Sunday Ratings: Two-Hour Events Dominate Evening
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Amazing Race, The, Apprentice, The - Donald, Family Guy, Saturday Night Live, Ratings,
Last night, viewers had a mixed bag of celebrities to choose from. On ABC, we had a special Brothers & Sisters event. On NBC, the two-hour premiere of Celebrity Apprentice. On CBS, the return of Tom Selleck. So who won out? Although the Eye network attracted the largest audience, the Alphabet network had the demos that mattered.
8pm
- Approximately 12.6 million watched The Simpsons after a NASCAR overrun.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (3.5/9 in 18-49) nailed down 11 million.
- The Amazing Race (10.8 million, 3.0/8) did better on this non-Oscars and/or holiday weekend night.
- King of the Hill (3.0/7) had 6.7 million laughing.
- A Saturday Night Live special (2.2/5) pulled in 5.9 million.
- CW‘s airing of Rain Man (0.5/1) took in 1.8 million.

MONDAY 2/23)
- Chuck (NBC, 8pm): “Jeff and Lester pester Ellie to hire their music group - called Jeffster! - as her wedding band.” That’s one way to ensure the Macarena won’t be played.
- Jon & Kate Plus 8 (TLC, 9pm): “Jon and Kate decide to expand their family with the addition of two puppies.” Let’s not give Nadya Suleman any ideas.
- 24 (FOX, 9pm): “Jack and Renee walker pursue Dubaku through the streets of Washington, D.C., with a little cyber help from Chloe.” If Bauer switched to Verizon, he could have a whole network working for him.
- True Beauty (ABC, 10pm): Season finale. “A winner is named after an intimate interview with editor Jess Cagle tests contestants’ inner beauty and a seminude photo shoot tests their outer beauty.” The finalists will be graded on a curve and their curves.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast. Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)? Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)? Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now). Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien. This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama. This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).
I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight. We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…
Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!
