We know that all this talk of the iPhone 3G has you chomping at the bit to see it in action yourself. Apple‘s Worldwide Developer Conference starts on Monday. We already knew what the rumors are. 3G iPhone. OS X Snow Leopard. App Store. iPhone 2.0 firmware. Redesigned iMacs/MacBook Pros. Mac nano. Mobile Me service. Steve Jobs announced as Obama’s running mate. Anything we missed?
Anyhow, one thing we can be certain of is that Apple is focusing on the operating system. As evidenced by the spy shot above, OS X Leopard and OS X iPhone should be getting some premium attention. Makes sense, being that this is a developers conference and all. We have one more spy shot for you after the jump.

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard debuting at WWDC?

So, word on the street now is that Apple will be unveiling Mac OS X 10.5.6
10.6 in a mere five days at WWDC. Based on the fact that Steve Jobs said that they wanted to get back on track to releasing just about yearly, I started asking people if they thought the successor to Leopard would show up next week, and they all scoffed as if I were some sort of lunatic. Well, now with the reports that TUAW and Ars have receive, it appears that my hunch was correct. Oh, and what will the successor be named? We all know Apple likes to stick with the cats for OS X, and it appears that this time it is going to be “Snow Leopard.” You see, this release is all about tightening up speed, stability, and security - not so much about dazzling new features like Time Machine. See? They want to take Leopard, and make it white as snow. That’s almost as cute as an iPod nano…
We look to Monday to see what Steve brings us.

John LeSieur Zac Browser for Autistic Kids

John LeSieur’s grandson has autism and couldn’t get into computers. Because the man works in software and couldn’t find something already available, he created the Zac Browser, named for the boy. The browser consists of hand-picked free websites such as those with educational games, music, videos, and such images as a virtual aquarium. Extraneous keyboard buttons that would be confusing have been disabled. Not only was it welcomed by Zac, John is offering his program free of charge to other parents of autistic children. OS X Leopard 10.5.3 update released

Apple has just released the latest batch of stability, compatibility, and security updates for OS X Leopard, all wrapped up in the 10.5.3 update. On my Mac Pro, the update is clocking in at 420 MB, so it’s a hefty one. That is understandable though, because there are quite a few fixes in this one. Some that stand out to us include things like improved Time Capsule reliability, screen sharing fixes, and a few Spaces improvements. We’ve got the full list for you after the break, if you are interested. Otherwise, fire up Software Update to get the latest and greatest.

Early Windows 7 screenshots

So, word on the street is that part of the first day of the All Things D conference tonight will be the unveiling of the first time of the Windows 7 operating system by Microsoft. To be clear, we shouldn’t expect Windows 7 any sooner than 2010. That said, what is shown is very much a work in progress. If you can’t wait for the video footage, which we are sure is soon to come, we also have a bunch of Windows 7 screenshots in our gallery.
We see a lot of concepts in these images. An expanded bar at the bottom of the screen, an OS X-like dock, some sort of disc-based nav system that reminds of the OLPC OS, etc. Still, nice to see that things are progressing.

JVC Everio GZ-MS100 Camcorder

Last year we introduced you to the JVC Everio GZ-HD7 Camcorder, now say hello to JVC’s entry into the Flipvideo category. The GZ-MS100 is their first SD-based standard budget cam with one-button upload to YouTube via included Cyberlink software. It can support MPEGs, 2 channel Dolby Digital and JPEG stills. The horizontal device has a Konica Minolta Lens, a 35X optical zoom, Laser Touch Operation, and a 680,000K CMOS sensor. Due out in June, the GZ-MS100 carries a MSRP of $349.00.

Schmap has come out with a new beta service for iPhones and iPod touches similar to Google mapping. When you hold your device vertically, it features places of interest on a scrollable list which is updated dynamically. Rotate to landscape and it shows them on a map. Tap a name from the list or one of the icons to get more information such as location and phone number with pics. Touch previous or next and you get your choice of other places in the area. Contact Schmap on your iPhone to try out their service.

Pixelmator updates to 1.2, adds bunch of features

Here at Gear Live, we are big fans of Pixelmator. In case you haven’t heard of it, Pixelmator is an image editor for OS X that takes advantage of a bunch of different OS X features in a way that few apps do. We love it because, while not as powerful os Photoshop, it has just about every feature the average person needs in their image editing/manipulation app, at a price that is far, far easier to swallow at just $59. Oh, and it does support PSD files, and is the world’s first image editor powered by your graphics card. Anyway, they’re calling this one “Pixelmator 1.2 Draftsman,” and there are a bunch of new features that we look forward to getting our hands on. Parallels Desktop for Mac update adds complete Vista SP1, XP SP3 support

For those of you who religiously use Parallels for the WIndows virtualization needs in OS X, you should be aware that there was a new update released today that has the appearance of being fairly important. After all, it now completely supports Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista SP1, including full Boot Camp support in both. In addition, MacBook Air compatibility has been greatly improved, too. Of course, there are your other generic bug fixes and and performance enhancements as with any new release. Anyhow, definitely a recommended upgrade.
