make a playoff push. By this time next week, the Dodgers will be playing rookies and resting veterans; if they have any left, that is.

A Meek MLB All-Star showing for Evan

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Evan MeekThe National League all-stars have finally broken the streak, and it didn’t even take all 34 roster players to do it. One of those left out of the game was Pirates reliever Evan Meek, who was not only the only Pittsburgh Pirate to be invited to California, but also the first non-closer Pirate to get the invite in over 70 years. Now Meek can say he is an all-star, but is still fully rested for Pittsburgh’s game against Houston on Friday.

Hossa finally finds the holy grail

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Championship, NHL,

Marian HossaThe third time was a charm for Marion Hossa, who, after three straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Final, finally got to hoist the shining silver mug. Hossa’s Penguins fell four games to two in the 2008 Finals. In the offseason, Hossa jumped ship to champion Detroit and hoped for a repeat, but his new Red Wing brethren came up one game (and one goal) short of this feat. They lost, of course, to Hossa former allies from Pittsburgh.

Phenom Strasburg makes phenomenal debut

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Stephen StrasburgSo it’s one win down, 299 to go before Stephen Strasburg guarantees his spot in the Hall of Fame. However, if you’ve seen any of the media attention that’s been given the one-day old big leaguer, his ticket is already punched. The day after the Washington Nationals picked Bryce Harper as the No. 1 pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, the 2009 No. 1 pick stepped up the mound and made sure everybody in attendance knew what the hype was about.
