Wednesday Ratings: Lie to Me Remains Strong

After several weeks, the battle between Lie to Me and Lost remains tight. Last night, a Katie Couric special (yes, another one) helped the FOX series catch its ABC competitor in the demos.

  • (26.3 million, 9.9/27 in 18-49) gave up 700,000.
  • * (8.5 million, 1.7/5) lost 2.1 million.
  • (4.9 million, 1.4/4) saw 1.2 million speed off.
  • * (1.7/5) kicked off the evening with 4.8 million.
  • * (920,000. 0.3/1) slipped by 900,000.

Wednesday Ratings: Katie Couric No Star in Primetime

For some reason, CBS chose last night - an American Idol night - to test out a primetime edition of their evening news. Needless to say, the experiment bombed.

Katie Couric8pm

  • (27 million, 10.1/25 in 18-49) picked up 1.1 million.
  • Outside of repeats, the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric (6.5 million, 1.2/3) had the worst demos of the night.
  • (6.1 million, 1.9/5) grew by 1.1 million.
  • * (1.7/4) refreshed 5.3 million.
  • * (4.9 million, 1.1/3) fell by 2.4 million.
  • * (1.1 million, 0.4/1) did 300,000 less than 13: Fear is Real.

Even though it posted the best demos of its hour, the Season 5 premiere of Lost was off approximately 25% from its last opener. Meanwhile, FOX’s Lie to Me debuted to a larger audience than its direct ABC competitor.

MONDAY 1/19)
  • The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm):  “Ricky’s dad arrives in town with a proposal for how Ricky should handle impending fatherhood.” Apparently leaving town is an option?
  • House (FOX, 8pm):  “Cuddy discovers that caring for her newly adopted baby leaves her little time to run the hospital.” Taking care of House and a baby is an impossible feat.
  • Bromance (MTV, 9pm):  “The guys embark on a camping trip, but before reaching their destination, they stop at a biker bar where each must face off against a huge biker in the parking lot.” The reality is, many people want to kick ‘s ass. It’s time to hone their defense skills now.
  • Paranormal State (A&E, 10pm):  Season premiere. “A family believes their new home in suburban New Jersey is haunted. The team’s investigation leads them to dig in the yard for possible answers.” Haunting or no haunting, buried things in my yard is reason enough to move.

Wednesday Ratings: Idol Does Even Better

Even though last night’s numbers for American Idol weren’t dramatically different than Tuesday’s, Day 2’s ratings were significant. It was the first time in five years Idol‘s second night did better than the first.

AFI’s Top Programs of 2008

Even though we’re accustomed to perusing the ‘s lists of ranked movies, the organization also acknowledges excellence in television.

For their 2008 AFI Awards, a 13-member panel chose ten programs for their annual honors. Of the names selected, only Mad Men makes a return from the 2007 list. (Those not included in this round include Ugly Betty, 30 Rock, Dexter and Everybody Hates Chris.) Meanwhile, the only comedy represented this year is NBC’s The Office.

ABC’s upcoming midseason schedule will probably look like a giant gift to some…a lump of coal to others.

The good news? The Oceanic 6 will make their return and the Sacred Heart crew (a.k.a. ) will have their network debut.  The bad news? Pushing Daisies and Dirty Sexy Money will both be given (temporary? permanent?) vacations.

Two and a Half Men: Now that everyone’s forgotten about his star-studded Bobby, director Emilio Estevez will soon be returning to his acting roots. In an upcoming episode of the CBS comedy, Emilio will play a drinking buddy of Charlie’s. (For those who don’t already know, Sheen is Estevez’s younger brother in real-life.) This cameo comes three years after their father, Martin Sheen, guested as Rose’s father.
