Alex RodriguezThe American League Championship Series is set. The Los Angeles Angels will take on the New York Yankees. As half of the nation turns their collective support from the Minnesota Twins to the Angels, the other half will continue to battle against the opposition’s growing fan base as the playoffs roll on. The Yankees and their 103 regular season victories will welcome the Angels into New Yankee Stadium on Friday night for a weekend of “Bronx cheers”, if you will, and serenades by Frank Sinatra.

The Yankees versus anybody is like the classic battle between good versus evil… or evil versus good. They are arguably one of the most fan-polarizing teams in professional sports. What’s to like about a team that spends almost twice as much as the rest of the league in order to buy their way into the playoffs, stall games to put them near the four-hour mark on average, and basically beat their opponents with nothing more than their sense of entitlement.

Jorge De La RosaThrough the first two games of the NLDS, the Colorado Rockies have a lot of questions that need answers. How do they keep Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez off the base paths? How do they relieve an already taxed rotation? How do they give themselves the best chance to win? The answer to all of those questions is Jorge De La Rosa.

De La Rosa strained his left groin in his final start of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 3rd, in a game where he was hurling a gem. He had faced the minimum nine batters through the first three innings before leaving with the injury that has kept him sidelined since. He claimed that he’s ready for the NLDS, but skipper Jim Tracy hasn’t officially made his decision on which arm he’ll put on the mound in Game 4 against the Phillies.

Jason BayTwo down, one to go. That’s the only thing going through the minds of the Los Angeles Angels. Two games into their ALDS series against the Boston Red Sox, the Angels are up two wins to zero, and can clinch a ride to the League Championship Series with a third win on Sunday afternoon. However, as has been said time and time again, the hardest game to win is the last one, and you can be sure that the Red Sox will not go down without a fight.

Fate is working both for and against the Angels in this series. It is working for them in the fact that since the Divisional Series’ were introduced in 1995, only four teams have ever come back to win a series after being down 2-0. Two of those were the 1995 Seattle Mariners who beat the New York Yankees, and the other was the 2001 Yankees, who took down the Oakland Athletics. However, fate is working against the 2009 Angels, because those other two teams that came back from 2-0 down were the 1999 and 2003 versions of the Boston Red Sox.

Ryan HowardWith the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers extra-inning division game nail-biter in the books, we now know the eight playoff teams. With that, here’s a Gear Live exclusive detailing exactly what is going to happen in each respective league in the 2009 MLB playoffs. Some may shock you, but it’s all true, so pay attention.

In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals and their best three-man rotation in baseball, led of course by Chris Carpenter and his near-unanimous “Comeback Player of the Year” award; will make short work of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. The St. Louis starters will each flirt with perfection, but L.A. will manage to score three measly runs in the three game series; one per game. Each run will be come via a solo blast by Manny Ramirez, still trying to show the baseball world that he can ruin anything special that baseball has to offer. The other series will be much the same, with the Philadelphia Phillies starting Cliff Lee in three games against the Colorado Rockies, just to see if he can finally prove that he actually is better than Roy Halladay. He’ll win two, but it will take a group effort for Philadelphia to clinch the divisional series.

September is here, and so the home stretch for the 2009 MLB season is upon us. The playoff races will take center stage in sports media, but for the first time in years, the races look as if they might be over before they really get started. Going into Wednesday night’s action, the closest pennant race was the American League Central, where the Detroit Tigers hold a 3.5 game lead over the Minnesota Twins, who, when it comes to playoff races, are a pathetic two games above .500. In the Central’s National League counterpart, the St. Louis Cardinals have already all-but-clinched the division as they hold a 10.5 game lead over the Chicago Cubs. It would take a colossal turn of events for the Cards to miss the playoffs in 2009.

Troy Tulowitzki

With the Colorado Rockies on a tear in the last two weeks, in direct contrast to the sloppy play from the Los Angeles Dodgers, it looks like we might have a pennant race on our hands over in the National League West. Going into their mid-week three game series against each other, the Dodgers held a three game lead over the Coloradans; and after Tuesday night, the gap shrunk thanks to Troy Tulowitzki’s 10th inning walk-off single.

The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Orlando Magic four games to one in the NBA Finals, earning the team’s 15th NBA title.  Put in a historical perspective, they are now 15-15 in NBA Finals match-ups and are second only to the Boston Celtics and their 17 NBA titles for most championships by a franchise.  Phil Jackson also moved ahead of Red Auerbach for the most titles by a head coach, winning his 10th NBA title, the fourth with the Lakers.  His other six came with the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls. Perhaps, most importantly, Kobe Bryant won a title with Shaquille O’Neal… okay, it’s only important to all those that hated on Kobe and said he couldn’t win a title without Shaq (this group includes Shaq himself), well, in your face!

Bryant was a symbol of will and determination and getting the job done.  In fact, such ferocity and competitiveness hadn’t been seen since Jordan took the court.  And now, the monkey is off his back and if the Lakers can somehow sign both Trevor Ariza and Lamar Odom, the Lakers could win a few more championships.  Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum are locked in and provide great interior presences, Derek Fisher looks as if he can still play for a few years and it looks like Jordan Farmar will be ready to take up the PG mantle.  Contractually, Jackson only has one more season left, but if the core group of players can stay intact, don’t be surprised if he signs another extension.  This season, Jackson seemed less stressed because of team chemsitry and the lack of two alpha males (Kobe and Shaq) going at it.

Congratulations to the Lakers and their fans.  And to all the Kobe haters, bite it!
