Why MTV Reality Shows Make Us Feel Good
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Reality, Cable, Editorial, Gossip,
Like Britney and Anna Nicole self-destructing in tandem, MTV has put out two new “reality” shows about kids who have made and are making some really horrible decisions: “Juvies” and “Engaged and Underage.”
So, full disclosure, I am, in fact, engaged, though not underage, and I have an extensive juvenile record that has, thankfully, been expunged. Just kidding, I was a big ol’ goody two shoes, but I’ve recently realized that I am the target audience for both shows, and, really, just about all of MTV’s reality programming.
Why, you ask (as your coworkers stare at you, because why the hell are you talking to a computer screen)? Because the purpose of MTV’s reality shows is not to give you a glimpse into the lives of others (as it is in … well, all right, that’s the stated goal of most reality shows, even though it rarely happens that way). Nope, MTV’s reality shows are for one reason and one reason alone: to make you feel better about your life.

Anna Nicole Attends Her Last Party
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Reality, Specials, Cable, Gossip, News, Rumors,
Though the Anna Nicole Smith case still hasn’t been put to rest (nothing about Anna’s estate or her baby daughter has been decided), Anna herself will finally be put to rest Friday, March 2, 2007. The beautiful former model/reality TV star will be buried next to her son in the Bahamas, wearing a custom-made gown for the occasion. The very public funeral will give all those who cared about Anna the chance to mourn, but the event promises some surprises for fans, as well. According to insiders, an “undisclosed singer” will perform at Anna Nicole Smith’s funeral. The song that will be sung has also not been disclosed, nor whether or not this will be a previously unheard musical event. Who will sing? What will they sing? For some reason, Anna always manages to just raise more questions. At least some of the mystery will be solved tomorrow, when Anna is finally put to rest.

Hugh Hefner May Marry One of His ‘Girls’
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Gossip, Rumors,
If you’ve ever watched the Girls Next Door, the reality series that chronicles the happenings of Playboy Hugh Hefner and his three girlfriends, you may have noticed that Holly seems to have the most affection for the old guy. Reports are swirling that Hef may actually tie the knot. His number one girlfriend, Holly Madison, is just 27-years-old. Hef, on the other hand? 80?! The New York Post broke the news on Monday, saying that the nuptials are expected before the end of the year. An insider was quoted as saying, “This is very secret, but the word is ‘yes.’ Hef has decided he will marry Holly, and he wants it for his show, The Girls Next Door. Hef thinks business all the time, and looks for a new hook, although he also does really love Holly.” Hmmm. Sounds like a way to get more viewers to tune in, like he’s all business. And, oh yeah, he loves her too. I love how that part is secondary. Question is, how will his other two girlfriends feel about this—and will Bridget Marquardt and Kendra Wilkinson still be in the picture? This inside source also said that Kendra and Holly don’t get along. Holly has been with Hef since 2001. The Girls Next Door‘s third season will begin airing in March.

Donald Trump Bets His Famous Comb-Over
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Sports, Cable, Apprentice, The - Donald, Cable/Satellite, Gossip,
Donald Trump has bet his famous hairdo for a wrestling event. He and World Wrestling Entertainment chairman Vince McMahon both bet their hair for the WrestleMania 23 event on April 1st. A recent taping of Raw, to air on February 15th on the USA Network, shows Trump challenging McMahon to a match. The challenge was brought on after McMahon wanted Trump in his “dubious Mr. McMahon Kiss My Ass Club,” as well as the accusation that Trump stole “You’re Fired!” from McMahon. Trump had some fightin’ words for McMahon, which will air on the February 15th show, saying, “I am here to challenge you to a match at WrestleMania. And I am going to kick your ass!” Of course, these guys can’t actually get into a ring (although that might be interesting), so each will have a representative wrestle for them. Trump’s ultimate challenge? “If my guy loses, you can shave my head. But if your guy loses, I’m going to shave your head!”

