As we get deeper into August fantasy football becomes the number one conversation point for men between the ages of 22 and 45… or maybe just all men I know between the ages of 22 to 45. I’ll be taking an in-depth look at some of the more unique angles to the upcoming fantasy football season.
A solid, dependable young running back is gold on a fantasy football roster. This is twice as true if you are playing in a keeper league. Drafting for the future at running back often results in paying a high cost with an early round draft pick. Rookies with very high expectations traditionally seems to fall in the second or third round, and rookies with high promise will tend to be drafted in rounds 4-8. This is a large cost to pay for a player who is new to the increased level of competition as well as the system they will be playing in. However, with great risk comes the potential for great reward.
The class of 2005 turned out to be one of the more solid classes in recent memory. Granted there were surprises and disappointments and a couple of players who haven’t yet had adequate playing timeJJ. In terms of potential value this upcoming season most experts have pegged the top 5 second year backs in the following order:
- Ronnie Brown
- Cadillac Williams
- Ced Benson
- JJ Arrington
- Marion Barber
This begs the question: how valuable will Reggie Bush be this year, and next?

Hey fantasy football winners I hope you haven’t drafted your team yet—because there’s still plenty of pre-season to go before you get serious about committing to your 2006 roster. To help you with your draft day the football intelligentsia produces a bewildering array of magazines to choose from – but which is right for you? This series of articles is intended to help.
We’ve included a summary of the magazine’s content, speculation on it’s intended audience and even counted the number of sexy ads in each one (in case that’s a factor in your decision – one way or another.) Ultimately I hope that the guide you choose is the right one for you. Today we take a look at Fantasy Football Weekly 2006 Annual Guide.
Magazine Review: Grogan’s Fantasy Football Analyst

Alright football fanatics, we know you all have your office fantasy games ready to go, and you are checking stats like made hoping to walk away with the all-so-coveted parking spot that the winner walks away with. There are a bunch of magazine out there that aim to help you decide what you should do with your fantasy teams. Rather than have you go out and buy them all, hoping to walk away with victory, End Score reader Ben VanWinkle decided he would buy them, read them, and tell us what he liked - and didn’t like - about the publication. First up - Athlon Sports Grogan’s Fantasy Football Analyst.
It’s Fantasy Football draft time again and players everywhere are scrambling for the advice that will give them the edge in their league. Consumers have dozens of magazines to choose from – but which is the best? And more importantly which publication is right for your particular needs?
This series of article reviews several magazines on store shelves right now to help you decide. I’ll dissect each and describe its contents and unique features and advise on the kind of reader who might benefit most from it. I’ll let you know my impression of it – do I think it’s worth buying? Next January I’ll take another look at each and let you know how accurate they were in their forecasting.
Just in case it’s a factor in your decision to buy I’ve counted up the number of ads featuring scantily clad women and included that information in the header section of each review. Maybe that’s something you want to avoid—or maybe it’s a feature for you – either way the information is here.

Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith did not practice today, a day after straining his left hamstring running a route during training camp. This is not good news for the Panthers and their offense as Smith was a huge part of it in 2005 when he had 103 receptions for 1,563 receiving yards, and 12 TDs. After not having much of a supporting cast in the WR corp - Ricky Proehl and Kerry Colbert tied for second on the team in receptions with a very low 25 catches each - the Panthers signed Keyshawn Johnson during the offseason. Hamstring injuries are tricky as they can feel fine in a day or hamper you for the next few months. It remains to be seen how affected Smith’s left hammy is, but if Smith has to sit out camp, the team could have a serious problem on the offensive side. You can’t replace a Steve Smith.
After a “short” two-day holdout, RB Reggie Bush is now an official member of the New Orleans Saints. The deal is for six years, but the financial compensation was not officially announced, although it’s rumored to be in the $55 million to $60 million range with a guarantee of about $26.3 million.
Bush and the Saints can only benefit from only a two-day holdout, as opposed to a long holdout and even rumored possibility that Bush sit out the whole season and re-enter the draft in 2007. With a new coaching staff, Bush needed to be in camp in order to maximize his performance this coming season.

