At the close of Tuesday night’s The Daily Show, Jon Stewart made a surprising announcement: he will soon be making an announcement.

Stewart made it clear that he “will have an announcement at some time,” which means “in the near to not-so-near future.” What he has to say may in fact be “the most important announcement in history … equivalent to 7.3 Gettysburg Addresses.”

“I don’t know what it is,” Stewart admitted. “Though I have my suspicions…and if I am right, it’s going to be huge.”

Osbournes to Return to TV

Rowdy and raucous, The Osbournes made a big splash on cable TV just six short years ago. When their reality show first filled screens in 2002, they quickly became the first family of rock n roll. If you think Ozzy, Sharon, Kelly and Jack left the small screen too quickly, FOX has something in store for you.

The network has given the green light to six episodes of a new variety-style show featuring the famous family. FOX has likened the project to - get this - The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The new Osbourne show, as yet unnamed, will give viewers an hour’s worth of entertainment in the form of comedic skits, musical numbers, audience participation and special guest stars.

The Battle of the Late Night Hosts

In an epic late night match-up, post-prime time hosts are facing off in a battle for the ages.  It’s a contest of wills that dares a meeting of cable and network TV that could rock more than one snarky show.

Well, perhaps it isn’t as big as all that - but it is mildly entertaining and it’s giving Comedy Central a little much-needed fodder in this strange world without TV writers. Like as not, even the best late night programs have been faltering. Jon Stewart is opening every episode by flicking paper footballs randomly toward his audience, and on Tuesday’s episode Stephen Colbert played with clam shells instead of monologuing. Thankfully, Colbert recently picked a fight with fellow host Conan O’Brien to keep us all amused.

Here’s the breakdown: Colbert invited Presidential contender Mike Huckabee onto The Colbert Report, thus granting him the highly coveted “Colbert bump.” Naturally, Huckabee’s popularity increased - and even he attributed this climb to Colbert. So, when Conan O’Brien claimed to be the real puppet master behind Huckabee’s success, Colbert was affronted.

Is Stephen Colbert Different?

On his Wednesday night show, Stephen Colbert told viewers that, although he is lumped together with other late night hosts, he is different. He is a newsman. This was said all very tongue-in-cheek of course, but Colbert may not be far from wrong. The Colbert Report is a little different from other variety shows, and the program’s host definitely stands out from the pack.

In his quest to find ways to fill up air time, Colbert taped three recently-aired hilarious segments in which he chronicled his quest to hang in the nation’s museum: The Smithsonian Institution. For six weeks, Colbert’s portrait (from season three, this one features four different Stephens in the picture) will hang just outside the Hall of Presidents in the National Portrait Gallery. To be specific, right under the sign for the restrooms. This is, of course, only a temporary arrangement. (An official for the museum said the Institute is going along with the joke, and the portrait will not be a permanent fixture.) Since Colbert’s announcement, several young visitors have flocked to the museum to pose with the portrait - even some who had never been to the National Portrait Gallery before.

The sheer loyalty Colbert commands sets him apart from other hosts, and the attention he receives is no laughing matter. Somehow, I can’t help but think Colbert’s portrait won’t have any trouble finding a permanent home in some prestigious locale.

The Return of Late Night TV…Sort Of

Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien will be returning to work directly after the holidays, with new episodes scheduled to air Wednesday, January 2. They’ll be bringing late night entertainment back to TV, something that’s been sorely missing since the writer’s strike started.

An NBC spokesperson said that Leno and O’Brien still support their writers, but by returning to work will give hundreds of people the chance to do their jobs. Of course, the late night variety programs will go on the air sans writers, so there’s no telling what fans will get. Currently, no guests have been announced for either program.

Meanwhile, David Letterman and his company, Worldwide Pants, are hoping to broker a deal with the WGA.  If the parties can work out an arrangement independent of the dispute with the producers, the Late Show with David Letterman and the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson could soon also be returning with writers.
