This One Time… at Idol Camp…

So, they’ve found a great way to extend the American Idol name. Nope, I’m not talking about the fundraiser “Idol Gives Back,” but rather the marketing genius of “Idol Camp.” Can you imagine being the lucky kid who gets to spend 10 days at a camp that grooms Idols in the making? Forget singing around the campfire… this camp promises to bring past American Idol performers to help with training. Campers can expect help from Vonzell Solomon, Jon Peter Lewis, Carmen Rasmusen, Kimberley Locke and Bucky Covington. “This roster of exceptional Idol talent helps to reinforce our commitment to creating a unique American Idol experience while providing children with the ultimate performing arts education,” says Donna Milani Luther, Camp Director. “All of these talented individuals have something special to offer our campers and we’re looking forward to working with them this summer.” Camp begins the first session on July 7 in Northfield, Massachusetts—$2,999 for 10 days of Idol fun.

Sanjaya a Hot Blog Topic
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Internet,
You’ve got to hand it to American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar—what he lacks in talent, he certainly makes up for in media exposure. He’s the talk of entertainment news shows and web sites, and of course, great fodder for blog discussions. Research firm Nielsen BuzzMetrics has seen significant references to the hairstyle chameleon, reporting that from February 18th to April 8th, there has been a 338% increase in blog references. With each passing week, even more chatter about Sanjaya is online—with many speculating how long he can survive in the contest and if Howard Stern is having any impact on voting. No one could have predicted that he would have made it this far, and every week he seems a step closer to getting the boot. But he’s been safe every week, despite others delivering stronger performances. Simon Cowell has even threatened to quit Idol if Sanjaya wins. Who knows, maybe that threat is what’s motivating people to vote for Sanjaya?

America’s Next Top Model: Cycle 8: The Girl Who Impresses Pedro
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Prime Time, Reality, The CW, America’s Next Top Model, Features,
After being crowned The Most Hated Co-Model, Renee sought consolation from her husband. She then tried to make amends (again!) by doing the little things like writing Jael an apology letter. Unfortunately, Dionne was doubtful that Renee could do anything to make herself believable.
Meanwhile, a hairstylist came to the house to finally take care of Brittany’s whining…I mean hair. Although Whitney managed to live with a weave since she was 12 years old, I’m not sure Brittany managed to last 12 days. Thankfully for everyone, the hair issue was - once and for all - squashed.

NBC Offers Plenty of Summer Reality Programming
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, NBC,
Sigh. The reality show possibilities have really taken off, huh? Hold on, because NBC is promising to serve up loads of reality this summer with the return of America’s Got Talent, Last Comic Standing and The Biggest Loser, plus Age of Love, a new dating show. To shake things up a bit, the three returning shows will have new hosts. You may have already heard that Jerry Springer will be filling Regis Philbin’s shoes on Talent, beginning on May 29th at 9 p.m. After a two hour debut, the show moves to Tuesday at 8 p.m. Last Comic Standing finally brings in a fresh host to replace Anthony Clark—and although I’d rather see Jay Mohr come back, instead hosting duties go to Bill Bellamy. To which I say “eh, could be worse.” Comic starts its fifth season on June 13th at 9 p.m. The Biggest Loser will now be hosted by soap opera queen Alison Sweeney (taking over for Caroline Rhea). No word yet on when the show will start. And finally, a new dating show called Age of Love debuts on June 18th at 10 p.m. with Mrs. Kelly Ripa (Mark Consuelos) hosting.

Will Summer Season Be Hot, or Just Lukewarm?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Bravo, Cable, FOX, NBC, Hell’s Kitchen, Editorial, Features, Gossip, News, Renewals,
It’s April, and that can only mean one thing: winter seasons are winding down so that new summer shows can blaze their way onto TV screens. But this year’s shows might not have enough spark to create a blaze…or even much warmth. This year’s summer shows from most major networks and cable channels center around new reality plots, as the summer season is always rife with new reality. Looking forward to summer renewals like Hell’s Kitchen, The Simple Life, and Kyle XY? Most summer favorites will be back for another run at big ratings, including Ghost Hunters (Sci-Fi Network), The Closer (TNT), and America’s Got Talent (NBC). But most networks are banking on brand-new shows to grab viewer attention, not old favorites. What’s fresh, new, and exciting about the summer season this year? If intense drama and reality melodrama appeal to you, then you’re all set for some great TV watching. Check out early previews on some of summer’s new, highly hyped, series.

