• Life Unexpected (CW, 9pm):  “Lux does her best to get Jones to drop the charges against Bug.” Yes, he may be creepy and ugly—but calling him dirty is simply unfair.
• Damages (FX, 10pm):  “A Hewes & Shayes job candidate has questions for Ellen about Patty.” Question #1: What are the signs you’ll either be fired…or killed?
• Men of a Certain Age (TNT, 10pm):  Season finale. “Owen sees a glimmer of hope when he lands work at a rival dealership.” Season 2 will see Owen crawling back when his Toyota job abruptly ends.

Thursday Ratings: ABC Remains Strong Against CBS

ABC’s crossover experiment paid off big time yesterday. Despite an all-new lineup on CBS (and the season premiere of Survivor), the Alphabet network finished the night with a win in the demos. CBS, though, did place first with the viewers.

8pm

• Survivor: Tocantins (4.4/13 in 18-49) kicked things off with 13.8 million.
• Ugly Betty (7.4 million, 2.3/6) did about the same.
• My Name is Earl (6.3 million, 2.6/8) was up a smidge; Kath & Kim (5.5 million, 2.4/6) picked up 800,000.
• FOX‘s coverage of the 40th NAACP Image Awards (1.4/4) drew in 4.2 million.
• Smallville* (2.4 million, 0.9/3) was off by 1.5 million.

NAACP Reserves Judgment for New Season of Survivor

If you are on the fence about whether or not to watch the new season of Survivor because of its racial experiment, you’re not alone. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) opposes the concept of splitting the teams by race, but will “reserve judgment until the reality-TV show actually airs.”

“Concerning the new season of Survivor, whether we like the concept or not—and for the record, we do not—it is premature to judge the show purely on conjecture,” according to a statement from the NAACP. “We will judge the show on what we see, and we will monitor the public response.”

In response, executive producer Mark Burnett said, “I agree with the NAACP in that ‘there is no escaping the reality that race is a complex and emotional issue in America, one we are still reluctant to confront and address,’ and I am happy that they have reserved judgment until they watch the series. I would encourage anyone to follow this lead and watch at least a few episodes to get a clear picture of how the dynamic will play out.”

The new season of Survivor: Cook Islands begins on Thursday at 8 p.m. The 20 contestants will be divided into the following groups: black, white, Hispanic and Asian.