Jay Cutler Signs With The Denver Broncos
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Editorial, News, NFL,
Jay Cutler, the 11th overall NFL Draft pick, signed a six year deal with the Denver Broncos that could be worth up to $48 million. Cutler was considered a talent before the 2005 NCAA season, but not anywhere near being an early first round pick. Despite an average season at Vanderbilt, Cutler’s name was making some real momentum after an impressive performance at the Senior Bowl and workouts at the NFL Combine where Cutler simply wowed scouts and coaches. With starting QB Jake Plummer on the decline, despite a resurgence (see: not throwing as many interceptions) in Denver in recent seasons, Cutler is an excellent understudy to eventually take the starting job for the Broncos. Cutler won’t be the second coming of John Elway, but he has more upside than Jake Plummer ever had. Look for Cutler to begin starting in Denver in 2007.
Vince Young Signs With The Tennessee Titans
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Editorial, News, NFL,
Vince Young, taken third overall by the Tennessee Titans in this year’s NFL Draft, signed a five year deal with a sixth year option for up to $58 million dependent on various incentives and bonuses. The contract carries $25.7 million in guaranteed money. The deal actually exceeds the contract of number one overall pick, DE Mario Williams of the Houston Texans in terms of overall monetary value. With all the hullabaloo about Texans’ fans wanting their hometown boy, Young, to be drafted only to get passed over by Williams, this is a bit of sweet revenge for Young in that he will potentially make more money than the number one overall pick.

A Hack Job: The “Big Things” in Sports

As sports fans, we love and want to witness feats of athletic, methodical, and powerful achievement. The grace of Barry Sanders stopping on a dime, running back five yards, then going forward 80 yards while evading all 11 defensive players for a score was soemthing you felt lucky to see, mouth agape, drool making a half necklace around your neck. The devastating display of homerun power in 1998 as Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa chase of Roger Maris and his single season home run record and the way they chased each other had even your grandmother paying attention to the home run race. And, how about Tiger Wood’s assassin-like taking of the PGA at the turn of the century, and most recently this past weekend at the British Open.
Face it, folks, we want to know and be blessed with witnessing, to steal from LeBron James and Nike, the “big things” in sports. And, I’m here to help you all figure out what those things are.

Marshall Faulk Out For Season… Out For Good?
Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Editorial, News, NFL,
St. Louis Rams RB Marshall Faulk will be having major reconstructive knee surgery, effectively ending his season before it’s even started. However, it could be possible that this will swing the pedulum towards retirement, which Faulk was considering during the offseason.

Yesterday was the first day of Summer. Two days ago the NBA Season came to an end with the Miami Heat’s first title, ending a flat out fantastic NBA Playoffs. Three days ago the NHL Season came to an end as the Carolina Hurricanes won their first Stanley Cup title behind the heroics of a rookie goalie.
So, as the seasons and sports officially transition, what are sports geeks to look forward to during the summer of 2006? Here is my Top 11{ref1} list for what to expect during upcoming 3 months.
11. MLB All Star Game and Home Run Derby: There is usually at least one memorable moment from the All Star Game and Home Run Derby. In Pittsburgh this year.
10. MLB record watch: Can Barry Bonds catch the Babe? Will Ichiro break more records. Someone will set a record, surely.
9. Wimbledon: I don’t even know who the tennis stars are these days, but I’m looking forward to the traditional 6:00 am breakfast for Wimbledon.
8. NFL Kickoff Weekend: The return of professional football will signal the next season change.
7. Return of NCAA Football and the Longhorns defending their first title in years: We’ll find out a lot about this team on September 9th when they host Ohio State.
6. The British Open: Can Phil make up for his debacle at the US Open?
5. The NBA Draft: Who will draft the Stache? Who will draft the next Sam Bowie?
4. Fantasy Football Season: Ah, the best time of the year. Productivity goes down and trash talking goes up. Everyone thinks that they can be the next best Billy Beanesque type General Manager.
3. World Cup Quarterfinals: The action really heats up and the top teams have to be on their game to move on.
2. World Cup Semifinals: Can the United States advance further than they ever have before? They have yet to reach the final 4, this might be the year.
1. World Cup Finals: Seriously, it doesn’t even matter who is playing. This is the number one event of all of 2006.
It’s gonna be a hot summer, enjoy!
