On Gear Live: Xiaomi 17 Review: The Compact Flagship That Forgot to Act Small

IdolOkay – am I the only who thinks that Diana Ross is getting a lot of free publicity thanks to Dreamgirls?  The Oscars have already come and gone…yet thanks to American Idol, we’ll still be talking about her after tonight’s ‘theme’ show.

Yes, yes, yes…Diana Ross and The Supremes were a great group.  But are we really prepared to hear male interpretations of their songs?  And more importantly, we will have to endure Sanjaya singing Baby Love?

As always, Week 1 tends to start off a shaky note.  Read on to see if Season 6 was the exception:

Jenna ElfmanJenna Elfman, who enjoyed success on Dharma & Greg and not-so-much success on the comedy Courting Alex, is going to give it another try. The new single-camera comedy, called Literary Superstar, comes from Darren Star and stars Elfman as a book publicist. She’s the publicist with a heart, but the threat of budget cuts make it harder for her to hang on to her clients. She does manage to strike a deal with the corporate powers-that-be to maintain her smaller “quirkier” authors. And you just know that quirkier translates to comedy. ‘Cause quirky folks sure are funny. Currently, Elfman is tied up with a bun in the oven, but once she has the baby, she is on board to begin filming in the fall.

ABC Logo If you’ve got a great idea, head on down to your closest American Inventor audition to see if you’ve got what it takes. The second season of the invention competition is kicking off with auditions in March and April. The grand prize ain’t too shabby—$1 million and a shot at marketing your product. Audition cities include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Orlando, and Houston. Individuals and teams can enter their prototype, sketch or concept, with the main qualification being a product that can be mass-produced and sold through retail stores. The winner last year created an infant seat and is currently developing it with car seat manufacturer Evenflo. All I can think of is the guy from Office Space who invents the “jump to conclusions mat.” Hey, ya never know.

Christina ApplegateI love Christina Applegate, what can I say? She’s a guilty pleasure of mine and I’ll watch just about anything that she’s in. She’s making her return to TV in a comedy, playing a woman who comes out of a coma and has amnesia. Hmmm, doesn’t sound particularly like a comedy—I’m thinking more like a Lifetime movie. The show, called Sam I Am will also star Jean Smart as Applegate’s mom. Smart is a good choice as well, and I have to say this woman just gets better with age. Jennifer Esposito was previously cast as Applegate’s buddy. Applegate, I’m sure you recall, is famous for her role as Kelly Bundy on Married… With Children. She did return to television for the series Jesse, but it didn’t hang around for long, and also guest-starred on Friends. Her role on Friends won her an Emmy. At any rate, anything with Christina Applegate is worth a look.

Julia Louis Dreyfus Saturday Night Live is back with an all-new show this weekend. You won’t want to miss it when The New Adventures of Old Christine‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus hosts on March 17th. Louis-Dreyfus is herself an SNL alum, appearing on the sketch comedy from 1982-1985. She hosted the show last year and is one of the better comedic actors to grace Studio 8H. Musical guest for the show is Snow Patrol.

March 24th, SNL‘s host is Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning. I have to say I’m never a fan of professional athletes hosting the show, and this will be Manning’s first try at acting. But, ever the SNL fan, I will be watching. Carrie Underwood will serve as musical guest during the show.

Regis Philbin One of the hardest working guys in showbiz is going to have to take it easy for a little while. Regis Philbin, 75 (can you believe that?), has scheduled open-heart surgery for later this week. Philbin made the announcement today on Live with Regis and Kelly, saying, “There’s some plaque in some arteries and I got to get it cleaned out.” Huh, sounds a bit oversimplified, but Philbin said that chest pains and shortness of breath led his doctors to this decision. He also expressed his concern, saying “Darn it, I don’t want to do it. Nobody wants to do it, I guess.” Friend of Philbin, David Letterman underwent a quadruple bypass back in 2000. His recovery is expected to take five weeks and perky co-host Ripa commented that she would dress as a nurse and give him a sponge bath during recovery. In the meantime, look for a cavalcade of guest hosts to fill the void on the chatfest.

NBC Logo Hey, as long as they’re both in the Thursday night lineup, it makes no difference what time they air. NBC announced that 30 Rock will be back sooner than planned—the original plan was to bump the comedy for a month to air Andy Barker, P.I., beginning this week. 30 Rock will instead be back on April 5th, as part of stellar night of super-sized episodes. Here’s where the shuffle goes down—on April 12th, 30 Rock will move to 9 p.m. and Scrubs moves to the 9:30 p.m. slot. 30 Rock will hold the 9:00 spot until its season finale on April 26. Then Scrubs goes back to the 9:00 time for a back-to-back showing on May 3rd. Got all that? A bit confusing, but shouldn’t cause too much damage for us fans of the Thursday night block. On April 5th, The Office will run 40 minutes, 30 Rock will begin at 8:40 and run 35 minutes, and Scrubs will run 35 minutes beginning at 9:15. Andy Barker will start at 9:50 (but will not be super-sized) and a repeat of My Name is Earl will show at 10:20. Clear your calendar for that night, folks… it’s gonna be a good one.

Rachael RayIn her attempt to take over the world, Rachael Ray has just signed on as a spokesperson for Dunkin’ Donuts. Dunkin’ is launching a new “health-conscious” menu and wants Ray to sell the heck out of it. Not only will she be the face/voice/whatever of the new line of healthy food and beverages, but she will also help to develop the products. Basically, with the recommendation to avoid trans fats, Dunkin’ is steppin’ up and yanking the trans from their lineup. Ray, of course, is excited (when is she not?)—saying, “I am excited to work with Dunkin’ Donuts’ team of chefs as they expand their menu to include new items for customers looking for more health-conscious options.” Dunkin’s president, Robert Rodriguez, said, “Rachael’s philosophy of creating quality meals quickly and without pretense for busy people living busy lives is the same driving force behind the Dunkin’ Donuts brand.” Oh yeah, he forgot to mention that she is a household name and all around American girl that people are strangely drawn to. Cha-ching!

Mark Burnett Mark Burnett, the creator of Rock Star: INXS and Rock Star: Supernova, is being sued by a writer and producer who believes that he stole her idea. According to TMZ.com, Sharlene Sullivan is suing Burnett and CBS for more than $2 million. Her proposal: “lead vocalists for rock bands would compete and would be judged by well known musicians/rock stars” was registered with the Writers Guild of America in March 2003. Her idea started to see the light of day when she met with a director who was interested in developing the series, but eventually the director dropped out due to lack of interest. Interestingly enough, said director worked on the seventh and eighth season finales of Survivor and worked on The Apprentice—two Mark Burnett shows. She claims that Burnett used her “key ideas.” INXS claims that they conceived the idea in 1999, well before Sullivan’s synopsis was submitted in 2003.
