Tino Martinez on Baseball TonightToday is opening day, so Tino might just be rusty getting in front of the camera after a couple months off, but today he sure seems off.  With Karl Ravech, John Kruk and Harold Reynolds going over their picks to win the NL East, Tino went off on a long tangent critiquing the entire NL East.  I can just imaging the producers just going nuts trying to get Ravech’s attention to cut him off saying “We have five more divisions to cover, shut him up!”  Good luck to Tino on the next telecast.  Ravech also seems to be slightly more smug than in years past, maybe we need a Peter Gammons appearance to steal his thunder.

Kris and Anna Benson, on the FHM picutre shoot After seeing more and more media exposure to Anna Benson recently, people shouldn’t be shocked to see this happen despite being married for seven years.  Anna Benson seems poised to be become a huge celebrity and to come out of Kris’ shadow, if she hasn’t done so already.  The timing of this seems to be interesting considering her recent cover shoot on FHM magazine.  In the featured article, Anna interviews Kris and asks him where does he see the two of them in the future.  He replies by saying “probably divorced.”  It is not out of the realm of possibilities that the New York Mets traded Kris Benson because they did not want to deal with the media circus this year while they compete for the playoffs.  Anna Benson was very outspoken when the trade occurred and probably wanted to cash in the numerous opportunities that would have occurred by being in New York.  It looks like she will get her way because she could probably grab headlines wherever she is.

Major League Baseball Sneakers by ReebokWow, I thought this was a pretty cool product that Reebok decided to cash in with.  Now fans can show their team pride on their feet, I’m just surprised this hasn’t been though of earlier.  Forget the traditional baseball cap or team jersey, your shoes will tell the story.  Especially good for the socially inept fans, where now your shoes can start a conversation with the girl you have been too nervous to talk to, an instant ice-breaker.  Or cool kids can have street cred by wearing a St. Louis Cardinal shoe not because they like baseball but because it’s the home-town of rap star Nelly.

Wily Mo PenaBronson ArroyoWith pitcher David Wells blabbing his mouth off non-stop about not pitching until late April when the season starts because of the Red Sox deep pitching staff, maybe he will now get his wish.  The Red Sox will receive outfielder Willy Mo Pena, who is 24 and will most likely replace Trot Nixon as he declines because of age and injury.  Willy Mo Pena just came back from the World Baseball Classic on the Dominican Republic team.  Arroyo had just signed an extension in the off-season, a three-year contract worth $11.25 million.

Japan Vs Cuba in World Baseball Classic finals Cuba defeated the Major League star-studded lineup Dominican Republic team, and Japan finally defeated Korea after losing in their first two attempts.  Team Korea had a familiar goat in Byung-Hyun Kim, who gave up a home run in a scoreless tie.  Kim is best known for blowing saves in the 2001 World Series for the Arizona Diamondbacks versus the New York Yankees.  With Cuba defeating the strong Dominican team, the MLB must be drooling for more Cuban defectors such as Livan and Orlando Hernandez.  The finals will be played on Monday 9 P.M. in San Diego’s Petco Park.

Team USA loses to Mexico It’s back to Spring Training for the American players.  Team USA was unable to defeat Mexico last night, and therefore, was eliminated in round two of the World Baseball Classic.  In perhaps Roger Clemens’ last game, the Rocket pitched well, despite taking the 2-1 loss.  The major Achilles was that the Team USA bats were nowhere to be found.  Team USA have only a tainted win over Japan to show for their round 2 performance, and certainly did not deserve to advance.  There are four teams left standing in the WBC whom will face each other in single elimination games on Saturday and the championship game will follow on Monday March 20th.  The semi-final games are the Dominican Republic versus Cuba and Korea facing off against Japan once again, a team they have defeated twice already.

World Baseball Classic logoIt was great for me to see Ken Griffey Jr. back in the groove, launching home runs versus the South African team.  Griffey has reeled off six straight hits in his last six at-bats.  The pool now for Team USA will be facing off against Japan, Korea and Mexico.  Baseball in Japan is much improved since the days of Mr. Baseball (starring a washed up Tom Selleck.)  Japan’s “Evil Empire” has Seattle Mariner superstar Ichiro Suzuki and is managed by Sadaharu Oh, who owns the all-time pro baseball record with 868 home runs.

Barry Bonds doped up, now his legacy is in jeopardy As if Bonds dressing up as Paula Abdoul wasn’t frightening in and of itself,  SI is reporting that Barry Bonds has definitely used steroids, and now his legacy is in jeopardy.  Currently people are mentioning him in the same breath as Pete Rose, in terms of also banning him for the Hall of Fame.  Well, if the people who cast a vote as serious about this issue, they better make sure they exclude all the other sluggers out of the HOF and not just single out Barry Bonds.  That means Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Jason Giambi, or whomever you have a doubt about whether they cheated or not.  In some aspects, fans and media drove players to cheat, with the glorification of the home run.  Do you remember that TV commercial: Chicks dig the long-ball?  The constant media watch on the single season home run record, the escalating salaries for the premiere sluggers have been contributing factors to the increasing steroid problem.

Kirby Puckett dies yesterday at the age of 45It is a sad day in the baseball world as reports have confirmed Kirby Puckett passed away yesterday after suffering a stroke.  Puckett was in his Phoenix, Arizona home when the stroke occurred.  Kirby had seemed to lose control of his health after his playing days, particularly with weight gain.  Puckett, who was divorced, is survived by two children and his fiance.  He will forever be remembered as the hero of Game 6 in the 1991 World Series against the Atlanta Braves as a member of the Minnesota Twins.  The Hall of Famer, won two world championships playing for the Twins, the other title coming in 1987 versus the St. Louis Cardinals.

Alfonso Soriano pic from espnSoriano is off to play second base in the World Baseball Classic and does not want to come back to play the outfield.  When the World Baseball Classic ends in three weeks, Soriano is hoping the Washington Nationals have accommodated for him, or else.  Well what exactly is “what else”?  Whose to say for sure, does it mean, trade 2B Jose Vidro?  Move Vidro to the outfield?  Or trade Soriano to another team?  Well Nationals General Manager Jim Bowden sure doesn’t have the answer.  Bowden states: “We’ve been pretty clear about being unclear,”.  Wow, kudos to you Bowden, you sound almost as convincing as Isiah Thomas, promising Knick fans that Marbury/Francis will work itself out just as well as Isiah Thomas/ Joe Dumars or Walt Fraizer/Earl Munroe.
