The Worst American Idol Season Ever?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
It became such a phenomenon. It made all the other networks jealous. It locked up the number 1 ratings spot for so long. It re-launched the careers of some has-beens, and started brand-new careers for some that might never-have-been otherwise. Eventually, it all had to go to hell…right? This year’s season of American Idol is leaving a lot of fans wanting. Bad singing makes for exciting reality TV watching but painful reality listening, and many fans are left confused at the end of each Idol results show. Last night’s elimination of Gina Glockson seems to prove that singing isn’t what makes an American Idol. The only thing more painful than Gina’s teary good-bye (as she sadly sang her song of hope, encouraging all to smile though her heart was breaking) was the quick filler performance used to cover Tony Bennett’s absence from the stage. So many ears were bleeding, many were unable to hear Gina’s later singing. America gets to vote for who they like – but it’s the judges that decide who’s going to be around when voting commences. With so many poor singers now filling the stage, some fans are calling season 6 the worst ever in Idol history. As these less-talented singers stick in season 6 longer than those with more powerful pipes, one question keeps coming up: WHY? Maybe the truth is, America doesn’t want good singing. They want good TV. And watching performers fall flat…well, that’s better than a high-speed chase.

Rachael Ray Throws a Prom
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Talk Shows, Syndication,
OK, there’s no disputing that Rachael Ray is a do-gooder. And in this case, she helped a high school where eight students and the school were lost in a tornado on March 1st. Not only did she plan the meal and help prepare it, but she also paid for the prom for Enterprise High School in Alabama. She filmed the whole thing and will air it on the April 30th episode of her talk show. “The students of Enterprise High are so courageous, given all that they’ve gone through,” said Ray. “When I heard about what happened to their school and classmates, we wanted to help.” And that’s not all—Mandy Moore showed up to sing three songs at the end of the shindig. The memory of their fallen classmates was not forgotten, as they displayed pictures of the students and honored them. Still, students found it hard to celebrate, with one senior commenting, “It makes it a little harder for me. I’m used to all of them being around.”

Erika Christensen, David Cross Join ‘Hell’
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, CBS, Arrested Development,
At first glance, I wasn’t too excited about CBS’ new comedy I’m in Hell. Sure, Jason Biggs (of American Pie fame) stars as a Wall Street dude who dies and has to live out Hell on Earth… but it really didn’t grab me. The latest news of Erika Christensen and David Cross joining the series may make it worth a look, however. OK, so I’m really just talking about David Cross here. Since Arrested Development left, I’ve been missing the old AD gang and love to see them pop up here and there (case in point, a guest appearance by Will Arnett on tonight’s 30 Rock). I’m a huge fan of Cross’ from his quirky stand-up and of course, Mr. Show with Bob and David, which was pure genius. So, any David Cross is worth a look I figure, especially when he takes on the role as the devil in I’m in Hell.

Chelsea Handler Gets a New Show
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Late Night, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
If you’re not familiar with Chelsea Handler, she had her own show on E! Entertainment Television called The Chelsea Handler Show (how appropriate). The point is, she is really funny and obnoxious and I always enjoy seeing her pop up on one of those E! 101 Celebrity XYZ shows. So it seems her previous show did pretty well, because E! is exploring new territory with her in an hour-long late-night show called Chelsea Lately beginning in July. She’ll look at hot topics, have guests, viewers calling in and more. You may have also caught her on Oxygen’s show, Girls Behaving Badly. I imagine her new show will be similar to David Spade’s Showbiz Show, but I could be wrong. At any rate, I’ll be checking it out because a) I really like her, and b) it’ll be the middle of summer when there’s nothing else to watch!

Sanjaya: The Tic-Tac-Toe Playing Pig
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Features,
I’m starting this article before the foregone conclusion that will happen during tonight’s American Idol results show, that is: Sanjaya isn’t going anywhere. By the time you read this, you and several million other viewers will be annoyed, whoever leaves instead of Sanjaya will be angry, but do you know who’s going to be the most pissed that Sanjaya is sticking around? Four people: Randy, Paula, Simon and Ryan.
I’ve been watching Idol off and on since its inception, and there’s always been one constant (well, two if you count Paula’s “your voice is like a rainbow” comments): no matter who the contestant is, no matter how bad he or she is on the show, Ryan and Paula always supported each and every one of those kids. The Jasmine Triases, the Kevin Covaises, the John Stevenses (not the Supreme Court Justice, the pseudo-crooner), even though they stunk up the joint week after week, Ryan and Paula, the two cheeriest elves on reality tv, were always there to support the kids.
But not anymore.

