On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

American IdolPopular talent reality show American Idol has finally decided on its air day and time. After announcing late last month that it would keep the blockbuster reality series in its original Tuesday and Thursday slots—ending weeks of speculation about a possible move of the results show to Thursday—Fox said Monday that during the three-week semifinal round, the live results show will air Thursdays. As previously announced, the audition stage of the singing competition will air at 8-9 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning January 17. No doubt, fans are already setting their DVRs and TiVos.

Ryan Seacrest reported that viewers are in for more than ever before this season. Apparently, the selected hopefuls are more determined than ever to win, and refuse to let anything stand in their way. Not even fellow competitors. Will backstabbing and scheming light up American Idol’s stage this time around? We’ll find out on January 17, when the new season premieres. This kind of buzz certainly whets the appetite:

This new round of Idol, however, may finally cross over into a reality-TV staple that it has since quite admirably dodged: backstage backstabbing. As host Ryan Seacrest recently told reporters — and Randy Jackson now confirms — that this flock of songbirds is more like a committee of vultures. “Every season, when we go out on the audition tour, we never know what we’re going to get,” Jackson reports. “I think the kids this time probably want this worse than ever, so there’s quite a bit of interesting fighting and dialogue going on amongst them. People’s egos are saying, ‘We’re friends and we’re all in this together, but hey, I want to win this — and I don’t want anybody to stand in my way.’”

Seth McFarlaneWow. I knew the entertainment business was fickle, but this is extreme. Fox will soon air the series Becoming Glen, which stars Johnny Galecki of Roseanne fame in the title role. Becoming Glen is the brainchild of Family Guy geniuses Seth McFarlane and Ricky Blitt, and therefore should be hilarious. Apparently, the show is about a successful 40-something guy narrating and looking back on his life when he was in his early 30’s, living under his parents roof. The catch? The pilot was shot four years ago. Fox is just now giving the go-ahead to the stunted series, beating out CBS and NBC for right to the show.

Another look back at where they’ve been…if Jennifer Morrison, who plays Dr. Allison Cameron on House M.D., looks familiar, perhaps you’ve seen her dead. As a vengeful ghost haunting Kevin Bacon in 1999’s Stir of Echoes, Jennifer made quite an impression. I still get the shivers thinking about it, though you have to admit, she’s much prettier alive. Dr. Cameron is known for her relentless pursuit of House, and her ability to force him to confront his emotions, whether he wants to or not. Dr. House better look out. Judging from the way she pursued Kevin Bacon, Jennifer’s not a girl who will give up easily.

Arrested Development CancelledIts a sad day in TV world.  One of the best, most original shows to come on in god knows how long is done.  Its been a long time coming but I wanted to believe that people would just start watching.  They’ve also cut back the episodes to 13 for its “final” season.  I say “final” because I’m praying that FOX decides to save the show at the last minute - fat chance, I know.  I’d love to see HBO pick it up and unleash its full potential.

Cynthia NixonThis is an early announcement, but I’m excited , so I’m posting it now. My favorite actress, Cynthia Nixon, from my favorite (sadly gone) television show, Sex and the City, will guest star on another of my favorite shows, House, in December. Cynthia Nixon will play a patient who butts head with House and refuses to back down in the face of the acerbic House-style insults. If anyone can give it back to House, it’s the fiery Cynthia Nixon. I know I’ll be glued to the TV for this episode.

A Terrific Night For TV

Posted by Rhys Alexander Categories: FOX, WB,

On House, MD tonight (9pm, Fox) the notoriously rude doc will have some suffering of his own to deal with: a visit from his parents. Turns out House is human after all…and here we thought he was grown in a test tube. Word has it that the visit will reveal family secrets and some insight into House’s misery.

On Gilmore Girls (8pm, WB) Rory will finally snap out of her Junior League daze with a visit from her old flame, Jess. Jess, fresh from literary success, will force Rory to take a hard look at the choices she’s made, and admit she’s on the wrong path.

A night full of amazing TV goodness…you won’t want to miss a second of it.

ERThursday has got to be the best night of TV for each network.  You need 2 TiVos to keep up…

ABC:  ABC is the only channel not showing new shows tonight.  They are running “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”  A great movie, but I can’t watch movies with commercials.

CBS:  Probably the best 1-2 punch of the night on CBS.  At 8:00, Survivor: Guatemala.  The tribes are merging and there seems to be some good drama coming from last week’s preview.  At 9:00 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is back from a few weeks off.  At 10:00 Without a Trace is a good alternative if you don’t like ER.

NBC:  NBC starts with comedy, moves to reality, then transitions to drama.  Joey is on at 8:00 followed by the final season of Will & Grace at 8:30.  Joey isn’t doing as well as the network had expected, but it’s a funny show in its own right.  The Apprentice, the good one, is on at 9:00 and we’ll see the 10th, and possibly the 11th and 12th, person fired tonight.  NBC ends the night with the long running ER, with guest star John Leguizamo.

FOX:  At 8:00 The OC is back all new after the baseball break.  Maybe I’m tainted being from Orange County, but this show is the best.  I hope Ryan gets into a fight with some preppy kids tonight.  At 9:00 is the new show Reunion.  Each episode represents a year in 6 close friends lives from 1986 (high school graduation) until 2006 (20-year reunion).  The first episode shows you someone was murdered and one of them is the guilty one.  Its a good concept but not sure how’ll they’ll do season 2.

WB:  At 8:00 is Smallville followed by Everwood at 9:00.  I bet Superman saves the day.

UPN:   UPN has a few really good shows (Veronica Mars,) but they always get lost in the shadows of the big networks.  Everybody Hates Chris at 8:00 is a perfect example.  Its a really funny show, and I’d say its like The Wonder Years and Malcolm in the Middle, if those shows were written by Chris Rock.  Very funny if you get a chance to see it.  At 8:30 is Love, Inc.  followed by Eve at 9:00 and Cuts at 9:30.

Great night of TV.  Have fun watching.
