It’s a Baby Girl for Brooke Burke

Brooke Burke, host of Rock Star: Supernova, and actor David Charvet welcomed baby girl Heaven Rain Charvet into the world on January 8th. Burke’s publicist, Nancy Iannios, said of the delivery, “Everything went well with the delivery, and Rain looks just like her mother.” This is the third girl for Burke, 35, and the first for the couple. Heaven joins sisters Neriah, 6, and Sierra Sky, 4 (their father is Burke’s first husband, Garth Fisher, a plastic surgeon).
Charvet is best known for roles on Baywatch and Melrose Place. Prior to Rock Star, Burke was a model and host of the E! network’s Wild On... series from 1999 to 2002. The couple were engaged in August and are planning a spring 2007 wedding.

Next ‘Real World’ in Sydney, Australia
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Hold on to your hats folks, the 19th (yes, 19!) season of MTV’s The Real World will take place in Sydney, Australia. Production is set to begin next month, with the show airing on MTV next summer. So, does location impact casting decisions? From what I can tell, the producers are looking for conflict and drunkenness—all of the makings of great reality television. Real World executive producer, Jon Murray, said of the new locale, “If there was ever a people on this planet that have something in common with Real World [cast members] it’s Australians. Both [groups] love to party.” Oh, goody. Forgive me for sounding like a prude, but the drunken state of the cast is what has turned me off from this show. Although, I suppose I’ve outgrown the demographic that this behavior attracts. And what of the ‘real world’ home they will live in? Just like in the real world, they will be living in a 20,000-square-foot, waterfront house somewhere in the vicinity of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. According to Murray, bars “are right around the corner.”

O’Reilly and Colbert to Appear on Each Other’s Shows
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Talk Shows, Cable, Cable/Satellite, News,
If you’ve never watched The Colbert Report, what are you waiting for? This little gem on Comedy Central never fails to deliver, in great part because of the character that Stephen Colbert plays. He has in many ways patterned himself after Fox News Channel host Bill O’Reilly. Why then, is The O’Reilly Factor show so annoying? Because it’s not meant to be funny, and Colbert’s is hilarious. What happens when these two worlds collide? Find out on January 18th, when O’Reilly will appear on The Colbert Report and Colbert will be a guest on O’Reilly’s show. “I look forward to the evening,” Colbert said. “It is an honor to speak face-to-face with a broadcasting legend, and I feel the same way about Mr. O’Reilly.”

Bindi Irwin Makes High-Profile TV Appearances
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Late Night, Talk Shows, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
To kick off her U.S. showbiz career, Bindi Irwin, daughter of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, has a whirlwind tour ahead of her. Pretty lofty for an 8-year-old who recently lost her dad in a freak accident that occurred during filming of a documentary. These appearances will promote her 26-part Bindi, the Jungle Girl series set to debut on Discovery Kids this year. To begin, Bindi will speak at the National Press Club in Washington. She will also do interviews on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and The Late Show with David Letterman. She will also perform with The Wiggles at concerts in Los Angeles and New York. Discovery senior vice-president Annie Howell told Australian media that Bindi will “be welcomed with open arms and rightly so. She’s a very special child.” Steve Irwin passed away in September, after a stingray barb pierced his heart. His documentary, “Ocean’s Deadliest” will air at some point during Bindi’s U.S. tour.

“Chappelle,” “Reno” in Syndication
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Syndication, Ratings,
Ah, syndication—the promise land. Well, at least it gives fans of shows the opportunity to see their favorite episodes again, while picking up brand new viewers who might have missed the show the first time around. The latest shows heading for syndication in the fall are Reno 911! and Chappelle’s Show, both from Comedy Central. “The sitcom arena is always one that works well for stations, but there’s not as much product coming down the pike,” said Jim Packer, president of worldwide television distribution at MGM. MGM Studios has been in talks with stations to air the shows. “South Park has already broken the cable-to-syndication taboo and really proven that a show that works on Comedy Central can make it in syndication quite well.”
Reno 911! will be starting its fifth season on Comedy Central, with a film, Reno 911!: Miami, expected in February. Chappelle’s Show began in 2003, with the second season winning its time slot for men 18-34, and a DVD of season one going on to be the best-selling DVD of a television show. Chappelle left the show during the third season, with the final shows airing as Chappelle’s Show: The Lost Episodes.

The O.C. to Take Final Bow
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Cable, FOX, The O.C., Cancellations, Ratings,
There was a lot of speculation about what would become of The O.C. once Marissa Cooper (Mischa Barton) was killed off. Looks like the show, which was given an abbreviated order for season four, will be wrapping up in late February. Fox announced Wednesday that The O.C. was canned, and the season finale will be the series finale. The last episode (ever!) of The O.C. will air February 22nd.
O.C. creator and executive producer Josh Schwartz said of the series, “This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close. Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out than creatively on top.” Since the show’s high ratings in the first season, subsequent seasons have not fared as well. Some speculate that the “real-life O.C.” portrayed on MTV’s Laguna Beach led to the series’ demise. This last season drew much smaller numbers, just 4.1 million, and faced off against heavyweights CSI and Grey’s Anatomy.

Mario Lopez Next Miss America Host
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Cable, Dancing With The Stars,
Fresh off of his successful turn on Dancing With the Stars, Mario Lopez will next be taking on hosting duties for the Miss America pageant. No stranger to hosting duties, Lopez hosted Pet Star on Animal Planet, a contest looking for the most talented animal. So maybe hosting a beauty pageant won’t be too much of a stretch. I kid! He also hosted the Miss Teen USA pageant in 2003, so he has experience with both beauty queens and pets.
“I’m honored. I think it’s going to be great,” Lopez commented to The Associated Press. Last year, Miss America was hosted by Desperate Housewives James Denton. Lopez doesn’t, however, plan to sing the theme of “There She Is, Miss America” when the pageant airs January 29th from Las Vegas.

Bravo to Air Taxicab Confessions
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Bravo, Cable, HBO, Cable/Satellite,
Remember Taxicab Confessions? If you’re not familiar with it, it’s like the equivalent of getting toasted at the local bar and spilling your indiscretions to the bartender. Only it’s in a cab and a hidden camera catches the whole thing. Taxicab Confessions originated on HBO in 1995 and was a long-running, Emmy winning series for the cable network. Bravo will begin airing three new episodes on Friday, December 29th. Then on New Year’s Eve, they will be showing a marathon. “Taxicab Confessions was ground-breaking as one of the original reality series,” according to Bravo’s Executive Vice President of Programming and Production, Frances Berwick. “This award-winning show was raw, moving and shocking while at the same time poignant in its portrayal of urban lifestyles.” No telling what the censors will do with the series, however. HBO allowed explicit comments to air, but not sure that Bravo (home of Project Runway and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) will let that fly.

Ring in the New Year With Ugly Betty
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
ABC Family will be running a marathon of Ugly Betty on New Year’s Eve, kicking off the “Be Ugly in ‘07” campaign. ABC’s campaign asks Americans to rise to the challenge to “be real, be smart, be passionate and be true to yourself” like Betty’s character. Good luck with that.
Aside from the campaign, the marathon is excellent news for those who may have missed this little gem of a series. This is a great way to get caught up on all things Betty, the eager little assistant at glam fashion magazine Mode. The marathon begins at 9:00 A.M. and continues for eleven hours. The whole shebang ends at 8:00, so you can get up and stretch your legs a bit before the big New Year’s countdown begins. Happy viewing!
