Top NFL prospects not to show at the NFL Draft?
It's being reported that the top NFL prospects for the 2011 NFL Draft are being told by the NFLPA (yeah, sure, they're decertified and not working as a group anymore) to not show up at next month's draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The union is suggesting that the draft prospects partake in another activity that it seems would be run by the union and would give a similar experience that being at the NFL Draft would give. Understand that in the battle between the owners and players, I consider the owners more in the wrong, but is the NFLPA serious?

There was only a small bit of hope that came in the form of two deadline extensions to continue to negotiate, but it wasn't enough as the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) led by DeMaurice Smith chose to decertify their union, allowing individual players to join together, not as a union, to sue the NFL owners. In turn, the NFL owners locked out their players from team facilities. No communication is allowed between players and the organization and its employees, such as coaches. Needless to say, the 2011 NFL season is now in jeopardy unless litigation can be settled quickly or somehow the two opposing sides can come to an agreement outside of court.

New York Jets beat Indianapolis Colts 17-16 on last second field goal

In what was a grudge match between the New York Jets and Indianapolis Colts, the hype before the game was certainly warranted as the contest was decided as the clock wound down. The Jets were able to pull out a win, exacting revenge for last season's AFC Championship loss. With the Jets up 14-13, Peyton Manning was able to lead the Colts down the field to set up an Adam Vinatieri field-goal to take a 16-14 lead with 0:53 seconds left on the clock. It looked all, but over. However, Antonio Cromartie took the ensuing kick-off for 47 yards, giving the Jets excellent field-position. It paid off, along with a Mark Sanchez to Braylon Edwards 18-yard completion to get the ball to the Colts' 14-yard line. Then with clock ticking off the clock, Jets kicker Nick Folk hit the game-winning 32-yard field goal to give the Jets a 17-16 victory. A Rex Ryan-led team finally beat Peyton Manning and the Colts. Hallelujah. The Jets move on to face the New England Patriots.

Last week I wrote: “The Saints, to win, must sustain long drives and keep Peyton Manning off the field.” Somewhere between a Colts’ ten-point lead in the first quarter of the Super Bowl to the end of the second quarter, the Colts lost their mojo. Peyton Manning only had six snaps in the second quarter! Then the Colts lost the second half kick-off. Drew Brees spent the second half spraying the ball around to everyone, and the Saints took Super Bowl XLIV, 31-17.

Went 2-0 with the Indianapolis Colts-New York Jets and New Orleans Saints-Minnesota Vikings match-ups. Season record hits 51-37. Look for the Indianapolis Colts to defeat the New Orleans Saints at Super Bowl XLIV. The Saints defense wants to punish Peyton Manning and the Colts defense may be without a healthy DE Dwight Freeney.

Other than the New York Jets upset over the San Diego Chargers, all the favorites won last week. I went 3-1 and the season mark runs to 49-37. Will it be Peyton Manning or Brett Favre returning to the Super Bowl? What about those upstart Jets? Will there be more celebrating in New Orleans this weekend?

The quarterfinals of the NFL tournament are set. Last week I went 2-2. Season record hits 46-36. There’s a reason why the upcoming playoff home teams got byes last week. They’re a cut above the competition. The favored New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals lost last weekend. Were they out-played or just not so good? Will any of the favorites this week be out-played or have a bad day?

True Predictions: Colts Will Lose, Saints Will Win and Home Sweet Home

Last week’s 2-3 record places the season mark at 38-29. I need some wins and let’s hope that some home-cooking will be the recipe for success this week. We’ve got six games picked and I’m going with the home team for all. Last week the Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers took expected victories, but in statement games I was off the mark as the Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings got it done over the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Bengals, respectively. The Miami Dolphins kept their wild card hopes alive by knocking off the Jacksonville Jaguars, who currently hold a wild card spot.
