Waking up after another ridiculous impact game from Jaroslav Halak as the Canadiens evened up their series with the Penguins last night at two games apiece, I quickly realized that I had no idea that the other series in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia against Boston, is even going on. After taking a quick look, I found that Boston holds a 3-0 stranglehold on the Flyers with a chance to clinch tonight. I also found that I’m not alone in my ignorance over this series.

Can you believe it? The unthinkable has happened! Goliath has been beaten by David again. That is, the Montreal Canadiens have ousted the Washington Capitals in the first round, and what’s worse is that not only was it a opening series upset, but it was also a President’s Trophy-winning team that fell to a lowly opponent that barely made their way into the postseason. Sure the series went the seven-game distance, but that’ll be no consolation to Washington fans.

The state of hockey in the state of Pennsylvania is good. With both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers moving on to the second round of the 2010 NHL playoffs, there’s a storyline nobody expected to come taking place. We’re still a full series away from a potential Stanley Cup-berthing series, but as two of the remaining eight teams, the Keystone state is well-represented; although the two teams arrived at their destinations in very different ways.

We’re being bombarded with talk about the staggering number of too many men penalties in the first round of the 2010 NHL playoffs, and some are starting to question the merit of the rule. We’re closing in on two dozen called – about one in every two games. People are asking if this penalty really impacts the flow of the game or should the refs just put their whistles in their pockets and let the boys play?

A goalie can definitely steal a series, but can a goalie steal a Stanley Cup? That’s the question being asked about Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. Facing the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2010 NHL Playoffs, Buffalo will be putting a lot of weight on their Olympic goaltender in their first playoff appearance in three years. But Miller isn’t looking at the past. His full attention is on the series against Boston, and he looked pretty good in his first game.

Edmonton finally finds reason to celebrate

TSN, Canada’s all-sports television network aired yesterday’s NHL Draft Lottery. The first 14 picks were ordered for the draft to take place on June 25 and 26, while the remaining 16 selections will be determined by the playoffs. After the climatic moment where the No. 1 picking team was revealed to be the Oilers, the program cut to a shot of Edmontonians celebrating in a bar. Did anybody tell these guys they finished in a convincing last place in all of hockey?

The housecleaning has begun. The Tampa Bay Lightning have let go of coach Rick Tocchet and General Manager Brian Lawton and team owner Jeff Vinik has begun the search for replacements. The announcements were made over the weekend as the Lightning finished another season without an entry into the playoffs. This is the third consecutive season the Lightning have failed to make the cut, despite their 80 points being the team’s highest point total since 2006-07.

When Ian White retires, he’ll be able to look back on his NHL career and say that he once led the league in at least one category. With the regular season over, White has played more games than any other NHLer. Thanks largely to a midseason trade between his former Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames, White played 83 games this year. Going the other way was Dion Phaneuf. Both defenseman are 25 years old, separated by less than two months, but that’s about all the parallels you’ll find.

With the incredible amount of shootouts in the 2009-10 season, you may be wondering who’s doing the best. That would be the Phoenix Coyotes; just another one of the unexpected bits of news to come out of Glendale, Arizona. Not only did they dominate throughout the regular season, Phoenix has a record-setting 14 shootout wins this season, and even more unexpectedly, 36-year old defenseman Adrian Aucoin has been a key part in almost half of them.

On the final day of NHL competition, it usually comes down to one thing: who will be playing who in the playoffs? That’s exactly the situation in the Western Conference as all eight playoff teams were determined earlier this week, but still, five of the eight seeds are variable. In the Eastern Conference, things are quite the opposite. The first six seeds are all determined. The last two are up for grabs between three teams in a game of NHL musical chairs.