CSI Rips Bald Britney From the Headlines
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, CBS,
Gotta love those CSI “ripped from the headlines” storylines. The latest will have a take on bald-headed Britney Spears. Well, kind of… one of the characters on an upcoming episode is said to be based loosely on Spears. The CSI:Miami episode will include the mystery surrounding the death of an actor killed during their stint in rehab. That’s not the Brit character—rather David Caruso and his band of merry forensic scientists will have an encounter with a bald starlet who is staying at the rehab facility. A September episode included another Brit-like star who carried her child in her lap while driving. Sound familiar? To tell if the character is really inspired by Britney though, it would require the actress to do some gum snapping and a few well placed “y’alls”.

Chris Sligh His Own Worst Enemy?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, News,
Fans were drawn right away to his wry humor, fun hairstyle, and powerful vocals. So, where did it all go wrong? Should fans blame Simon Cowell, who roundly dissed Sligh’s last performance (just before he was voted off American Idol)? Was it because every song he sang on the Idol stage was a sappy-sweet lovelorn melodrama? Or was it Chris Sligh’s attitude that proved to be the catalyst that ended his American Idol career? Motivational experts seem to think so, though Sligh maintains the elimination is “no big deal.” The singer says his goal was to make the Idol top ten in order to participate in the summer tour. Goal achieved, and then it was time for Sligh to fly. Let’s hope the former Idol contestant adopts a new, much more positive attitude when it comes to his future successes.

An Angelic Ending for 7th Heaven Fans
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, The CW, Cancellations,
After eleven seasons of warm-hearted life lessons and family drama, 7th Heaven is coming to an end. Though the show was slated for cancellation a year ago, impressive season finale ratings breathed new life into the Heavenly CW drama…just not enough life to sustain the show past one last season. But it’s going to come to an end for sure this time, so fans are getting ready to say a tearful good-bye on Monday, May 13. After eleven years and dizzying cast additions, the show remains one of the most successful to ever exist on the once-WB network. 7th Heaven also launched the career of Hollywood “it” girl Jessica Biel. Tune in to the finale for a powerful ending to the Camden family saga…there may be a surprise or two in yet in store for fans.

Sanjaya Offered KFC for Bowl Hair
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Rumors,
OK, let me start by saying that I really don’t want to add to the discussions about American Idol‘s Sanjaya Malakar and his ever-changing hairstyles. But by golly, I can’t pass this one up. KFC President Gregg Dedrick wrote Sanjaya an open letter that said, in part, “If you don a bowl hairdo during one of your next nationally televised performances, KFC will grant you a free lifetime supply of KFC Famous Bowls. We’re sure America will be as ‘bowled-over’ by your take on this classic look as they are by our KFC Famous Bowls.” Ugh. Seriously? I don’t know what’s more ridiculous—a bowl hairdo or a lifetime supply of KFC Famous Bowls. At least this KFC guy threw in something a little more significant: “If you sport a bowl cut, KFC will cut a check in your name to Colonel’s Scholars, a charity providing young people with much needed college scholarships.” It’s unlikely that Sanjaya will bite at this offer, but if we see him with a bowl cut on an upcoming performance, now you’ll know why.

30 Rock Renewed for 2007-2008 Season
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Ratings, Renewals,
I can barely hide my excitement over this piece of renewal news… 30 Rock will be back next season!! If you haven’t seen it yet, please do yourself a huge favor and check it out. If you have seen it and are a fan, then join me in a happy dance. And if you just plain don’t like 30 Rock (but how could you not?), then I’m sorry that this news will not brighten your day. While it seemed that 30 Rock would definitely get picked up, it’s nice to hear the official news anyway. OK, the ratings aren’t great, but the writing is smart and the performances are great. Alec Baldwin can do no wrong and Tina Fey is really refreshing and funny. Even NBC Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly loves it, saying, “From the beginning, 30 Rock has proven to be the kind of quality comedy that doesn’t come around very often, and we are very pleased to have this show back for a second season. We expect it to continue to build its increasingly loyal audience and become another of NBC’s classic comedy series.” Interestingly enough, NBC calls this an “upscale” show because of the concentration of viewers with six figure household incomes. Catch 30 Rock when it returns this Thursday at 8:40 for a super-sized episode.
