Sean MayThe Charlotte Bobcats are looking very thin at the power forward position these days with May joining last years Rookie of the Year Emeka Okafor on the disabled list.  Not a good sign for the franchise when their two lottery choice big men may have their careers curtailed due to injuries.  Okafor has been suffering from an ankle sprain and May is having knee problems.  The Bobcats look to end a five game losing streak tonight versus Orlando.

Tim ThomasI call this the curse of the fugazy.  With the Knicks taking on the Bulls tonight, it has reminded me of the Eddy Curry for Michael Sweetney, Tim Thomas trade.  Tim Thomas has been inactive for the entire season with the exception of three games.  This was a player at one time was a lottery pick, an important piece for the Milwaukee Bucks during the Big Three days of Cassell, Allen and Glenn Robinson.  Ever since Tim Thomas called out Kenyon Martin, then of the New Jersey Nets, a fugazy in the ‘04 playoffs it has been all downhill for Thomas.  In fugazy, he meant fake or not authentic, as in a fake thug.  Taking liberties with the fictional word from the movie Donnie Brasco caused him to lose all creditability with the English language and with fans that have a brain.  Well in the aftermath, Martin and the Nets swept the Knicks out of the playoffs; the ‘05 season was terrible, reminding Knicks fans of Charles Smith, and now riding the pine with his NBA future in jeopardy.

Goose GossageGoose Gossage made some comments earlier this week while upset when finding out he didn’t make the cut for the Hall of Fame - again.  The deserving candidate made some interesting, thought-provoking statements - particularly this one regarding home run hitter Barry Bonds:

“Hitting in a game is no different than hitting in a home run contest. It pisses me off to say Barry Bonds is the greatest hitter. He’s playing in a wussy era. The game is soft. You never get thrown at today. Last thing a hitter has to worry about today is getting hit. The first thing Hank Aaron had to worry about is: Am I going to survive this at-bat because I’m black.”

Joey PorterPittsburgh Steelers linebacker, Joey Porter, made headlines both before and after the Divisional round playoff game versus the Indianapolis Colts.  Before the game, he was criticizing the Colts for playing with a lot of trickery on offense, some of the tactics which are questionable as far as sportsmanship goes.  After the game, he accused the referees of playing favorites to the Colts,  in which his gripes might have some validity.  I am looking forward to what Porter has to say regarding his next opponent the Denver Broncos for the AFC Championship.  Stay tuned for Sunday 3 PM for that showdown.

Kevin MillarAnother fan favorite of the 2004 World Series Champion Red Sox team will be wearing another uniform next season.  Millar signs a 1 year deal, and will replace Rafael Palmerio, who Baltimore is trying to distance themselves from.  This deal is still pending a physical examination.  Boston is going to with J.T. Snow at first base, formerly of the San Francisco Giants, he brings a much better glove to first, and is a left handed bat, while Millar hits right handed.  The San Francisco Giants are going to use a Mark Sweeney/Lance Niekro platoon at first base; they also are eagerly awaiting Barry Bonds’ return this season, and want to show off their new #2 pitcher in the rotation, free agent signing Matt Morris.

Jeff Bagwell Jeff Bagwell is coming off an injury plagued 2005 season, and will be 38 years old this coming season.  At first glance, you may think this is a selfish move by the Astros management - it’s not.  Let’s not feel too sorry for Bagwell, who couldn’t lead his Astros to the World Series during his prime, getting ousted by the Braves 3 times and by the Padres in ‘98 in the division round.  The Astros finally got past the Braves for the first time two years ago in 2004, mostly in part by Carlos Beltran’s heroics.  Bagwell has earned an excess of $108,765,000 in salary throughout his career for the Astros, so he has been compensated extremely well for his services.

The Astros found out last year in the playoffs that they need an extra bat or two in their lineup to go all the way, having insurance company pick up the majority of Bagwells $17 million he will be owed in the ‘06 season would be a good place to start and free up some money to pursue a young big time hitter.  Fans do not need to point out that Bagwell has been loyal to the team, and now the Astros aren’t showing any loyalty in return, this is a business, and the $108 million should suffice.

Shaun Alexander MCP

The Seattle Seahawks were crying foul of no respect all season long.  Now they’ll have at least some of the recognition they were looking for.  The beginning of this season started off with Alexander in a contract dispute with Seahawk management over a long term extension deal.  They ended up agreeing to a one-year franchise offer, meaning the average salary of the top 5 peers in the same position.  It looks Seattle made a good return on their investment.

Alexander led the Seahawks to the NFC’s best record and home-field advantage until the Super Bowl.  Sometimes, bickering with management during the season over a contract could easily distract the player and the rest of the team, but Alexander didn’t make any noise and just let his play speak for itself.

Damon Stoudamire Guard Damon Stoudamire of the Memphis Grizzlies suffered a torn tendon in his knee last night in Portland.  He and new backcourt-mate Eddies Jones, have been leading the Grizzlies to another playoff bound season.  This will be a big blow to the team, as Stoudamire was already named team co-captain along with Jones in just their first year on the team.  They will now rely on their other point guard Bobby Jackson, who has been injury prone.  They may take a look at a familiar face in Earl Watson, who has not seen many minutes in Denver behind Andre Miller and Earl Boykins in the depth chart.

Happy Birthday LebronJust 21 years ago, an NBA Legend-to-be was born.  To grace us with many a thunderous dunks, to soar to the beyond and contest Micheal Jordan’s greatness.  More importantly than all of this: the limos, the women, and all the money in the world graces one of the most beloved 21 year olds in the nation.  A genuine Happy Birthday Lebron, basketball plans on never being the same without you.  Oh, and stop asking Carmelo “how to score” just becuase he’s older.  Keep your concentration on the Pistons tomorrow.

Kobe Bryant
Kobe Bryant will miss 2 games for the elbow shot he gave Mike Miller of the Grizzlies during Wednesday night’s game. Bryant took an accidental shot from Miller earlier in the game. The Lakers sure need an enforcer on team to make sure stuff like that doesn’t happen to its star player, someone to play the Charles Oakley, Dale Davis type role. Thanks for nothing, Kwame Brown, Andrew Bynum. I thought high school kids were supposed to stick up for each other.
