San Francisco Giants claim Heath Bell on waivers from San Diego Padres

When the MLB non-waiver trade deadline passes, virtually every player in the league is put on waivers. Most of them go unnoticed as players get through or teams pull players back into the fold. However, reports that the San Francisco Giants have claimed San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell is making headlines all over the blogosphere. The Giants and Padres now have two days to complete a trade, or else Bell will be forced to play out the rest of the season in a Padres uniform.

Heath Bell looks like one of the most attractive players who may be available at this year’s non-waiver trade deadline. Reports are coming out of most cities saying that team so-and-so has inquired about Bell, but does that mean San Diego Padres GM Jed Hoyer is likely to trade him? Not necessarily. Many GMs will call Hoyer simply to find out the asking price for Bell, many of whom have no interest in actually putting together a deal.

Scott Boras to represent Rafael Soriano

Scott Boras has signed another one. He inked Rays closer Rafael Soriano to a deal and will represent him as his contract with Tampa Bay comes to a close and he begins to search for a new; and significantly higher-paying deal. As one of the top closers in baseball this year, holding his own with the likes of Mariano Rivera, Jonathan Papelbon and Heath Bell, Soriano will demand top dollars from whatever team he winds up with.

Dotel leaves Dodgers like so many before him

First Manny, now Octavio. The Dodgers released another of their older roster players on Saturday when the Rockies claimed Octavio Dotel off waivers for a player to be named later. The Dodgers aren’t mathematically eliminated from the postseason yet, but it will take a heck of a lot of stumbling around for them to make a playoff push. By this time next week, the Dodgers will be playing rookies and resting veterans; if they have any left, that is.

The Tampa Bay Rays pitching is driving the ship

The Tampa Bay Rays are picking a poor time to go through a team-wide slump. After a 17-11 thrashing from the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, the Rays have now lost four in a row; the longest losing skid of the season for the American Wild Card leaders. Despite the 17-run outburst, the Rays have some of the best pitching in baseball. The night before they lost 2-1, but both were unearned; just the second time in club history they have lost without giving up an earned run.

Chris Coghlan and Huston Street suffer bizarre injuries

It has been a strange week for injuries. After Sunday’s Marlins victory over the Braves, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, Chris Coghlan, torn a meniscus in his left knee while delivering a celebratory pie to the face of one of his teammates. Coghlan is now on the disabled list, and it’s not sure if he’ll even play ball again this season. If surgery is not required immediately, Coghlan will be able to take the field again, but you know everybody will be thinking of that left knee and how it will affect his play.

Breaking down San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell

If there were an award for Closer of the Year, San Diego’s Heath Bell would be a top candidate to take home the National League version of the hardware. Through July 24, Bell has been called upon to close out 31 games for the Padres and has been successful 28 times; averaging seven each month throughout the season. In fact, the last time he couldn’t get the job done was on May 26, when St. Louis touched him up for a run in a game the Padres ended up winning in 13 innings.

A Meek MLB All-Star showing for Evan

The National League all-stars have finally broken the streak, and it didn’t even take all 34 roster players to do it. One of those left out of the game was Pirates reliever Evan Meek, who was not only the only Pittsburgh Pirate to be invited to California, but also the first non-closer Pirate to get the invite in over 70 years. Now Meek can say he is an all-star, but is still fully rested for Pittsburgh’s game against Houston on Friday.

Is Papelbon the current Rivera?

It was a busy week and change for Jonathan Papelbon. On the 19th, he helped his team defeat the Dodgers and got a win. The following day was a similar Red Sox victory, this time getting a save for his efforts. On the 23rd, the Rockies made quick work of Papelbon, giving him his first blown save of the season as well as a loss. The next night looked similar as Papelbon blew another save, but his team bounced back and he got his second win of the week. On Saturday, Papelbon returned to normal recording his 17th save of the season in an eight-pitcher effort to defeat the Giants.

Padres triple threat: Bell, Gregorson and Adams

When the San Diego Padres take a lead into the seventh inning, consider that game a victory. With the bullpen trio of Mike Adams, Luke Gregerson and closer Heath Bell, the Padres have a triple-threat of pitchers who could all be trusted to close out games. Manager Bud Black has shown that he’s not afraid to use any of the three in any situation, and the Padres are holding onto a slim lead in the NL West as a result.
