Quote of the Day: Richard Chamberlain on Actors Coming Out of the Closet

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Gossip,

Richard Chamberlain on Brothers & Sisters

"It’s complicated. There’s still a tremendous amount of homophobia in our culture. It’s regrettable, it’s stupid, it’s heartless, and it’s immoral, but there it is. For an actor to be working is a kind of miracle, because most actors aren’t, so it’s just silly for a working actor to say, 'Oh, I don’t care if anybody knows I’m gay' — especially if you’re a leading man. Personally, I wouldn’t advise a gay leading man–type actor to come out. ... Despite all the wonderful advances that have been made, it’s still dangerous for an actor to talk about that in our extremely misguided culture. Look at what happened in California with Proposition 8. Please, don’t pretend that we’re suddenly all wonderfully, blissfully accepted."

-Openly gay actor Richard Chamberlain discouraging other gay actors to come out of the closet. (Chamberlain can currently be seen playing Ron Rifkin's love interest on Brothers & Sisters.)

Family Guy’s Stewie Outed

Stewie Griffin

Creator and voice talent for , Seth MacFarlane sat down recently to do an interview with Playboy. During the discussion, he mentioned that youngest member of the household Stewie (the diabolical baby with matricidal tendencies) is homosexual.

“We had an episode that went all the way to the script phase in which Stewie does come out,” he revealed. Apparently, the episode revolved around Stewie’s problem with kids in school, resulting in a time-travel excursion to the writing of the Bible. MacFarlane says Stewie’s sexual preference explained “why he’s so hellbent on killing [Lois Griffin] and taking over the world. He has a lot of aggression, which comes from confusion and uncertainty about his orientation.”

I never knew so much thought and character development went into Family Guy, myself. The episode MacFarlane describes never made it to air, as it was decided to keep the matter ambiguous.

Not anymore!

Is Grey’s Anatomy Abandoning Its Gay Storylines?

Grey's Anatomy's Callie and Erica

It looks like Dr. Hahn won’t be seeing much more than leaves on after this week. Despite the buildup to Erica’s moment of clarity with Callie last Thursday, actress Brooke Smith has been let go from the show. This shocking news comes just as Hahn’s relationship with Dr. Torres was reaching a new level.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Smith revealed that the announcement - delivered by Shonda Rhimes herself - was made last month. Ironically, Brooke was informed of her departure right after the “leaves” episode was filmed. Unfortunately, the reasoning being the casting decision has been raising a lot of speculation. (Even Patrick Dempsey seemed clueless on today’s episode of Ellen.)

Clay Aiken to People: Yes, I’m Gay

Clay Aiken Gay People Magazine

All over America, girls are sobbing into pillows. One of the most seemingly eligible bachelors is off the market - at least as far as they’re concerned. Years of speculation, rumors and probing questions have finally come to an end.

That’s right. runner-up Clay Aiken is gay. As if we didn’t know.

The full story premieres in People’s newest issue, set to hit newsstands on Friday. “Yes, I’m gay,” reads the Aiken quote. If your jaw isn’t dropping, that’s okay - this guy has had “gay” written all over him from the word go, and the thought that anyone might really be thrown for a loop with this info is the real shocker.

Yes, Clay…we know you’re gay. We just can’t believe you’re finally ready to own it. “It was the first decision I made as a father,” said Aiken in his interview. “I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things. I wasn’t raised that way, and I’m not going to raise a child to do that.”

Will There Be A Male-Male Couple on DWTS?

Lance BassIf you thought talk about Paula Abdul trying to get on Dancing with the Stars was controversial, this piece of gossip might just top that one.

According to the New York Daily News, Lance Bass could soon become the second performer from ‘N Sync (the first being ) to demonstrate his dancing skills on the DWTS floor. The twist? The openly gay singer may supposedly be assigned to male partner.

While I have no problems with the reality show wanting to diversify (I don’t think they’ve even had an openly gay celebrity up until this point), do the producers really need to try the stunt pairing? Would this whole thing be more distracting than its worth? Shouldn’t Lance want to be judged on his own merits? And how exactly would the judges score any possible lifts anyway?

Then again - this all could just be a wild rumor. (Fingers still crossed.) You can expect the final lists of Season 7 contenders to be released sometime in August.
