PBS Cuts Sarah Palin Jokes from Tina Fey Speech

Tina Fey was awarded the Mark Twain Prize on PBS last Sunday, but viewers didn’t get to hear all of her speech. Fey made the following comments about conservatism and Sarah Palin:
"And, you know, politics aside, the success of Sarah Palin and women like her is good for all women -- except, of course, those who will end up, you know, like, paying for their own rape kit 'n' stuff. But for everybody else, it's a win-win. …Unless you're a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years -- whatever. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us. …Unless you believe in evolution. You know what? Actually, I take it back. The whole thing's a disaster."

Twilight Succeeds, Censors Fail at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards

It’s safe to say that MTV has moved from “edgy” to vulgar in the space of a single awards show presentation. The above clip is only one of the moments when the F-bomb slipped past the censors with incredible ease during the two-hour presentation of the MTV Movie Awards, a live event which made the FCC positively crazy.
From the word go, the awards show was peppered with F-bombs. This video features Peter Facinelli, better known to Twilight Saga fans as Dr. Carlisle Cullen, but he is certainly not the only celeb who decided to throw propriety (and federal communications regulations) out the window. The uncensored F-bomb was also slipped through censors by Get Him to the Greek star Jonah Hill, former Funky Bunch founder Mark Wahlberg, and more.
Twilight’s ensemble acceptance speech for Best Movie, led by the good doctor himself, is one to remember - and not just because the Saga took almost every award at the event.

Two-Part South Park Wraps on an Uneven Note

Fans of South Park noticed a striking change in the second half of the “200/201” episode, which gained some attention from a radical Muslim website earlier this week. In the first half of the episode, which aired April 14, a battle developed over ownership of Mohammed. A group of celebrities including Tom Cruise, Rob Reiner, Oraph Winfrey and every other celeb who’s ever been depicted on the show battled a group of gingers who were previously featured in a South Park episode of their own. The two groups began warring over him because they wanted his power. In the episode, the show’s two hundredth, Mohammad was shown wearing a bear costume because his image cannot be depicted.

VIDEO: Adam Lambert Brings Controversy to American Music Awards

I’m guessing this wasn’t the kind of “entertainment” ABC was hoping to see from Adam Lambert.
At tonight’s American Music Awards, the American Idol finalist raised eyebrows higher than his own hairstyle. During an S&M-laced performance of “For Your Entertainment,” Lambert leads a male dancer around the stage with a leash, simulates oral sex and then later kisses a male keyboardist—all on live TV. (Just in case you hadn’t already heard—he’s gay.)
Although it’s unclear which portions ABC was prepared for, E!‘s Marc Malkin said the kiss was not the cards. “Very good source tells me that ABC and producers did NOT know adam lambert was going to makout w/keyboardist…” Malkin tweeted.

Censoring the Emmys

The 2007 Emmy Awards aren’t about everything that was seen, but everything not seen…and heard. Kathy Griffin’s speech was censored by E! when she made some off-color jokes about the Christian religion, but even FOX got button-friendly when the live telecast aired Sunday night. For viewers, it probably looked like little more than a glitch, but it was actually censorship rearing its head. Sally Field, who accepted her award for her role on Brothers and Sisters, was interrupted mid-speech by music, then began again. For a few seconds, cameras cut away from Field and showed an odd view of lighting fixtures while no sound poured forth from TV speakers. This was not a mistake. Ray Romano and Katherine Heigl were also censored during the broadcast, which aired with a few seconds’ delay for just such events.
FOX execs say the three acts of censorship were for language and nothing more, but Sally Field’s impassioned anti-war speech might have provoked concerns about more than bad language for FOX, a network well-known for its conservative newscasts. Romano was edited for talking about an upcoming FOX show, and a camera shot of Heigl was cut when she muttered an expletive, though not near any microphones. Expletives are one thing, but opinions, jokes, and even plot-spoilers shouldn’t be censored – not by FOX, cable stations, or in fact anyone else.

Dixie Chicks’ TV Ad Won’t Air on NBC

NBC has refused to air a TV commercial for the new Dixie Chicks’ documentary, Shut Up & Sing due to the subject of the film. NBC’s policy is to prohibit ads that show “public controversy.” The film looks at the slide from the top the Dixie Chicks experienced after they criticized President George W. Bush during a London concert in March 2003. If you recall the incident, lead singer Natalie Maines told the audience that they were “ashamed” to come from the same state as Bush. Following that, some radio stations refused to play the bands’ records and boycotted ads for their “Accidents & Accusations” tour.
The documentary opened on Friday in New York and Los Angeles, and local affiliates of the big five broadcasters did run promos for the movie in those cities. The Weinstein Co., who is distributing the film, said of the rejection that they are “exploring taking legal action.” Harvey Weinstein made a statement saying, “It’s a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America.”
Following suit, the CW network also refused to air the ads, saying they had “concerns we do not have appropriate programing in which to schedule this spot.”

Cartoon Smoking Censored

Cartoon fans, take note. Your beloved characters are not safe from the Smoking Police—- not even abroad.
Due to a complaint from one viewer, a British TV channel has resorted to censoring their cartoons. The two Tom and Jerry episodes in question involved incidents of tobacco usage. Those scenes—more than 50 years old—are now on the cutting room floor. Additionally, the Boomerang Children’s channel has decided to go through their entire library to rid all their ‘toons of ‘glamorized’ smoking. Other affected cartoons could include The Flintstones, The Jetsons and Scooby-Doo.
Seriously—they might as well drop Scooby-Doo altogether. Once they edit out all the van scenes, there won’t be much of a plot left.
