Golden Globe statues

For the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards, NBC recruited funnyman to host the ceremony for the second year in a row. But will Gervais be the only name making a return appearance at the microphone tonight?

Last year, Michael C. Hall, Alec Baldwin, Julianna Margulies and Toni Collette nabbed acting wins in the Television category. Could we see repeat victories for all four nominees?

At the 2010 event, Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) bested Colin Firth (A Single Man) for Best Actor in a Drama. Will this be the year that Colin Firth (The King's Speech) takes the statue from Bridges (True Grit)?

2011 Golden Globe Nominations (TV)

Boardwalk Empire

The Golden Globe contenders for the 2010-11 season were officially announced Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills by Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel and Blair Underwood.

Last year's Best Comedy Series winner, Glee, lead all television programs with a total of five nominations. Five series -- 30 Rock, Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, The Good Wife and Mad Men -- tied for second place with three nods each.

Here are some of the notable omissions/inclusions from this year's list of nominees:

  • The Good Wife was the only non-cable series to be recognized for Best Drama.
  • The Walking Dead replaced that other horror series (True Blood), giving AMC two nominations in the Drama category.
  • The limitations of the Best Supporting Actor category meant only two acting noms for the cast of Modern Family.
  • Jennifer Love Hewitt has found herself pitted against Claire Danes ... and Dame Judi Dench.

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards -- hosted again by Ricky Gervais -- will air Jan. 16 on NBC.

Ricky Gervais Returns as Golden Globes Host

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Award Shows, Prime Time, Specials, NBC,

Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes will be returning to host the Golden Globes for the second year in a row next January.

The British comedian - who received mixed reviews for his performance earlier this year - has vowed to do his best to upset the producers.

“I suppose it is flattering, to be honest, and it was a surprise. I had so much fun last year,” he joked. “I’m going to go out all this time. I’m going to make sure they’re never going to invite me back. I can’t believe they invited me back after awful things I said. Let’s see how far I can take it this time.”

Audience members winced at last year’s awards when The Office creator joked about Mel Gibson’s previous alcohol problems and Sir Paul McCartney’s expensive divorce from Heather Mills.

However, President of the Golden Globes Philip Berk says he is delighted to see him return. “We are thrilled to have Ricky back as the host of the . His combination of wit, irreverence and spontaneity makes him the ideal host. He was fantastic last year, and he’ll be even better the second time around,” he said.

Next season’s broadcast will take place on January 16 on NBC.

Ricky Gervais Toasts the Golden Globes

Ricky GervaisRicky Gervais, the host of this weekend’s , doubts he’ll be asked back again. Therefore, he’ll enjoy the experience while he can.

“I’m going to be drunk. Everyone else is. They’re not going to invite me back, so I might as well have fun,” Gervais claimed. “They can’t censor me, it’s live. That’s the beauty of it. When they first offered me the job, I said, ‘I’m not going to rehearse. Can I say what I want?’ They said, ‘Yes.’ They haven’t seen the script, my ideas, so they can’t censor me. I suppose they could stop the show and replace me.”

Despite the lack of planned jokes, the comedian reveals he will be picking on t (again). “Oh yeah, he’s definitely in for it. Obviously, that’s a staple,” Ricky told Access Hollywood. “Anyone who isn’t concentrating will get it, so they better listen, they better not talk. They can talk when everyone else is on, but they better not talk when I’m on, because then they get my attention and then they’re in trouble.”

Anna Paquin Underwhelmed by Award Nominations

Anna Paquin was more excited about passing her driving test than being nominated for a Golden Globe award.

The star - who is up for the Best Actress in a Television Drama honor - admits she’s thrilled to be acknowledged for her work but is happier that she now has the freedom to drive herself about.

“I’m oddly more excited about the driver’s license. I’m totally the two-handed driver, and I’m not very good at parallel parking,” she said.

The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards take place on Sunday, but Anna admits she doesn’t get too excited about attending glittering ceremonies. Paquin - who won the same award year and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar at age 11 - said: “It’s probably not any different than any other day.”

One year after a strike-induced absence, the drinking resumed. Although the drew its usual set of followers tonight, this year’s program carried even more significance than usual. The reason? Heath Ledger.

Would either Meryl Streep (Mamma Mia, Doubt) or Kate Winslet (Revolutionary Road, The Reader) walk away with two awards? Could ‘s comeback performance in The Wrestler earn him a surprise win over Sean Penn (Milk)?
