Square Starbucks

We've gotta hand it to Square. The mobile payments company has just signed on its biggest partner to date--Starbucks. Yep, with the new deal, customers will be able to pay for their orders with the Pay with Square app in the US, which means they won't even need to bust out a card or cash. Square will also be processing all Starbucks credit and debit transactions. In addition to Square being accepted at Starbucks locations, the deal also sees Starbucks investing some $25 million as part of Square's current financing round. Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz has even joined the Square board of directors. Yeah, this is a big deal. Other Square partners include FedEx, Staples, and Walgreens.

So, when will you be able to start paying with Square at Starbucks? The company will launch the functionality this fall across 7,000 US locations.

Bleeding Edge TV 349: Square credit card reader fails to impress

Ever since we heard the news of Square and how they were aiming to change the face of credit card processing and transactions, we’d been excited to try it out. Square wants to give everyone the ability to accept credit cards as payment, making it simple to do with your mobile smartphone device. We had a few friends over to watch UFC 114, and since we all decided we would split the cost of the event, it seemed like as good a time as any to bust out the Square card reader and give it a try for the first time. We captured it all on video, and as you will see, using the Square reader and app was anything but simple. We are gonna chalk this one up to being a defective unit, although multiple customer service requests to Square have gone unanswered. We will let you know what happens if we ever get a replacement card reader dongle. In the meantime, enjoy the mayhem!

Square mobile payments app now available on iPad, iPhone, Android

We can’t say enough about the love we have for what the folks over at Square are doing. In a nutshell, they are bringing credit card processing to the masses by way of connected smartphones (like and devices) and s as well. You download the free app and sign up, and they send you a free credit card reader that hooks into the audio jack on your device. From there, whether you are a big business, small coffee shop, a seller at the flea market, or just wanna collect half the check from your friend after dining out, you can can accept a credit card payment right on your phone. The video above explains it way better than we can, but the news here is that Square is now available for iPhone and iPad, as well as Android.

SquareUp Receipt

New iPhone credit card payment service SquareUp has finally been unveiled, and we’ve gotta say, it’s got our attention. The brainchild of Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, SquareUp aims to be a simple, sleek, inexpensive, and charitable credit card payment processing service. It works on the and , in conjunction with a credit card reader that plugs in to the audio jack. You get payer verification, receipts that can be sent via email or text message, and receipt signing using your finger. Even cooler, in our opinion, is that Square will donate one penny of every transaction to a charity of the seller’s choice.

If Square plays their cards right, they will be a force to reckon with in the small business arena. The service is in limited beta right now, but Square says it’ll be fully open in 2010. We’ll see if we can’t get a beta account to give you a better look at how it all works.
