‘High School Musical’ Dancing Special
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Specials, Cable,
I’m going to take a wild guess and say that most of the die-hard fans of High School Musical 2 have already seen the film a thousand times thanks to their DVR. So every line, lyric and nuance have been dissected at this point.
But for those who just can’t get enough, The Disney Channel will be airing a dance-along version of the movie next month. So if you’ve been scratching your head trying to figure out some of those choreographed 8-counts, Zac Efron (along with the other cast members) will be on hand to help provide instruction for several of the musical’s numbers.
Be sure to set your Tivo now for September 8th.

Joey Fatone Takes on the Red Carpet
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Award Shows, Games, Music, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Take that, Justin Timberlake! Well, sort of… Joey Fatone, former boy-bander from NSync, has just been tapped to host the red carpet events for TV Guide Network with former Dancing with the Stars Alum, Lisa Rinna. Fatone has made a major comeback since his appearance on Dancing with the Stars, most recently taking on hosting duties for The Singing Bee. While he hasn’t exactly been standing on the unemployment line since he left his boy band days behind—he was seen in the musical Rent, for one thing—his sudden emergence back into the mainstream is a big deal. He starts his red carpet coverage at the Emmys on September 16th and will continue his red carpet reporting through 2008. Of course, this means Rinna and Fatone take over for Joan and Melissa Rivers—and quite honestly, I don’t care who replaces the Rivers, but I’m so glad to see them gone! Fatone remarked, “I am looking forward to making the Red Carpet experience entertaining, spontaneous, and most of all fun—not only for those walking the Red Carpet, but also for the fans watching at home.”

Disney’s Musical Scores Big
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Cable, Ratings,
It would be almost impossible to count the number of TV movies the Disney Channel has premiered. From Halloweentown to Surf Girls, Disney knows how to appeal to the tween and teen set. But even this huge, money-making cable channel couldn’t predict the runaway success of High School Musical, which drew more than 6 million viewers the second time it aired. The soundtrack became a number one album, and the DVD sales went through the roof. Disney did what any cable network would have done – they ordered a sequel.
High School Musical 2 dominated Disney all weekend, airing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And this time, Disney’s original movie set a viewership record. No less than 17.24 million viewers tuned in to see the sequel of the much-loved musical flick. Seventeen million – those numbers are even better than last season’s American Idol, the number one network show. With this amount of watchers, Disney’s movie became the most-watched cable broadcast of all time. The original Musical has already been viewed by more than 200 million in 100 different countries.
On Saturday, I decided to see what all this hype was about. I went to the video store and rented their only remaining copy of High School Musical, then sat down on my couch to find out what all the fuss is about. I was prepared to keep my nose turned up. After all, it’s just another Disney movie, right?

Haim and Feldman Off and Running
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Cable, Talent, Gossip,
Sure, I had my doubts. There’s a whole lot of junk on TV these days – and some of the junkiest and trashiest of all is in the reality TV genre. I admit, I turned my nose straight up in the air when I read that A&E was going to put The Two Coreys back in the limelight. I mean, come on, The Lost Boys is soooo over. So, late one Monday night when I just happened to catch the pilot episode, I was all ready to start cracking jokes and laughing at these two washed-up former pinup boys.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered The Two Coreys are actually reality TV magic – and a helluva good pick for A&E after all. Honestly, the idea sounds awful. Haim and Feldman, two thirty-somethings who saw their stars rise and fall before the tender age of twenty, a pair of BFF who found life leading them into substance abuse and late night partying before they were even legal. Reunited by reality two decades after they found notoriety with a vampire flick, a veritable Odd Couple for the reality genre. Seriously…this is not an idea that should work. Ever.

Kim Kardashian Comes to E!
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable,
Out with the old… in with the new. In what can only be considered the lesser of two evils, socialite Kim Kardashian will be taking over the E! reality show throne now that Paris and Nicole’s show got the axe. Often seen with pal Paris, Kardashian—who makes headlines for her booty and sex tape—seems like a natural pick for the uninspired reality programming on E! I mean, have you seen Sunset Tan—ugh. On the upside though, I do on occasion watch The Girls Next Door, if only to figure out how the whole Hugh-Hefner-relationship-with-three-women works. The Kardashian show is not yet titled, but is being billed as a family-oriented program, which will be executive-produced by Ryan Seacrest. The show will take a peek at Kardashian’s life as a boutique owner—who knew—and her relationships with sisters Khloe and Kourtney and half-sisters Kendall and Kylie. Mom Kris and step-dad Bruce Jenner will also be along for the ride. According to Seacrest, “At the heart of the series—despite the cat fights and endless sarcasm—is a family that truly loves and supports one another. The familiar dynamics of this family make them one Hollywood bunch that is sure to entertain.” If you say so. This joins the upcoming reality show on E! featuring Snoop Dogg.

