Disney to Get Serious Musical Competition: How Spectacular

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Cable, Gossip,

Tammin Sursok can’t control the market on teen/tween musical movies for much longer, not if kids-based Nickelodeon has anything to say about it.

Spectacular, a new musical comedy set in high school, will begin shooting on April 21 - move over, . Newcomers Tammin Sursok, Nolan Funk, and Simon Curtis will star in the film, along with Zoey 101’s Victoria Justice. The film will focus on the school choir and one preppy, pretty female student in particular. A new rock-n-roller joins the group, however unwittingly, and soon enough musical romance is borne between them. Sounds a little familiar…but I can’t quite recall which musical movie plot this might be similar to. Hmmm.

Nick’s high school musical movie is not the classic, cookie-cutter musical film. The numbers in this flick are performance-based rather than random singing insertions. Think more Dreamgirls and less My Fair Lady. Right now, the Viacom-owned network isn’t planning on any sequels - though there are contractual options open for just such an occurrence.

‘Viva Laughlin’ Canceled; ‘The Amazing Race’ Returns

Viva Laughlin has had hits in the theaters (X-Men) and on Broadway (The Boy from Oz), but his mark on television will have to wait.  Jackman served as the executive producer of —the first significant cancellation of the fall season.

Yes, you could argue that Nashville technically earned that dubious honor, but Fox claimed the show was returning in October (yeah—I know it’s gone).  Then there was that small CW show, .  The pseudo-news program that really didn’t exist was just replaced by reruns of .  Regardless, I can safely say that Viva was the first ‘scripted’ show to go kaput.

After only one week on air (granted, there were two episodes), put the brakes on the musical drama.  Many who saw Thursday’s overnight ratings predicted this day would come—though I’m not sure they imagined it would arrive so soon.  Unfortunately, Viva’s second dismal performance last night drove the nail in its coffin.

The good news from all of this?  Fans of will get to see their beloved show return even earlier than expected.  It will now take over the vacant 8pm Sunday time slot starting November 4th (a CSI rerun will warm the spot until then).  While I feel bad for Hugh Jackman, I’d happily take over him any day of the week.

Paris Hilton to visit Rwanda

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Talent, Gossip,

Paris Hilton is sticking to her post-jail convictions…just as soon as she’s done shooting her new movie Repo! The Genetic Opera, a horror-musical. A strange combination, to be sure, but it did work for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, right?. In November (once her schedule is free), Hilton will take a trip to Rwanda. She will travel to Rwanda to raise awareness of the mounting problems taking place there, including tribal warfare and genocide. Hilton told reporters she won’t stop with Rwanda, but visit more countries where poverty and children’s issues are a big concern. She says she can do good just by getting involved and bringing attention to these issues. Hilton will also make her palatial Beverly Hills home “green friendly.” Until then, Hilton is in Toronto working on Repo!, which is about an epidemic of organ failures and the repo men who come to claim unpaid debts.

Vanessa Hudgens Invited to Join ‘Girls Gone Wild’

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Cable, The CW, WB, Gossip, Rumors,

Description

Joe Francis, head of the Girls Gone Wild franchise, has reportedly extended a business opportunity ’ way.  Francis—who is currently locked up in Nevada for just one of his many legal woes—proved that even behind bars, he likes to help poor girls out.  Should Vanessa need some financial help, she could make a nice $500,000 just by joining the GGW family.  Well Isn’t that sweet?

Before I go on, let me make a few things clear:  #1)  I think Vanessa was a complete idiot for snapping a photo that would inevitably be leaked.  #2)  I would never advise her to be associated with anyone named Joe or Francis.  But here’s a thought:  Should Hudgens want to avoid being typecast in the mold, would her ‘unfortunate’ situation give her the opportunity to break free?

HSM’s Monique Coleman Let Off Easy On ‘The View’

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Kids, Music, Talk Shows, ABC, Cable, Gossip,

Monique ColemanI seriously hope that today’s episode of was taped like 3 days ago—because there is absolutely no reason why the Vanessa Hudgens issue should not have been addressed.  Today’s guest was star .  Needless to say, I made a concerted effort to watch hoping she would (awkwardly) say something on her co-star’s behalf.  But despite two, TWO, ripe opportunities for them to segue into the controversy, not one host—not even the blunt —brought the subject up.

When first asked why HSM is such a huge hit with fans, Coleman said “I think that’s it’s a positive message that fills a void.  There are so many girls that are doing ridiculous things in this industry right now that to see someone that is wholesome and doing something that’s good….parents can stand behind it, kids can watch it.  And you’ve got cute kids that are doing good things.”  Seriously, how could someone not make a crack on at least the

wholesome

part?

Then when asked if there would be an HSM3, Monique claimed all six co-stars would all be ‘absolutely interested’ but that it was just basically a matter of seeing if they could get all of them back together to do it again.  Uhh—how about the fact that maybe Disney might not

want

some of you guys to come back again now??
