A’s pick up Gaudin from Yankees trash bin

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Chad GaudinChad Gaudin will be moving clear across the country. After being released by the New York Yankees on Thursday, the right-handed pitcher reached an agreement with Oakland worth $700K. Gaudin, who was primarily a starter with the Yankees in 2009 will likely end up as part of the A’s bullpen as many of their current hurlers are sidelined with various injuries. This is a good pickup for the A’s as Gaudin can be used as both a starter and reliever, based on where he’s needed most.

Will first time be a charm for Alomar?

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB, Rumors,

Roberto AlomarRoberto Alomar is generally seen as one of the best defensive second basemen of his era. After breaking into the big leagues in a big way with the San Diego Padres, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays with Joe Carter in a blockbuster deal that sent Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez the other way. This turned out to be a launching point for Alomar’s career. He was an All-Star in every season during the 90’s, and in total 12 times. He won four silver slugger awards and 10 gold gloves, and is now eligible for entry into the Hall of Fame. It’s a no-brainer that he’ll make it, the question is whether or not he’ll do so in his first year of eligibility.

NL Gold Gloves a golden joke

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB,

Ryan ZimmermanThe National League handed out their Gold Glove Awards, and as usual, there was a sense of comic relief because of some of the winners – specifically at third base. Ryan Zimmerman of the Washington Nationals took home his first Gold Glove, perhaps solely because the Nats needed anything with which to say 2009 was successful. He finished ahead of a much more deserving candidate from San Diego in Kevin Kouzmanoff. The suspicion is that Gold Glove winners – a defensive honor – are often chosen based on offensive statistics. A comparison between the two NL third basemen gives credit to that theory.

Canada’s team may not be for Canada’s Bay

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, Editorial, MLB, Trades,

Jason BayJason Bay has a history of success. Being a 22nd round draft pick by the Montreal Expos, not many expected much of him. He was traded from the Expos to the San Diego Padres to the Pittsburgh Pirates between 2002-2003, making his MLB debut along the way. However, 2004 was the year he made the greatest impact. He hit .282 in 120 games, and lead all rookies 26 home runs, 82 RBI, .550 slugging, 54 extra base hits and 226 total bases. His accomplishments earned him the 2004 NL Rookie of the Year Award; the first time for any Canadian. In 2008, he was traded to the Red Sox to replace Manny Ramirez, and he has fit in perfectly.

Randy Wolf Shipped to Houston

Randy Wolf
Randy Wolf was traded from the San Diego Padres to the Houston Astros on Monday in exchange for 26 year old pitcher Chad Reineke. On the season, Wolf is 6-10 with a 4.74 ERA and an unimpressive 1.42 WHIP. Houston Astros GM Ed Wade hasn’t given up on the 2008 season (The Astros are 46-54 this season), and acquired Wolf to shore up the rotation.

“Randy is an experienced starter and a great competitor,” said Wade, who had Wolf during part of his time as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. “We tried to sign him as a free agent during the off-season, but the chance for him to pitch close to home prevailed. I’ve known Randy since the day he signed his first professional contract, and I can say without hesitation that he brings every quality that you’d want in a member of your team, both on and off the field.”
