American Idol: Could Shania Twain Replace J-Lo?

TMZ’s mysterious sources are hinting that Jennifer Lopez may not be totally out of the American Idol picture—but execs have a backup plan, just in case.

According to one unnamed source, pop/country singer is also on the short list of potential Idol judges in Season 10.

Twain previously appeared on Idol in Season 9 twice, both as a guest judge and mentor to the contestants.

American Idol 9: Top 6 Results


The American Idol 9 judges had few negative comments to make Tuesday night, which set the stage for a very unpredictable elimination round on Wednesday’s results show. Thirty-three million votes were recorded following night.

Rascal Flatts kicked off the show with “Unstoppable,” performing the tune as ably as you’d expect. Classic country song, very straightforward stage show, a few hot guitar licks. The song was really, really long. Rascal Flatts is soon going out on tour with Shakira, an odd combo.

American Idol 9: Top 6 Perform


Only six remain in the competition, and there are no more saves to see them through the elimination rounds. All must go for one to stand alone, and they all must present their very best for the oh-so-important Tuesday performance rounds.

This week, the theme was , who has often bridged the gap between pop and country. She’s a multiple Grammy award winner and she’s enjoyed plenty of Number 1 hits, which makes her a good mentor choice. She advised the Idols to make her songs their own, as if they had written the tunes themselves. “I’m going to be sitting on the edge of my seat,” she predicted of the performance round.

  • 24 (FOX, 9pm):  “President Taylor enlists a private security firm led by Mark Bledsoe (D.B. Sweeney) to assist in the crisis.” She believes his experience with the “Pamchenko” could come handy in this situation.
  • Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (FOOD, 10pm):  “Guy visits a 40-year-old fish shack in Mayport, Fla., where shrimp is prepared nine different ways.” Thanks to the economy, employees aren’t the only thing Bubba Gump has had to cut back on.
  • United States of Tara (Showtime, 10:30pm):  “A tornado strikes the city and the Gregsons seek shelter in their basement, where Tara’s new alter, therapist Shoshana Schoenbaum, convenes a family meeting.” Misery always loves new company.

has landed her own reality TV show about her return to music.

The “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” singer took a break from recording after splitting from Robert “Mutt” Lange, her husband of of 14 years, but is now filming a TV show. Why Not? With Shania Twain, a program about her comeback, will air on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN channel.

A spokesperson for the channel said: “The show will follow Shania as she begins her climb back to the top, a personal journey filled with risk, revelations and unexpected adventures.”

American Idol 9: Chicago Auditions

visited the Windy City, opening this audition episode with a montage of angry, rejected contestants. It was an auspicious beginning. Shania Twain was the guest judge for this city, a development which seemed to thrill Kara DioGuardi.

The crowds who waited chanted “Yes, We Can,” in honor of Barack Obama, who called the city home until taking up residence at 1600 Pennsylvania in Washington, D.C. Viewers were quickly taken into the story of , a pretty blonde (dyed) with pretty ringlets. Her low, sultry voice quickly proved that there’s more to her than what meets the eye, and Katelyn earned praise from the judges. “I think you have a voice that could sing a hit song, I think,” Shania Twain generously told her. Epperly earned her golden ticket, and the Chicago auditions were well under way.
