Young and the Restless Reigns Over Daytime TV

The Young and the Restless, Victor NewmanAnd I thought Today‘s dominance over was a long one.

At the end of this month, CBS’ Young and the Restless will celebrate a long 35 years on air.  Although that milestone has been reached by several other dramas, Y&R has achieved something not many can brag about:  It’s been the #1 program for 1000 weeks in a row.

The long-running soap opera passed that amazing marker at the end of February.  For those who would like to be spared the math - that means the serial has been tops for over 19 years.  ( has been whopping GMA‘s butt for only 12+ years.)  The program first hit #1 back in December 1988.  (For a historical reference, that was the same month Libyan terrorists blew up Pan Am Flight 103.)

Whoopi Goldberg Addresses Former Co-Star Patrick Swayze

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, ABC, Video,

On today’s episode of The View, host took time out to talk about her friend Patrick Swayze.  (It was recently announced that the Ghost star was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.)

She revealed that her memorable role in the weeper was primarily due to her former co-star’s influence.  Had Swayze not influenced director Jerry Zucker to cast Goldberg, she would not have received her 1991 win for Best Supporting Actress.

Another Emotional Day for Ellen DeGeneres

Talk show host spoke very passionately today about a topic very close to her heart.  (Thankfully, it had nothing to do with dogs.)  The issue? Homosexuality.

Ellen felt the need to speak up after a 15-year-old boy was recently murdered for being openly gay.  You can see her emotional plea below:

General Hospital’s Underground Fan Favorite

Posted by Jacci Lewis Categories: Daytime, Drama, ABC, General Hospital, Editorial,

Carolyn+HennesyWhether by accident or by design sometimes an actor considered a bit player or non-essential to a TV show’s main storyline becomes an underground fan favorite.

Meet a.k.a. Diane Miller on General Hospital.  Hennesy is one of those actresses who probably gets a lot of people coming up to her and saying, “Didn’t we go to high school together?” or “Weren’t you my brother’s divorce attorney?” The 46-year old classically trained actress looks so familiar because she works steadily in Hollywood and has for years.

Hennesy’s IMBd.com page lists bit parts in everything from Dawson’s Creek to Moesha to Deadly Invasion: The Killer Bee Nightmare but so far none of those roles have launched her into that fabled realm of name-recognition stardom.

Some fans think that should change.  A few have even launched a write-in campaign on various soap opera message boards to get Henessey’s character a life and storyline of her own.

Reality News: ‘WWE’, ‘Big Brother’, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Survivor’

Friday Night SmackdownAfter ten years with the CW/UPN organizations, the wrestlers of the WWE are now in search of a new home.  - a decent ratings earner for the network - wasn’t apparently considered worthy of its renewal price.  Displeased with recent negotiations, World Wrestling Entertainment has started shopping its product around town.

Although the loss of the show will now create a two-hour void in ‘s weekend lineup, the network will now have a place to shelve their experiments gone wrong (e.g. Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants).  Or maybe they can use the spot to air marathons of or Beauty and the Geek

Whatever they ultimately do, they have until Sept. 12th to figure it out.

Daytime Dish: ‘GH’, ‘One Life to Live’, ‘As The World Turns’

Sarah Brown, the first of four actresses to play the role of Carly Corinthos, will be making a return to . Interestingly enough, she won’t be there to take her old spot back (like recently did on ).  Brown will be making a splashy entrance as an entirely new character: Claudia Zacchara, mobster Johnny’s sister.  (Don’t try and question how this could happen; played a different character on the vampire-filled before she became Sam on the bloodsucker-less GH.)

Sarah, who originated the role of Carly back in 1996 (she left in 2001), will not only have a juicy face-to-face with the current Carly (played by ), she’ll have a heated encounter of the bedroom kind with her old hubby, Sonny Corinthos.  I can’t wait!  Brown currently has a one-year contract with the daytime drama and is scheduled to make her debut on Thursday, Jan. 31.

This Week on TV (1/14-1/20)

American Idol

(You can view the whole Revamped TV Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (1/14)
  • Prison Break (FOX, 8pm):  Season resumes.  “Michael suffers the consequences of solitary confinement, Sona-style.”  I hate to think we left him in there these past few months.
  • Kyle XY (ABC Family, 8pm):  Second season resumes.  “Kyle returns to the Tragers to tell them truth about his existence.”  Maybe should consider stealing this show to fill their schedule.  Otherwise, I’ll never get around to watching it.
  • Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (FOX, 9pm):  Regular day and time.  “John grows restless and sneaks out of the house to track down Charley Dixon.”  Maybe they should have recast .  He would have filled this punk role perfectly.
  • CSI: Miami (CBS, 10pm):  Actress guest-stars as Horatio’s ex and Kyle’s mother.  Wouldn’t it have made more sense if she was on the regular ?  Then they could have linked it back to her years.

Dr. Phil Cancels Britney-Themed Show

Dr. PhilFeigning concern for those involved, has canceled the show he was planning to dedicate to Britney Spears’ troubles.  Maybe it was because he actually started listening to his audience instead of preaching to them?

Here is a copy of the statement released through his own website:

“As was widely reported this weekend, at the request of concerned family members, I visited Britney Spears in the hospital. The details of that visit will, of course, remain private.

We had planned to tape a Dr. Phil Now show today, focusing not on the tabloid side of Britney’s latest problems, but instead on the very serious issues surrounding this case. Clearly, it is not just Britney’s family struggling to find a way to protect adult children who cannot be ordered or compelled to seek help.

Because the Spears situation is too intense at this time, and out of consideration to the family, I have made the decision not to move forward with the taping at this particular time.

Britney and her family are in our prayers, and we ask that they be in yours.”

Dr. Phil McGraw

You gotta wonder what momma mentor had to say about all this.  I’m pretty sure even she wouldn’t have stooped this low.