Stephen Colbert Ice Cream—Yummy.
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Daily Show, The, Cable/Satellite, Gossip, Rumors,
It’s official. Stephen Colbert will have an ice cream flavor named in his honor. Internet rumors have been swirling about the possibility of a Colbert-themed flavor from Ben & Jerry’s. You know you’ve hit the big time when you become a flavor, and it seems Colbert is as likely an honoree as anyone. The flavor will be called “Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream,” a vanilla base with fudge-covered waffle cone pieces and caramel. The folks at Ben & Jerry’s describe it as “The sweet taste of liberty in your mouth.” Hmmm, that seems like a peculiar description. Since when do waffle cones and caramel taste like liberty, and why does that personify Colbert? Colbert, ever the quick-wit, responded to the new flavor by saying, “I’m not afraid to say it. Dessert has a well-known liberal agenda. What I hope to do with this ice cream is bring some balance back to the freezer case.” All in good fun though—Colbert will donate proceeds to charity via his Stephen Colbert Americone Dream Fund.

And then there were six. Six crazy dudes vying for the attention of Tiffany “New York” Pollard. This time, she had the men fight it out in basketball and boxing before making another cut. The latest victim was Rico, who never even got to have a date with Tiffany. She matched each suitor up for a one-on-one game against WNBA player Tamara Moore. If they could score before her, they took a place in the “winners circle”. Only two guys scored on Moore, resulting in a duel for a date with New York. White Boy won the coveted prize, with Rico ending up the loser. In the end, Rico was cut loose, with New York saying he was a “young boy.” He got the last word when he said her choice was “crap.” Ahhh, love. VH1 celebreality style.

Sarah Silverman Program Gets Renewed
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Ratings, Renewals,
I just reported last week about the phenomenal ratings that the new Comedy Central show, The Sarah Silverman Program enjoyed. Unbelievable enough, after just two episodes, the comedy network ordered a second season. Comedy Central announced today that the second season will include fourteen episodes total, seven of which will air in the fall. The two episodes that have aired drew an average of 1.7 million viewers, with a timeslot win for 10:30 - 11:00 p.m for men ages 18-24. With solid numbers, the network couldn’t pass it up. Lauren Corrao, Comedy Central’s executive vice president for original programming and development said of the renewal, “The exceptional critical acclaim combined with the fantastic ratings has created a new Thursday night destination for our viewers. The show is smart, innovative, irreverent and politically incorrect—that, to me, is the purest example of a Comedy Central success.”

Paula Abdul Sued Over Reality Show
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Bravo, Cable, FOX, American Idol, Cable/Satellite,
Oh Paula, what trouble have you gotten into now? Paula Abdul has certainly gotten her fair share of attention lately—unfortunately, it’s not for anything too positive. Her wacky comments and slurred speech on American Idol, as well as her less-than-coherent television interview have all brought criticisms. Now add another kookoo item to the list: Abdul is being sued by a production company, saying that she took their reality concept and shopped it elsewhere. The company was to produce a reality series about her life, called Hey Paula!. You may recall that a series of the very same name is expected to air on Bravo. The series is a behind-the-scenes look at Abdul, both personally and professionally. In the lawsuit, the production company is seeking compensation and damages, but they are also fighting to prohibit the show from being aired by anyone. Perhaps now the series will never see the light of day?

Sarah Silverman Has a Hit on Comedy Central
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Ratings,
Way to go, Sarah Silverman. Her show, The Sarah Silverman Program was a ratings winner for Comedy Central. The show debuted last Thursday, bringing in about 1.8 million viewers and was the most watched primetime cable show for viewers ages 18-49. This marks the biggest debut for an original program on Comedy Central since Drawn Together debuted in 2004. I saw Silverman’s show and really enjoyed it. I’ve read some criticism of her online that says her schtick is getting old, but isn’t that what comedians do? I don’t find everything she says side-splittingly (is that a word?) funny, but I always like to see what crazy thing she’ll say next. In most cases, I can’t even believe the things coming out of her mouth—but that’s the point, I suppose. Her turn as a regular on Crank Yankers was always a highlight of the show. Check out The Sarah Silverman Program on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. It’s definitely worth a look.

Justin Timberlake Will Host Kids’ Choice Awards
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Justin Timberlake is a kids’ favorite, so why not let the singer/actor host Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards? This is the 20th installment of the awards program, which lets kids pick their faves among movies, TV, music, sports, books, and video games. Wow, 20 years doesn’t even seem right. Has Nickelodeon even been around that long? At any rate, Timberlake, who has won the Kids’ Choice award for Best Burp twice, will get to show his worth as host. Will there be burping? You can probably bet on it. Timberlake is also nominated for best male singer. “While honoring kids’ opinions, it taps into the kid in all of us,” said Timberlake about the event. The Kids’ Choice Awards airs on March 31st—kids can vote online for their favorites beginning on March 5th.
