Trevor Hoffman is mentioned and wondered about if he were on the Yankees. How about the era versus era debate? Would Bruce Sutter or Rollie Fingers fare better? For the past five seasons, anybody watching Curtis Granderson would know that he’s capable of doing something great anytime he steps up to the plate. He’s proving them right this season. Granderson is having a career year with the New York Yankees, and even if it ended today, you would have to give him serious consideration for the American League MVP award. Granderson has already broken several personal bests and is on pace to break several more.

New York Yankees’ Jorge Posada may not be ready for retirement

The anti-storybook season of Jorge Posada became more interesting this week. Not only did the veteran New York Yankees player celebrate his 40th birthday by striking out looking to end and lose a 5-4 game to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, he also announced that he’s considering playing in 2012. The most interesting part is that there’s a better chance that no pitcher will go down with another arm injury ever again than the Yankees signing Posada one more time.

Jose Bautista and Mark Teixeira heating up in the home run race

The home run race has been tight all season long, and right now, the Toronto Blue Jays' Jose Bautista clings to a one-homer lead over Mark Teixeira of the New York Yankees. Bautista is the reigning home run king, and he and Teixeira have a comfortable lead over the rest of the pack in baseball. Bautista has had trouble getting the ball out of the park lately, while Teixeira has been hitting them with ease, so it’s not unrealistic to think we may soon have a new leader soon. If Teixeira can hold the lead for longer than a day, he’ll be the first person to do that to Bautista in over a year.

The AL East is normal with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees in a dog fight. The AL Central has the Cleveland Indians in an unfamiliar place. The Texas Rangers are shooting them down in the AL West. The Philadelphia Phillies are not having as easy a time in the NL East. The NL Central, well, what has gotten into the Pittsburgh PIrates? It's been a while, but EndScore Report is back! However, the question to ask is whether or not Jose Reyes will be back with the New York Mets, both after the MLB trade deadline or after the season. This edition was recorded on July 6th, but the content still holds strong, such as speaking on the possibilities of where Reyes will call home in the immediate and long-term future. For example, can he eventually replace Derek Jeter and take over as the shortstop for the New York Yankees? Closer role still a work in progress

In the last few decades, the role of the closer has grown exponentially from guys who had to mop up games that a starter couldn’t finish to pitchers with defined jobs that earn them save stats all their own as well as paychecks with a significant number of zeros. However, despite the prestige the role gets when successful, it’s still very much a work in progress. On average, teams only convert 68 percent of their save opportunities.

Derek Jeter the 3,000 hit man opts out of All-Star Game

Derek Jeter hit his 3,000th career hit on Saturday in grand fashion with a home run, which helps solidify his future place as a member of Cooperstown. But a calf injury will keep him out of Tuesday night’s MLB All-Star Game in Arizona. Jeter made the announcement on Friday that he decided – on his own – to vacate his spot on the American League’s starting roster and will watch from home instead. He joins teammates Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera as All-Star selections who won’t participate.

Statistically, Carl Pavano’s career has been nothing short of a wild rollercoaster ride. The Minnesota Twins’ starting right-hander has been unpredictable from year to year. Pavano’s no stranger to rough stretches, and clearly he’s learned a lot from his low points in order to be most effective when he turns it around. The only problem for Pavano is that nobody seems to know how long it will take him to improve; or even how long before it gets worse again.

David Ortiz hits 14th, passes Michael Young in All-Star voting

It looks like David Ortiz still has a few swings left in that bat of his. After a few years of slow starts, Big Papi got the bat going a bit sooner this time around. The 35-year-old DH cracked his 14th home run of the season on Tuesday night, lifting his Boston Red Sox over the New York Yankees with a 6-4 win and bringing the two teams into a tie for first the American League East standings.