‘Earl’ and ‘The Office’ Reruns Coming to TBS
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Syndication, King of Queens, My Name Is Earl, The Office, Cable/Satellite,
Wow, did you catch last night’s marathon of The Office? I caught the last half of “Casino Night” and it really brought back all of those old Pam and Jim feelings. When Jim puts it out there that he loves Pam… then later kisses her. Sigh. Add to that the slightly teary-eyed Jim when she rejected him—wow, that’s a great episode. And now, The Office will live on in reruns on TBS. Ditto for My Name is Earl, another solid NBC comedy… both Earl and The Office are part of what made NBC “must see,” at least in my sad little existence. Anyway, TBS will begin airing the pair in the fall, for the low-low cost of $600,000-$700,000 per episode. No details on what timeslots these will hold—and with Friends, Sex and the City, Seinfeld, King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond and Family Guy, there will be plenty of funny on TBS (except for Raymond, which I have never found too funny).

Celebrities Riding Bulls—And That’s No Bull
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
Here we are, entering the doldrums of summer television programming… but never fear, CMT (Country Music Television) has a new brand of celebrity reality that’s sure to please. Prepare yourself for B, C, and D-listers as they (drum roll…) ride bulls. Given that there’s not much to watch now that the season has wrapped, and how I love to see lame celebrities on reality shows, I may just have to check this one out. Here’s what’s in store: the Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge features nine celebs as they are tutored in the ways of bull riding by Ty Murray. This guy’s the real deal too—okay, so I had to look him up, but he’s won an impressive seven All-Around World Championship titles for bull riding. Oh, and his girlfriend is singer Jewel. The show will begin on August 10th on CMT and include Vanilla Ice, Stephen Baldwin, Leif Garrett, American Gladiators’ Dan “Nitro” Clark, Jonny “Fairplay” Dalton (Survivor), and other less exciting celebs (if that’s possible). Word to your mother.

Paris Rehires Publicist
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Gossip, Internet, Rumors,
A day after firing her publicist, Paris Hilton decided she could use his help after all—and rehired him! If you have been following the whole Paris drama (and frankly, I don’t have the time and energy to keep up), she was sentenced on Friday to 45 days in jail after violating her probation. Seems she didn’t understand that her license was suspended (from alcohol related reckless driving) and decided to drive anyway. Busted! Then, she canned her publicist, reportedly blaming him for the whole shakedown. Um, yeah. How about taking some responsibility, Paris? A case of he said/she said, only she said that her publicist, Elliot Mintz, told her she could drive despite the suspension. On Tuesday, Mintz told The Associated Press that he’s back to representing Hilton, so I guess their tiff was short lived (she’s much easier to forgive him than Nicole Richie, it seems). Now her MySpace page has a petition for her fans to sign in an effort to get a pardon from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Her lawyers are also trying to appeal the decision. If all this falls through, can’t you just see it—The Simple Life: Behind Bars.

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan Joins Ryan’s Life
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Cable, News,
Rue McClanahan, famously forward Golden Girl (a show that’s still proudly in syndication on Lifetime) will join the cast of Ryan’s Life on the all-gay Here! network. As sexually open Blanche Devereaux, Rue became a mainstay of prime time TV from 1985 to 1992, but her legacy lives on in re-runs for ever. In her new role, Rue will be exploring unchartered acting ground in her career – she’ll be the “flamboyant” grannie of a sexually confused teenager. Rue’s costumes will include feather boas, turbans, and a whole lot of fabulous flash…no wonder her character’s grandson is confused, right?

How President Bush Can Predict the Ending of “I Love New York”
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Editorial, Features,

Oh, yeah, I’m going to make this work. Now, if you’re not familiar with the show, “I Love New York” is not a show wherein people from the South express their adoration for the city I call home while secretly hating it and using the term “Yankees” (the people, not the team) as a curse word. No, it’s VH1’s “celebreality” (as they feel the need to call it) show about the search for love by Tiffany Pollard aka New York, the two time runner-up of “Flavor of Love,” the dating show staring rapper/timepiece enthusiast Flava Flav and a whole lot of rejects from your local strip clubs, street corners, and free clinics. New York, who at times has been compared in appearance to a transvestite (in my apartment, anyway), has a gaggle of guys from which to choose, all of whom she has given helpful nicknames like “Pootie” and “12 Pack,” and each week she keeps some and lets the rest go.
At this point in the thrilling competition, our “girl” New York is down to just two dudes, “thuggish” Chance (whose band name is so dumb that I won’t repeat it here for fear of Google forever linking my name and it) and “ninja turtle lookalike” Tango (who, we learned this week, cannot do the tango well, which may mean he’s a fan of Sylvester Stallone when he costars with Kurt Russell). Whom will she choose now, only to be broken up with at the time of the reunion? We’ll all find out in two week when the show reaches it’s probably-not-that-thrilling conclusion.