Insipid, sweet, tearful – these are only some of the adjectives one might use to describe American Idol judge Paula Abdul. But Bravo hopes to add a few more words to the list by depicting Paula in a new reality show. No, she won’t be judging singing – or, thankfully, anything else. In Bravo’s new Hey Paula, Ms. Abdul will simply live her life as cameras follow her around. Remember Anna Nicole Smith’s offbeat, wacky little ways during the days of The Anna Nicole Show? Early opinion is that Paula will make Anna look like a straight-laced citizen by comparison. In one early episode, Paula will be shown visiting jewel shops in preparation for the Grammys. The jeweler will freak out while Paula allows her two doggies to treat diamonds like chew toys – and she’ll laugh and laugh, like she’s listening to fellow Idol judge Simon Cowell. Bravo will debut several more shows in their ongoing quest to find a winner, including a posh estate-flipping show, millionaire matchmaking, a high-end reality travel agency, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a luxury Palm Springs hotel. That really is Bravo’s upcoming line-up…I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Project Runway 4 Coming in Late 2007
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
If you were hoping to add Project Runway 4 to your must-see list this summer, you’re going to have to wait a bit. Bravo announced that the latest season will not air until late 2007, despite the excellent ratings from last summer’s edition. Never fear, though… Bravo will be offering up plenty of summertime reality fare, including a third season of Top Chef, Hey Paula! and the third season of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List. No firm date on when Project Runway 4 will air, but Bravo’s press release stated that “only three finalists… face-off.. at New York Fashion Week.” This is a departure from the four finalists in the previous season. But the good news is that Tim Gunn will return for the fourth season, as well as fashion designer Michael Kors, ELLE Magazine fashion director Nina Garcia and Heidi Klum.

Upcoming “The Simple Life” Promises Enemas
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, Cable, Cable/Satellite,
I only wish that headline were a typo. Ugh… the next season of Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s The Simple Life begins on May 28th and they’ll be tackling the roles of camp counselors at a wellness camp this go-around. And of course, what could be more fun than seeing these rich chicks do something totally disgusting, most likely while they’re calling it “so hot.” In an interview with Reuters, Richie said “We gave the campers enemas. We did it outside, so that was a lot of fun. It was something that I never thought I would do before.” Yeah, I’m sure most of us can say the same thing. The camp is run by Susan Powter, that nutrition/fitness chick from the 90s (so if you were wondering whatever happened to her, now’s your time to catch up). The Simple Life premieres its fifth season on E! on May 28th.

Larry Birkhead is Dannielynn’s Daddy
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Features, Gossip, News,
When Anna Nicole Smith left the party called life on February 8, 2007, she left behind a legacy of questions, court battles, and the most famous infant since the Lindbergh baby. It took many days before she could be buried, weeks longer to determine how she died, and it wasn’t until Tuesday, April 10, 2007 that the world knew who fathered Anna Nicole’s child. Howard K. Stern, longtime friend, companion, and lawyer to Anna Nicole Smith has claimed parentage from the start. His claim seemed to be supported by a Bahamas birth certificate stating Stern as the father, a certificate that was dismissed in court because signatures were not properly placed. But Stern’s claims were disputed, even before the death of Anna Nicole Smith, by her ex-boyfriend Larry Birkhead. After her death, Prince Fredric Von Anhalt also came forward claiming responsibility, while Anna’s mother Virgie Hogan Hart made custody claims and overtures. Hugh Heffner, famous Playboy founder, came forward to state he was certainly not the father of Dannielynn – no DNA testing for Heff. But, now the Bahamas court has ruled, and there can be no denying who Dannielynn’s daddy is. All parties can, however, still fight over custody.

Dancing With the Stars Host Announces Pregnancy
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Dancing With The Stars, Rumors,
Sparkling E! News correspondent and Dancing With the Stars co-host, Samantha Harris, revealed that she’s pregnant with her first child. She and husband Michael will welcome the new bundle this fall. Harris said of the news, “My husband, Michael, and I are so excited to have our first baby. This is a delightful time in our lives.” I guess she had to spill the beans because she’s been looking a bit more busty these days and people wondered if she had some plastic surgery done. She set the surgery rumors to rest, saying, “I did not get a boob job, but I have put on a little weight because I am happy to finally say I am pregnant.” She’s not quitting either of her jobs just yet, with Dancing grabbing 18.2 million viewers last week, she is sittin’ pretty. Looking forward to seeing what the wardrobe folks do with her growing waistline, though.
