‘House’ Helps FOX Secure Tuesday Ratings Win

Last night saw the introduction of ABC’s new comedies (Cavemen, Carpoolers) and a shrunken Dancing With The Stars results show. In the end, FOX took the evening followed by ABC, CBS, NBC and CW.
8pm
- The Biggest Loser (7.4 million viewers, 3.3/8 in 18-49 demo) showed an improvement from last week, though it didn’t have DWTS to contend with.
- Cavemen (3.3/10) and Carpoolers (3.4/9) both debuted with 9 million viewers.
- At 15.5 million, NCIS (3.3/10) won the viewership battle, but tied with Cavemen in the important demo.
9pm
- House (17.3 million viewers, 7.1 rating/17) grew upon its numbers from last year
- A shortened Dancing with the Stars (4.3/10) took in 15.7 million viewers.
- Critical fave Reaper (2.8 million, 1.3/3) drew more viewers than its Beauty & the Geek (2.6 million, 1.3/4) lead-in.
10pm
- Law & Order: SVU (11.7 million, 4.5/12) took the win despite being down from last week.
- Emmy-award winner James Spader and Boston Legal (3.1/8) attracted 10.9 million viewers.
- Cane (9.2 million, 2.5/7) saw smaller numbers than last year’s quickly-canceled Smith.

The 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast. Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)? Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)? Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now). Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien. This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama. This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).
I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight. We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Fall 2007 TV Programming Schedule

ABC Renews 14 Series for 2007/2008

OK, TV fans… take a gander at these pick-ups for the 2007-2008 season on ABC. There are certain to be some of your faves being renewed. I’m thrilled to see Brothers & Sisters and Ugly Betty make the cut. For the most part, no huge surprises:

- Dancing with the Stars

- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
- Grey’s Anatomy
- Jimmy Kimmel Live

America’s Funniest Home Videos, Supernanny and Wife Swap previously got the greenlight for next season. ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson commented, “These shows provide us with a substantial foundation to make 07-08 our best schedule yet.”

Megan Mullally Back on the Small Screen

Never fear, Megan Mullally fans—she’s coming back to the small screen! Don’t worry, her short lived talk show didn’t get renewed, but she will be making a guest appearance on Boston Legal. She’s only scheduled to appear on one episode, but this should give fans enough to hold them over until her next acting gig. She will appear later this season as an ex-girlfriend and former co-worker of Alan Shore (James Spader). No word yet on when it will air, but it’s certain that the dynamic between her, Shatner and Spader will be fantastic. And get this, ABC says that her character, Renata Hall, will make a grand entrance, “as she dashes down the courthouse hallway wearing a bloody wedding gown, carrying a bloody pair of scissors and proclaiming her innocence in the murder of her betrothed.” Classy. Mullally, of course is famous for playing Karen Walker on Will & Grace, for which she won two Emmys. She was also nominated five other times.
