San Francisco Giants win series, look to break history

Talk about Giant killers. The San Francisco Giants made just about every unconventional move you could think of, and it seemed like each decision paid off. They’ll be heading to their first World Series since 1954 to face the Rangers who will be going to their first World Series ever, and without any official announcements, it’s probably safe to assume that two of the game’s best pitchers, Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum, will be throwing first pitches for their respective teams.

The Cincinnati Reds may have found an expensive problem for themselves this offseason. All of Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto and MVP candidate Joey Votto are all eligible for arbitration, and all have made cases that they’re worth significantly more than the $1.5M combined they have earned this past year. It’s likely that each one will earn money individually next season that will eclipse this combined total. But can the Reds afford to spend that much more money?

Miguel Cabrera’s season is done with ankle sprain

Miguel Cabrera’s season came to an early end when he was scratched from Wednesday’s game with a sprained ankle. That freezes his 2010 statistics where they are at 150 games played, 38 home runs, 126 RBI, a .328 average, a 1.042 on-base plus slugging percentage, 111 runs scored and 180 hits. His stats have him right in the middle of the conversation about who will be this year’s American League Most Valuable Player, but one fact hurts him more than the rest.

Pete Rose to be honored by Cincinnati Reds for 25th anniversary

Pete Rose, baseball’s infamous gambler, still is not – and may never be – in the MLB Hall of Fame. But the former Cincinnati Reds player and manager will be honored by his former club for the 25th anniversary of his breaking Ty Cobb’s all-time career hits total. The Reds received permission from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to honor the disgraced hitter for just the second time since being banned in 1989. Rose missed out on the Reds honoring of the 1975 World Series champions in 2000 as well as the old-timers softball game commemorating the closing of Cinergy Field in 2002.

Where is Joey Votto?

If baseball chose a most valuable player for the first half of the season, Joey Votto would definitely be on the list of potential winners for the National League. Despite that, his name wasn’t found on the list of 2010 National League All-Stars. Instead, he’s on the short list for the final vote this week and fans can select him to the final spot on the NL roster, but he’s up against some strong competition.

A goalie can definitely steal a series, but can a goalie steal a Stanley Cup? That’s the question being asked about Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. Facing the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2010 NHL Playoffs, Buffalo will be putting a lot of weight on their Olympic goaltender in their first playoff appearance in three years. But Miller isn’t looking at the past. His full attention is on the series against Boston, and he looked pretty good in his first game.

Pedroia good to go after wrist scare

The Boston Red Sox avoided a huge scare on Wednesday when they announced that All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia’s x-rays revealed no long term damage and he will be fine. Pedroia sprained his left wrist on Tuesday in a game against the Twins when he dove for a ground ball off the bat of Denard Span. Pedroia had x-rays on Wednesday morning and is already asking coach Terry Francona to get him back in the lineup for Thursday’s game against Florida.

Mauer inks monster deal with Minnesota

Joe Mauer isn’t going anywhere. The Minnesota Twins showed incredible financial fortitude as well as some club loyalty to their hometown, homegrown all-star by inking an eight-year, $184 million contract extension. The Twins now have Mauer locked up through 2018. The deal includes a no-trade clause and averages $23 million per year. The deal is the fourth-largest in MLB history in both total and average salary. The Twins will make the deal official to the media on Monday.

Pujols will play in 2010

Albert Pujols is going to play. He faced the media this weekend after his first spring workout and has said that his elbow is fine and there’s a good chance he’ll never need the dreaded Tommy John surgery. After going under the knife last October to repair and clean the bones in his elbow, the St. Louis slugger was happy to say that his elbow is responding well and he hopes he’ll be able to play a full season.

With the recent announcement that Tim Lincecum was the National League Cy Young Award winner, it leaves only two more 2009 Major League Baseball award winners to be announced, which will be done this coming Monday. One of those is the American League Most Valuable Player, and, like the NL Cy Young, the AL MVP race couldn’t be closer. With Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Miguel Cabrera, and Joe Mauer in the hunt, the award could go to anybody.
