Could this be the event that brings viewers back to HBO?

Early next year, Oscar winner Kate Winslet will be featured in , a five-part miniseries based on the James Cain novel. (Joan Crawford won an Academy Award for her role in a 1945 adaptation.) The Depression-era set tale centers on Pierce (Winslet), a mother who fights to maintain a middle-class position for her family, and the troubled relationship with her daughter (True Blood‘s Evan Rachel Wood).

Mildred—directed by Far From Heaven‘s Todd Haynes—will debut in the spring.

Kate Winslet as Mildred Pierce

Oscar winner could choose just about any role she wants on film, but she’ll soon be taking her talent to the small screen.

In this picture, The Reader actress was snapped on the New York set of , an upcoming miniseries based on the 1941 novel from James Cain. (Joan Crawford won an Oscar for playing the same role in 1945.) The story follows a single mother during the Great Depression who struggles to maintain a middle-class position for herself and her daughter.

Pierce, which will air on HBO, also stars as Mildred’s daughter, Veda, and Guy Pearce as Monty Beragon, Mildred’s love interest.

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Mildred Pierce: HBO has rounded up a few more key players for its upcoming adaptation of the 1941 novel. The miniseries - which already boasts Kate Winslet as the title character - will also feature Evan Rachel Wood (The Wrestler) as Mildred’s daughter, Veda, and Guy Pearce (The Hurt Locker) as Monty Beragon, Mildred’s love interest. Filming on the five-parter will begin next month.

Evan Rachel Wood Spills True Blood

Evan Rachel Wood as Queen Sophie-AnnAcross the Universe starlet Evan Rachel Wood is shaking things up over in Bon Temps on HBO’s hit series, True Blood (not that it needs any more shaking up), and she can’t wait to drop some hints!

While Wood is no stranger to television, there is no doubt that this will be her sexiest character yet. Of her 1,100 year-old Queen Sophie-Anne, Wood explains, “She’s not necessarily a lesbian. Her human partner is a girl, but I’m pretty sure she goes both ways [laughs]. I think vampires are like that in general.”

Though she didn’t divulge a name when asked about Bill and Eric, she confirms that she’ll be having a “steamy” scene with someone whom we wouldn’t expect.

Coming from someone who nabbed a guest starring role because she herself is a fan, Rachel couldn’t believe what was in store for the last two episodes…

MONDAY (8/24)
  • Dating in the Dark (ABC, 9pm):  Season finale. “In the first season closer, an ex-FBI profiler assists the contestants.” Let’s hope proper background checks were part of his services.
  • The Rachel Zoe Project (Bravo, 10pm):  Season premiere. “Season 2 opens with celeb stylist and her mod squad assigned to dress up five actresses for the Golden Globe awards. Meanwhile, a slumping economy affects the rich and famous when the production of couture gowns drops.” In other news: Us Weekly will devote an entire issue to dresses worn twice.
  • Hoarding (A&E, 10pm):  “A woman whose children were removed from her home because of her hoarding wants to clean her home so that her children can return.” Until then, she’ll manage with the few children she kept hidden underneath the clothes.
  • Nurse Jackie (Showtime, 10:30pm):  “The movie reviewer awakens from his coma to find that his critical senses have been radically altered.” Fortunately, his ability to sniff out crap was insured by Lloyd’s of London.

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Weeds: A Jagged Little Pill will be incorporated into the next season of Weeds. Alanis Morissette, who most recently guested on Nip/Tuck, will be donning more scrubs for the Showtime series. The singer will play Mary Louise Parker’s obstetrician for at least seven episodes and may even return next year. Meanwhile, Jennifer Jason Leigh (Margot at the Wedding) will be around for several episodes as Nancy’s older sister. Season 5 debuts on June 8.

Last January, the Screen Actors Guild Awards was considered a pleasant distraction from all the writers’ strike business. Since the actors now face their own work stoppage, this year’s event once again served as a nice diversion.

With the Academy Awards less than a month away, tonight’s ceremony gave us a better idea of how that broadcast might pan out. Was Kate Winslet another double-winner this evening? Did Mickey Rourke wrestle an additional victory? Is Heath Ledger on his way to that posthumous Oscar? Get all the details after the jump!
